Again that isn't what you said, I doubt you are honestly that dense.
It has always been known that the Superdrive would only work with Macbook Airs. That is due to the SuperDrive requiring current though a single USB port that can only be supplied by the Macbook Air.
What you said is that the Macbook Air could only use the Superdrive. Notice it is the exact opposite scenario of what you linked to
Don't even think about using normal USB drives or other Mac book superdrives as apple has modified the Air's Bios to only work with "Air Approved" version of the Superdrive.
In case I need to be exceedingly clear, here are the steps.
Step 1: Buy Macbook Air
Step 2: Buy external, non-Apple, USB Optical drive
Step 3: Plug drive into Macbook
Step 4: Use drive.

I just used a Pioneer Superdrive in an external drive case via USB 2.0 so I can confirm non-Apple Superdrive's will work.

No problems with external DVD rom drive (old) connected via ata-USB connector from old external hard drive. Used to clean install OS X and office without problems. Shows up as external CD/DVD drive

I had an older Sony DVD writer that I used to load software on my MBA. It worked great and the MBA recognized it as soon as I plugged it in.
Do you just enjoy being wrong?
