I read in the Abendzeitung today that the ski hill at Fröttmaning is going to open this weekend (February 16, 2008). They claim to have 70cm of snow on the slope (something I find hard to believe, but that's what it says) which is 70 meters high, and 400m long. 1 hour costs 5 euros and will be open from 09:00 until 21:00 every day starting this weekend. They have two lifts running, and there is a ski kiosk at the bottom of the slope. The slope will be limited to 100 people at a time.

I must say, I feel sorry for these guys, they've been trying to get this going for two years now, and it probably sounded like a great idea after the incredible winter of 2005/2006. But they've really had bad luck with the weather in the last two years. At least they've finally got this going. That said, the ski slope would be much better in Olympia Park, where it would be much more easily accessible.

its been cold enough for canons...
Hutcho
Warm enough for a thaw in the day too. I imagine it would be pretty icey.
gideon
True, not ideal for the little ones first time on skis, but better than grass.

Would anyone know the best place to park? How close can one get to the lifts? Unless you have an Allianz Card I dont think you can park in the "underground" car parks directly opposite the hill.
Hutcho
You can park at the Allianz Arena, but you'd have to pay. it's a good question though, cause it's still a fair way to walk from the car park there.

Just got back from the "Berg" and parked on the Allianz side. A bit of a walk but not too bad. There is however a parking lot quite a bit closer on the opposite side of the Autobahn but I have no idea how you get there.

Regardless had a blast. Obviously its not going to challenge the profis but for a bit of exercise and some fresh air its got to be better than sitting in a 25km tail back!

Cost €10 for 2 hours for adults and €8 for kids. There is a very small snack bar and not many places to sit, so bring something to keep your bum dry.

And the "resort" website is here: Skiarena München

It looks like a fun evening out!

The website says that you can't currently hire skis on site - any recommendations on where the best place to hire some in Munich is? The website seems to infer you should just ask a sports shop to let you test some - which seems a little wrong if you have no intention of buying (though I could just have misunderstood the German).

And to answer my own question: Ski hire in munich thread

That search feature isn't half useful!

Good luck to them in the near future. Gonna be 16 degree's on Saturday and 18 on Sunday and above 0 even at night.
