Thanks Wheel. I saw that too after a closer look.

Whatever shall I do? The current iPhones are going on ebay for $350-$500, so my husband wants to sell. We're moving to Australia in a month and a half, and there's only one company with the Edge network over there. He wants to just sell these before they flood ebay and get a 3G iPhone in Australia.

Shall we do it?
PES
Sell now. The G3 models will be on the market unlocked in the months to come. The old iphone will become very cheap.
Hutcho
3G damnit. And he is right, sell it ASAP, get a new one when you get to Australia.
Darkknight
The lines have startted to form:

iPhone 3G lines start at the Apple Cube... one week early

HelterSkelter
WTF is wrong with you Americans?!? Queuing for a week for some gadget? Are these people on holiday or simply retarded?
Hutcho
That is really stupid.
PES
Ya, you can do what Hutcho did and pre-order. cool.gif
USCTrojan
I feel like it's so difficult to find reputable sources for unlocked phones...but i would never buy a locked iPhone. Is there good sources in Germany...which might also have ones with american "keyboards"?

To those of you who have the old iPhone...can you use any instant messenger/ichat on them? I really wanna be able to IM, but I heard you can't do that with iPhones.

That's a broad brush you've got there.

FYI: Apple iPhone debuts in UK stores

Hardly the same.

"I got here 26 hours ago," he told PA. "It is a great piece of hardware. It is a great thing and I love it."

Not, I took a week off work and camped like an idiot for a phone.
HelterSkelter
Even sitting around for a whole day is kinda stupid, but at least the Brits didn't start queuing up a WEEK in advance...
DrivinWest
Don't get me wrong, I think it's stupid too. I just take offense to painting 300,000,000+ people as being "retarded" because a handful decided to camp out for a week. That was a dick comment, that's all.

Anyway, anybody who calls djgrazy what he is is probably OK by me so I'll give you a pass wink.gif
interplanetjanet
Well, we sold our first iphone we listed today for the $415 buy-it-now price. Not too shabby considering we bought it for $250. Just listed the other one. I'm curious to see how it goes, since I wasn't able to get it up earlier, and the listing closes at 22:15 California time. I hope that's not too late.

Hi,

so does anybody know what the deal is with instant messaging on Iphones?

I'm starting to think a Blackberry might be a better match for me...
Kätzchen
the deal is that tmobile will (supposedly) block IM/Voip traffic.
You can however used meebo.com for a web based IM service. Works fine, and has an iPhone interface.

When Apple open the app store I am sure there will be other IM clients available quite quickly, but whether they will be blocked by t-mobile, I have no idea. You can always use them with WLAN, or perhaps they will use HTTP connections for services like MSN.

I've been using this on my first gen and it works a treat.
Hutcho
I don't believe they are blocking IM traffic, it's just that processes for applications do not run when they are in the background. For example, you load a page on the browser but then you open something else. It will not continue to load the page in the background like a PC would do. As such, instant messaging is a bit tricky because unless you have it actively running all day, you won't receive messages on it anyway.

If you want to connect and send a message though, this is no problem. There are clients out there already that will do this.
Kätzchen
I don't think that sort of functionality will be far away :-) Email already runs in the background picking up mail etc.

I am only going by other posts with regards to VOIP/IM traffic being blocked. It does state on the Tarifs on the tmobile iphone webpage „Die Nutzung von VoIP, Instant Messaging und IPVPN ist nicht Gegenstand des Vertrages". Seems a little open to interpretation.
Hutcho
There are of course applications that already run in the background. The applications that can be developed using the API they have put out there though do not have this ability. If Apple itself wanted to develop a IM client that ran in the background, that would of course me no problem.
USCTrojan
Thanks for the info...now I know that there is a way of using IM on it. But dont get why Apple doesn't make it easier for people or puts iChat on it... dry.gif
Hutcho
Probably because the Telco's wouldn't like it.. they want you SMSing..

There's an interesting article about iPhone costs in Britain compared to the US in todays Grauniad..
Hutcho
Britain probably has the best plans in the whole world. The Netherlands gives it a run for it's money, but the UK is still the best I reckon, and are far, far better than Germany's plans.
interplanetjanet
Woohoo! Just sold the second one for $405. That's a $320 profit. smile.gif
Hutcho
$405 is an excellent price for the old iPhone.. you definitely did well there.

Belgian operator will sell iPhone simlock-free

QUOTE
Mobile telecoms group Mobistar SA. will launch the iPhone 3G in Belgium from Friday - but more importantly it will be one of the few European countries where the the iPhone will be totally simlock-free.

€525 for the black 8GB version, or €615 for the black or white 16GB version.

iTunes V.7.7 is now available and the App Store is online, albeit a little hard to find. Download a Remote App that turns your iPhone/iPod touch into a WiFi remote. Very cool.
Johnny English
€525 is an inc vat price as well.

Just looking at T-mobile and still costs €170 if you go for the cheap €29 a month package - which of course on a 2 year contract is another €700.

