as of today the "Apple Computer, Inc." has mysteriously disappeared from that list

I wouldn't call it "mysterious". It would be a matter of conflict of interests. She could well have been a lawyer for both companies until they got involved in a law suit agianst each other, then she'd have to ditch one client, which is what has happened.

If it has 3G and GPS (got maps though, but no GPS? huh.gif ).

There is a location technology that can be used using the cell transmitters rather than GPS, I think down to 100m or less. American mobile service operators are required to implement this for emergency 911 calls by a certain date. It can just as easily be used for other applications.

Did you go to the conference and suck Job's nob as well you appleite!!

I suppose you have used an iphone, and compared it to the top of the range Samsung, Nokia, Sony phones available just now??

Ohh, the first mention on TT of the iNob.

Yes, mE2.

Everyone wants a big-screen LCD/Plasma at home but supposedly will want to squint at a mini-screen when they're sitting on a park-bench someplace? blink.gif
How sad and isolated are people going to become with stuff like this? I think that the direction of tech is going in the opposite direction of what is being advertised (like paperless office - what a joke). People will be communicating less directly to each other and not more.

What phone currently on the market is it in competition with? Certainly nothing from the manufacturers you mentioned, so i have about as much experience with the iPhone as you do with it's competition. None.
I am an Appleite, and with good reason, so I am going on my previous experiences with a lot of Apple equipment that the iPhone will do the bizzo like their computers do.

It is in competition with any phone that has a memory card slot, and an MP3 player.

I have seen the top of the range offerings from Sony, Nokia and Samsung (I have the D900) A touch screen is a gimick, and I would be very surprised if there were not serious quality control problems with it. Also, linking to I-Tunes via your mobile?? So what, you can link to music sites currently and download music. It also looks about the size of a PDA, so a bit on the large size as well. My phone has everything the IPhone has apart from touch screen. Mine is smaller, probably hardier and it has a 3.2MP camera. Apple will be playing catch up for a long long time in this market.

Bollocks. If your phone can do these things I'll have your babies.

Camera's on phones, even tho popular is nothing more than a shite gimmick with no real value. 2.0, 3.2 whatever, they're crap cameras.

The biggest absence from its features is the inability to purchase and download songs wirelessly. Apple has to renegotiate their contract with the record labels to allow them to deliver songs wirelessly. But, even without that function, you can plug in the phone just like an iPod and sync up with your iTunes.

At the very least this will drive innovation in the mobile phone market.
cinzia
The touch screen is the coolest.

So is the flippy album cover graphic feature in the iPod part.

Moving back to the US next month and need a new phone anyway. To iPhone, or not to iPhone? I'll probably get a cheapie mobile at first and wait for the bugs to be worked out and the price to come down on the iPhone.

So not only are these things going to be very expensive, but you will also be locked into only being able to use whatever ringtones, games and programs
your carrier or apple approve of... Sorry, but as cool as this thing looks I'm not gonna even think of getting one...

And as for when it get to Germany, I've seen reports that say Dec 07, and the Price in EU land will be the same as US but in Eur. Who the hell is
going to pay 600 Eur, for this crippled thing. They gotta be nuts..

My current phone does all that and more and I have no problems with using it... plus it's 1.5 years old and has been superseded by a model that has built-in GPS and 3G. And the newer unreleased model will support the new SD card format which currently maxes at 32 Gigs. It's just an expensive gadget with over 1 year old technology - or 2 years by the time it's released.

It's not as innovative as they claim.
Design-wise does this look familiar?
So it has multi-touch, hmmm
ian
It doesn't do anything that hasn't been done before! Just a big fanfare again!

I got fed up with my touch screen phone. It was much slower to use than positive buttons. They will have to do something clever to get typing speeds up.

They are not all crap cameras on phones. Sony Ericsson K750i takes great pictures! I did not buy it for that, but then I discovered how good it is! (The video is shit though) And that is also a camera that has been on the market for at least 1.5 years.

480x640 res screen would have been a better choice for Apple. 320x480 on a 3.5" screen is gonna look pants compared to the latest PDAs and handys (and that link to the linux phone which is 2.8" 480x640).

