So FTA card is required but no subscription needed
It's important to get the nomenclature, as there are many misconceptions and misunderstandings. "FTA" (Free-to-air) is commonly applied to satellite channels that require no subscription, card nor special equipment except for any (digital) satellite receiver and suitable dish. As far as UK channels are concerned this includes ALL BBC TV and Radio, all ITV channels and a number of news and general interest channels. It also includes Film 4 and Film 4+1 which recently went from subscription to FTA. "FTV" (Free-to-View) is used to describe encrypted channels which need special hardware (for UK channels this can only be a Sky Digibox with built-in Videoguard decryption) and card, for which there is a one-time payment and no monthly subscription. UK FTV channels basically add Channel 4 and the "Five" channels (Five, Five US an Five Life) to the FTA line up. "Freeview" is a terrestrial reception service in the UK, does not apply to satellite services and cannot be received outside of the UK mainland