Plus with the total pain in the arse of actually trying to switch numbers here in Germany, Belgium is looking like a good option I reckon.

Plus the added bonus of feeling like you are bucking the system :-)

super! is there a weblink somewhere that shows the available software yet? or is it only viewable within itunes?
BattalionBoy
To have the full benefit of the 3G iPhone one needs to be online. Doesn't one need a provider for that - so might aswell buy the T-Mobile one? Can I just put in my O2 25€ a month mobile internet chip for this?
Kätzchen
The cost for the cheapest t-mobile Vertrag will run to about 750€ + iPhone @ 169/259€ for the 8/16gig version respectively. Providing your o2 Vertrag gives you UMTS access to the net then there should be no reason you couldn't get an unsimlocked iPhone from Belgium and pop your sim in it.

The trouble is, if you're going to use the iPhone like it's meant to be used, you need data. Data plans in Germany suck. There are very few on decent providers under 25 euros a month for any amount 500mb+. As such, if you want data, the plans here actually can't really be done cheaper even if you have the phone outright.

Just received a "I hate IPhone Email". Not sure if true, but some common features missing:
- Voice Dialling
- Streo music streaming over bluetooth (A2DP)
- Modem functionality
- Flash Support
Probably a iPhone owner can correct.
Hutcho
All those points are correct. Flash support is rumoured to be coming, and modem functionality has been shown to work with hacks, so it's just a matter of the software.

Frankly, I couldn't care less about any of these. Who the hell actually uses voice dialing?
Johnny English
A2DP seems a shame not to include these days.

I think worse is a 2Mp camera - shud be 5Mp these days.

Carrier unlock may happen sooner than later.

http://status.ziphone.org/

Keep checking...
Darkknight
Can we say Photoshop...

Those pix are fake..

1. They don't show any Carrier change or unlock functionality.
2. The biggest of all, the reported Capacity of the device is reported as 29GB.. The iPhone 3G only comes in 8 and 16GB.. not 29GB

Somebody just shopped some screens from an ipod touch.

@minga
Yes those features and some others are still not avail. with standard FW. They may work with hacks but you'll have to wait to find out.

If I spent all that $$$ for a phone and contract, Why should I need to use hacked software to get even the basic functionality, that
every other smartphone has had for over 2-3 years.
RS500Guy
The pics are not fake. Yes, it is an iPod touch, however, this post here shows the progress of carrier unlocking the v2.0 firmware beta from June.

The iPhone Dev Team here has jailbroken v2.0 to include Installer.app.

The reality is that jailbreaking is less interesting now that most Installer.app developers will include their apps on the Apple App Store. What will be interesting is how fast the carrier unlock happens.

Damn, the high bidder on my second iPhone auction turned out be a scammer, and ebay canceled their account. sad.gif

I sent out a second chance offer this morning, but they haven't accepted it. I fear it will be too late tomorrow to list the phone again. Aargh!

Edit: I ended my second chance offer to relist it, thinking the buyer didn't want it, and then about an hour later the guy emailed and offered me $375. I noticed that the prices have dropped somewhat, some going for as low as $340, so I accepted. I created a new buy-it-now listing, and he bought it. I didn't want to find out what would happen to the prices after the release tomorrow!

I went to T-Mobile near Orleansplatz today planning to buy 2 iPhones, but the entire stock was "reserved", apparently by people walking into the store over the last few weeks and asking for one to be reserved. Much different elsewhere where the rule of the day is 1st come, 1st served.

Consider this cross-posted in Vents. Aargh.
bluedave
Bummer, that's exactly where i was intending going to. sad.gif

Just called T-Mobile on 0800 4499100 and the nice young lady there said that she reckoned that there is not a snowball's chance in hell that you can walk into any shop in Munich now and buy one.

You can order direct from them and the delivery is quoted at 3-5 days but she was honest and said for iphones it might be 7-8 days.

Price and spec for the M package that looks attractive to me was :

150 yoyos for the phone and 49 per month on a 24 month contract for 40 sms, 100 mins and unlimited net time for the 16Gb phone and 60 euros plus same packet for the 8Gb phone.
HydroSkater
I got there early to the Kaufingerstr. one near Marienplatz... 2nd in the queue and they asked if I had reserved and said that if I hadn't I would only be able to have a white one! I already went in last week and asked if I could reserve and the manager told me that there was no need as they had plenty! C*NT! WTF??? They should have at least reserved enough for the crazy people that went there especially early and queued for ages! :-(

Tip: T-Mobile will not reduce iPhone or monthly costs for a contract extension of 2 years, but with a tarif change to Complete L, iPhone 3G 16GB, and based on my past monthly costs I was able to get them to offer EUR 80-100 "Guthaben" (credit onto account) if ordered on telephone... but I am 1) too impatient, and 2) was informed by customer service that delivery could take at least 2 weeks... Worth negotiating with them! ;-)