They're shit, they don't even come close to an entry-level point and shoot digital. I have a 3.2mp Sony at work and the quality isn't even remotely close to my 4 year old point and shoot snappy cam digital

Use your noggin mate, do you think manufacturers put good quality cameras in their phones and then sell them for a couple of hundred bucks??
If they were good, then there wouldn't be much of a market for digital cameras and all photographers would need to go to a shoot would be the handy in their pocket. dry.gif

You've seen them in the shop then or you have actually tested them?
Please tell me that you are not serious about the touch screen. There are no 4 point touch screens on the market as far as I know. Many require a stick and this is the first...ok maybe one of the very few where you can use the pad of your finger to open and drag applications...some work with the fingertip but that is awkward. Surely the client of iTunes will be available and not just the site???! Also proximity sensor, sesonr to check to position of the phone (landscape, portrait) and enviornment sensors to automatically choose the right profile.

iPod is not the revolution perhaps but it certainly wont be playing catch up!! Oh and one more thing. A study from Nokia on phones recently conculded that Touch Screens in phones will be a must in the future! Hmm to bad for them that the future came sooner then they thought

Ermm, 480x320 will be perfectly fine for TV/movies (unless you want HD content...) I was thinking more of for the web browser and whatever else is on there, 3.5" is a big screen for a phone, and it's gonna look a bit pixelly with text compared to other phones that have been out for ages.

480x320 is fine by the ratio, but on a 3,5''... I don't know. On text, is the iPhone supposed to be a smart phone? Can you view and work on documents?

Well originally Nokia were ahead of the game with the 7700 way back in 2003, so much so that they didn't launch it because they didn't think it would sell. Nokia already have several more phones in the pipeline with touch panels, and I wouldn't be surprsied if they look similar to the iPhone. Nokia only tend to announce phones a couple of months before they go on sale, so watch this space!

Good point. I thought they were going to pull a surprise shortly befor Xmas. Expecially with microsoft getting their OS on phones now. Anyway I am sure Nokia will have an answer...ASAIK they have still...via their phone sales..sold more MP3 players then Apple have sold iPods...at least I think thats right

Not unless their is an application pre-installed to view these documents. Apple won't allow 3rd-party apps to be installed, just widgets. This will limit the phone quite a bit and make it a no-no for the corporate user. Which is odd as it's priced more in the corporate price range than the normal consumer range. They might have priced too many people out of this purchase.

It runs OSX so within memory limitations anything that runs on a Mac could theoretically run on the iPhone. Although its probably not that simple.

No.. It's really easy... You can't load your own or 3rd party programs... (Your tied into Apple and the carrier)

And it's not the FUll Intel OSX, its an Embedded ARM ver. of OSX.. So don't go thinking your Desktop OSX apps will/can run on it...

Apart from 3G most of things come into "they could if they wanted to" category with no more than a SW update or contract change. I would really be interested to know how big the market is for 3rd party apps. for smart phones apart from games.

Umm.. Some of the "Upgrade" would require new Radio chips, which last time I checked can't be down via a FW update...

From the article Dostoyevsky posted before some of the mayor handicaps of the iPhone:

The Ultimate iPhone Frequently Asked Questions

ANSWERS TO ALL YOUR QUESTIONS:

Is it an “unlocked phone, so I can use it with a carrier other than Cingular? –No.

Can I put my T-Mobile SIM card in it instead of Cingular? –No.

Can it run Mac OS X programs? –No.

Can I add new programs to it? –No. Apple wants to control the look and feel and behavior of every aspect of the phone.

Does it have GPS? –No.

Voice recognition? Voice dialing? Voice memos? –No, although this could change by June when the phone ships.

Does it get onto the HSDPA (3G) high-speed Internet network that Cingular has rolled out in a few cities? –No. But Steve Jobs said a later version of the iPhone will — once there’s enough HSDPA coverage in this country to justify it.

Does the Web browser support Flash or Java? –No.

Can you change the battery yourself? –No. You’ll have to send the phone in to Apple for battery replacement, just as with the iPods.

Can it open Word and Excel documents? –No. (Steve Jobs says it can open PDF files, though.)

Can you use it one-handed? –Yes, for some functions. But overall, it’s less convenient than on a phone with physical keys.

In the end it seems to be just a fancy toy, blinding its customers by it's pretty dress and the hype that's being created around it.
Wheel

This MacRumors analysis puts some of the iPhone/Cingular pieces together and suggests that Apple may be turning the the cell phone market upside down. Everyone assumed that Apple's $499/$599 prices for the iPhone was subsidized by Cingular. But, it appears that Apple is not allowing mobile carriers to subsidize the iPhone. Why? Because when Apple comes out with the Touch iPod, they don't want it compared in price to a discounted/subsidized iPhone

This means if you want the phone you must pay the full 500-600 USD/EUR Price...
