I doubt we're going to see the new iPhone at the prices T-Mobile is currently offering it at although you're probably right in the fact that they will offer it at the same price as before.
Darkknight
Thats because T-Mobile are trying to clear out all their old stock to make room for the new (3G)..
So no, their prob. not going to offer the 3G ver. for the lower price.

I just bought a 16gb version state-side and can care less if it's 3G as 3G is so friggin expensive. WLAN is free, ubiquitous and the future.
Ok, thinner would be good, and 32gb is sure to be an option, my guess. I also read about the camera in the front for video calls (who cares).

My only gripe is the BlueTooth -- doesn't hook with anything.

T-Mobile is only offering 8gb version, btw.
Hutcho
T-Mobile does offer the 16GB version, but it's much more expensive (499 euros on all deals).

WLAN is definitely not the future for mobiles as the range is nowhere near adequate. I imagine when the 3G iPhone is released, there will also be an unlimited data plan to go with it (no doubt with a fair use policy like now) so under a T-Mobile contract it won't be too expensive.
Darkknight
Rumor has is that Apple will be releasing new hardware at WWDC in June, Including the 3G iPhone.
So mark your calendars all you mac freaks.. June 9-13th, San Francisco
Hutcho
In my opinion, there is simply no doubt about it, the 3G iPhone (with no doubt other upgraded features) will be announced at the aforementioned conference. If it isn't, Apple shares will take the biggest plunge in history, because basically everyone is expecting it.
Eejit
I can not find much on the small print, maybe someone already knows. If you have a tariff that includes hotspot access (M upwards) does that mean that you could also connect to a hotspot using you laptop, if for example you where in the airport? Or do you need a second hotpot account?
Darkknight
There is no way they can tell what device you are using. You will however need your mobile phone
as they send you the access code via SMS.
Beardie
I've no idea personally if they would bar it or not, but ...

They may not be able to detect the exact device but they could take a good guess from your browser settings at any login screen, unless you have a web browser that can fake its settings.

GMcD.
Darkknight
They don't.. If they did, I wouldn't be able to use my laptop to connect to T-Mobile Hotspots under with my contract info.
The login pages only want your mobile # and perhaps a Password if you already have one setup. Enter your # and they will
send you a passcode via SMS to use to login to the Web Auth. server. From there your usage is tracked via that code/phone #
and billed accordingly.

Back on topic...

Foxconn wins 3G iPhone Contract, 3 Million units shipping in June..

And if you didn't already know, they are also the ones making the current version iPhone..

Works just fine with my Plantronics headset.

T-mobile Confirms 3G iPhone

QUOTE
According to the Austrian newspaper Der Standard, T-Mobile Austria has officially confirmed the existence of a 3G iPhone and says that the country will be one of the first to receive the new phone when it eventually launches.

The article also hints that pricing schemes will change and that the company will offer "more flexible" subscriptions than they currently do.

A German language Apple blog also has a quote from CEO Hendrik Kasteel saying, "Yes, we plan to bring the iPhone with UMTS-support to market, but can't and are not allowed to say when yet."

Although the 3G iPhone has been confirmed by Apple, the company refuses to tell when it will be released, or any new features. Many believe the official launch will begin in June, a year after the release of the current generation iPhone.
Beardie
Strikes me as a piece of masterful salesmanship by Apple.

Introduce a product which they know is behind the curve (the GPRS model) knowing full well they will introduce the 3G one soon after - planned obsolescence of a sort. They get double sales from the early adopters, the Apple fans & those folk who like to have the latest and greatest phone model...

Very slick. And no doubt great for Apples bottom line.
Cookieman
Yeah, seems like they deliberately planned generations. Considering that APPLE cited integration ( trouble fitting the size of the 3G chip into the original iPhone size) and battery life as reasons for keeping 3G out of the original model, wonder if this new model will be bigger and/or worse battery life?
Darkknight
Actually according to reports the case will be slightly thinner.

QUOTE
TG Daily reports that the 3G iPhone will be in 8, 16 and 32GB flavors from $399-$599 in cost, with a 2.5mm slimmer profile, a tuned accelerometer, but a similar UI.

Cookieman
so, it was then indeed one of those planned thingies...BTW, I meant the surface area size for 'bigger'...Interesting that they are doing the 'plasticky' fix too
Darkknight
Thats it.. There all gone.. No iPhone for you..

O2 in the UK is out of stock and will not be getting more iPhones. Those looking
to get an iPhone will have to wait for the 3G release in June. - Link

Same goes for Apple stores in the US - Link

As for Germany, T-Mobile has significantly reduced the price of the iphone to 99 Eur to clearout current stock - Link
SpiderPig
I have a contact who recons he can get a 16gb one for about 225 GBP.. unlocked...

Whats 3G?? rolleyes.gif

Going back to the conversation a coupla posts above, interestingly engadget says thicker
Darkknight
That was before people started getting demo/test units...

Anyone using their Iphone over here as a GPS?
I have been reading around... but would like to know if I can plan to replace my ipod/navi/handy with the Iphone???

