We are thinking of visiting Hamburg for a weekend early Jan and saw the Gaswerks Hotel (I think its called that!) does anyone know it? Looks a funky place but is it really for business do you reckon or ok for tourists? Also is it central for other stuff and ...what do we have to see when we're there?
Thanks.
P.S. My brother told me about this site he lives near Munich, (well an hour away really but chats on here all the time!), looks really useful.

Gastwerk Hotel. Don't know it, but the website looks nice. Its in the Bahrenfeld part of Altona. Its a nice area, but 15/20 mins S-Bahn ride from the city centre and the sights like the Rathaus and Alster Lake, although the Reeperbahn area is about 10 mins by S-Bahn, if you want to see that sort of thing.

It's quite near where I live, don't know anyone who's stayed there but it looks very nice. It's right next to an Elixia sports club, which you usually get a free pass to along with your room. The same company seem to run the
25hours hotel, which is right next door, and a fair bit cheaper. I've been in there, it is very nice, very simple, modern rooms & good quality (both hotels are only a couple of years old).
As Mat says, it's about 10mins on the S1 to Reeperbahn, 15 to Jungfernstieg. 10min walk to Bahrenfeld station from the hotels.

Stayed there for 2 weeks on business last May. It's very very good.
Design is super cool, the room was spacious and the bed comfortable. Great shower as well. The bar and bar food was fine - the Gastwerk burger is tremendous, so large even I couldn't finish it! The restaurant there is pretty damn smart too.
Only two downsides are that the gym is next door - you need to walk outside to get to it and it's a good cab trip from the centre.
I would say that it is good for business, and probably fine for pleasure, except for the trip to the centre.
Highly recommended.
Even better though is 'Side' hotel - my favourite in Hamburg (especially the food at their restaurant, Fusion). This is dead central (5mins walk to Gänsemarkt -sp?), very cool and the same price range as Gastwerk. Rooms are large and comfortable and it has a cool bar/lounge on the top floor.
Also to be commended are 'East' which has an übercool bar and is one street behind the Reeperbahn and the Park Hyatt which is just mega comfortable (I met the Red Hot Chilli Peppers there in May - I was staying there and so were they). The Atlantic is tired and trades on past glories, although the restaurant is still very good.
Also stayed in the Four Seasons (comfortable, with good view), Steigenburger (boring), Marriot (dire) and Radisson at the second station which name escapes me (Damtor?) - anyway, it's average.

Thank you for your advice all of you!!
Now not sure what to do...I think the Side hotel looks really funky and is obviously very central but other half still wants to go to the Gaswerks...Looks like gaswerks might be a bit boring outside of the hotel itself as its really a commercial and residential area I think, whereas Side should have more to do, e.g bars, cafes etc on the doorstep. Is that right do you think?
AND what else should we see? I like galleries, museums, beautiful gardens, churches etc...
Thanks
Beautiful gardens are brown-gray at this time of year...
I recommend
Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg:
we were there 2 years ago & its expanded a lot since then.
Don't think thats its a model railway & just of interest to men. My daughter (then 12)
was fascinated. Its more than trains running round in circles...

Planten on Blomen is in Central Hamburg, the glasshouses are worth a visit this time of year.

Side hotel is really nice and very modern! That and East Hotel are 2 of my favourites in Hamburg and is where family and friends stay when they are in town! You definitely won't be disappointed!

Sorry took sooo long to get back, had a wonderful time! Hotel was really FAB so thank you whoever it was who recommended it, we would never have known about it and we really loved it! Really liked Hamburg, cocktails in most bars was a pleasant suprise and everyone spoke such good English everywhere we went, puts us in the UK to shame with our rubbish second language abilities!
Anyway, just wanted to update you and say thanks!
