Coal-heated apartments and sulphur smells

hey folks,
this is my 2nd winter here in Berlin,
(and my third flat with Kohleofen heating...)
thing is, while the lingering smell of coal has always been detectable in the past
in this flat, i just fired up the ofen the first time and WOW it smells real bad and sulphur-like!
any thoughts, suggestions, or ideas?

Bad Coal???

I would be worried about the toxic gases that are seeping into the apartment. The system should be enclosed with no smell whatsoever. Buy yourself a CO monitor pronto and have the system checked out.
