Hi, I was walking back from the Ubahn and saw a dog with a leash but the owner was missing. there was no one in sight so I took it home cos i could not leave it out in the cold. does anyone know what to do??? Besides posting signs at the ubahn and the nearby supermarkets, is there any place i can send this dog to???
Thanks
Tom17
I was out cycling one day this year and came across an over-friendly young dawg. He was trailing me and another couple. The other couple were kind enough to take him on rather than me as they had an inkling of what to do and they took him to a police station.

I do not know if this was the right thing to do but if you can find a 24hr police number I would guess that they may know what to do?

Sorry if this is of no help.
Schotte
I'd agree with Tom17, police station seems a safe bet.

Found my dog there once...

OnPAR, the dog should have a tag. Call the Hundesteuerabteilung at the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR), and give them the tax number. They should be able to contact the owners.
Unless, of course, the owner can't be bothered with the mutt any more and has removed the tag. Then your best bet is the Tierheim in Riem.

Easy to lose those little tags. Check the inside of the right ear for a tattoed number aswell. The dog might also be chipped, which any local vet can check for.

I do not know when the law came in but I think the dog has to be chipped. Mine is as are all my friends, pedigrees and "mutts" alike. biggrin.gif

I don't think dogs have to be chipped, unless the law was passed recently. We spoke about chipping with the vet, because we were thinking about going abroad, but it wasn't done. He didn't mention any law at the time. Was almost a year ago though.

I checked for a tag or a thingy in the ear! Gar Nichts!!! I guess the police station it is then!!! Thanks for everyone´s help! I hope we can find the owner.

We had to chip our dogs to bring them here.
sarabyrd
What with the sub-title and you all talking about dogs and chips people might get the wrong idea ... anyway, I think that under the circs the Tierheim in Riem is your best bet, the police will probably say so as well. Unless you want to keep the dog yourself.
Timmeh
I'll have it
kitkat64
What's the matter, Timmeh, have you already resigned yourself to the fact that Bella is leaving you?
OnPAR
I brought the dog to the police and they took down all the dog´s and my details. Said i would have to bring it to a Tierarzt to get the microchip and if the owner doesn´t contact them or me within the next few days, they will take it off me...they called it a WEPE!!! Thanks again guys...really appreciate the advice.

what kind of dog is it?

was the dog wandering around with the leash dragging behind or was it tied to something?

Shhh! It's not pretty to see a grown man cry! tongue.gif The best thing to do is try to distract Timmeh with colouring books and shiny objects at the moment so he doesn't think about it too much.
Anyway, no other pup will be quite like Bella. wub.gif

It was looking completely lost standing near the road with its leash dragging behind him. I have no idea what kind of dog it is, but is doggone cute with one ear sticking up and the other flopping down. I think the owner was a girl though cos this dog smells of a lovely perfume.
sky_hoc
Poor doggy..

Whats a WEPE?
Marshbot
I wonder if the dogs owner is frantically searching for him. Have you been back to the Ubahn station to see if someone has put any posters up looking for him by now?
mere
that is what i was wondering and that's why i asked how the dog was with leash tied to something or what. Because i've left my dog for 5-10min tied to things before when i've had tt quickly do things.
OnPAR
i put up a notice at the u bahn station this morning already.

Perhaps they called it a 'Welpe' (puppy)?

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the law is in Germany with regard to having to keep dogs on the lead when you're out in the street. I think in the UK and US you have to keep them on the lead when you're in the street.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a dog just run out into the middle of the road and sit down (thankfully it was quiet, and all the cars managed to stop), while it's owner just stood at the side of the road calling it until it decided to come back. Since then I've noticed that most of the people I've seen out with dogs don't seem to to have them on a lead.
mrs.simpson
I believe it's different from Bundesland to Bundesland, but in most cities dogs have to be kept on the lead except for certain places in public parks. As with speed limits this is a law that's often disregarded. If you listen to traffic news on the radio regularly at least once a week you'll hear a warning that some dog is running around on the autobahn

A picture of the dog i found!

Showem
Oh, that's a cutie. I bet the owners really miss it.
OnPAR
I think so, but I guess I will take the train to the Tierheim today and give it to them. I think it´s much easier for them to handle it since I am going away and I can´t leave it at home if I have to leave the apartment and do something.