Report: 3G/GPS iPhone due in Q1 of 2008
thefirelane
I'll put some money against a new one in Q1 in 2008, you up for it?
Hutcho
Almost certain it will be released next month though, with a number of more credible rumours suggesting that the next version will have proper hardware GPS.
PES
And European maps will, of course, be then available?
Darkknight
The big question is what mapping software will they use..
Will they go with something standard like TomTom or MioMaps with good maps and features (Including updates)
or will they use some inhouse apple app which sux on features and has crap maps.
Hutcho
I expect at the beginning they will use Google Maps, which they currently use for the half assed GPS solution at the moment in the US.
thefirelane
yeah, I bet it will use a slimmed down google earth actually.
Darkknight
So unless your with-in range of the phone network you'll be screwed. The GPS would work, but without
maps its kinda useless ain't it.. Yup, sounds like something Apple would do..

The big question is what mapping software will they use..
Will they go with something standard like TomTom or MioMaps with good maps and features (Including updates)

If they go the GPS route they will use Navteq or Tele Atlas mapping like everyone else. Since Google use Navteq maps I'd hazard a guess that that's what they'd use.

I personally doubt they'll go GPS and 3G in one go. v2 will add 3G, v3 will add GPS IMO. Hardware manufacturers like to maximise their income.
Darkknight
Those companies only supply map data. AFAIK, they don't actually have their own navigation programs.
TomTom and the like take the map data, add their own code and map options then use the resulting
maps with their product. This is why all the mapping programs have different features, but the basic map
info. is the same or looks different.
Wheel
The navigation software is the easy bit. It's some routing algorithms and a front end. Tiny software houses can do that, so I'd expect Apple will do their own. Or they could buy in to Google Maps.

The data gathering involves a tremendous amount of effort and explains why everyone uses data from the same companies rather than doing it themselves.
Darkknight
Or doing what TomTom does, get the basic data from TeleAtlas (Now a full owned TomTom Company) and let the users submit map corrections for inclusion in the next update. This way the base maps would only have to be updated say 1-2 times per year, with updates being monthly or bi monthly. It doesn't take much effort to do updates as opposed to full mapping.
Wheel
Won't it be more likely that they'll go for on-line maps, rather than issuing maps which need to be installed? On-line maps can be updated daily and won't take up GB of storage on the device.
Fribble
How is this different from what iPhones already have (maps, pinpointing current location, step-by-step directions)? Is adding the ability to keep a running, automatic update on your location really that big a leap from what's available now, technically speaking?
Wheel
The difference is the accuracy of cell triangulation compared to GPs technology. GPS resolution is down to a few metres almost anywhere on Earth, cell triangulation can't compete.
Darkknight
And how do you expact to use these online maps, if there is no cell coverage where you are.
Not really that much of an issue to Europe where cell coverage is in the high 90's but for the US
and other countries which don't have full coverage it will deff. be in issue.

Whats the point in updating online maps daily, if you can't access them?
Wheel
Mobile phone coverage tends to follow urban areas and major routes. Where people are most likely to be, and where they most need directions. If you're in the back of beyond and need to know where you are it's best to have a map. I can't see them issuing multi-Gigabyte maps for installation. Full European mapping is about 2.5GB at the moment, and if you leave the continent you'd have to buy another multi-GB map set and install it.

I'm sure they will be on-line maps, perhaps with a basemap and caching of the immediate area so if you lose mobile coverage it will work after a fashion.

I'm moving to Berlin in June, and I'd really like to have an iphone while living in Germany. I stopped by an Apple Retail Store in Boston last weekend and was told by an Apple rep. to buy the iphone in Berlin because if I buy it here (in the States) I will have to set up an American account, which will result in having to pay steep roaming fees abroad. Can someone suggest if I really would be better off buying the phone in Berlin, or should I just buy it in the States? Also, if I do purchase/set up an iphone account in Berlin, where can I go online to read (in English) about iphone service in Germany? Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks!
Darkknight
Do what many others have done..

Buy the phone in the US (It will be a few hundred $ cheaper, then if you buy it in Germany)
Don't get it with a plan, or just don't activate it in the US. Apple stores usually (or used to)
allow you to leave the store without activating the phone with AT&T.

Activate it in Germany with T-Mobile, or just jailbreak it and use it with whatever network you want.
thefirelane
Word of advice... buy the phone on your last day in the US... the 2.0 iPhone is coming out within a month.
PES
Just in time for my July visit. How many GB can we expect?
Darkknight
16GB and maybe 32GB
PES
I sure hope we see 32GB this summer, as a replacement for my ipod. I guess we will know soon. As I said, I hope the GPS issue is also resolved soon.
PES
Not G3, but... Official: 16GB iPhone available and 32GB iPod touch -- both $499
Allershausen
And for us lucky Europeans €499. For a bloody phone! Madness.
MissH
What about the cost of the iphone plan in Germany (with T-Mobile or other network)? Is it outrageous, and if so, do you think it's worth it? Why or why not? Thanks again!
Hutcho
It's a pretty expensive phone on pretty expensive plans, but that's what you have to pay for something that simply has no rival. As soon as the 3G model comes out, I'm getting it regardless.

Today should be a great day?
