Romantic restaurants in Hamburg

Some recommendations

Pages: 1 2
Deccie
As a Christmas present I am treating the better half to a night in Hamburg on 23/Dec, before heading to the dreaded (partners) parents for Christmas.

I have already got tickets for Dirty Dancing which is on in Theater Neue Flora (near St.Pauli I think). It is my first time in Hamburg hence I am looking for recommendations for a nice (romantic) restaurant near the theatre, where we can just up and go to the theatre after eating. What type of food does not matter, but it must be good quality food and service. Price is not a matter (within reason).

Thanks in advance.

No, Neue Flora is in a different part of town, Altona I think, near Holsten Brewery on Stresemannstraße. I have to admit I don't know this part of town very well but the website seems to show a restaurant called Cordoza's which looks nice. I think its actually part of the theatre or next door. Telefon 040 / 431 651 34.

Plus you're right near Holstenstrasse S-Bahn station if you want to go anywhere else.

I guess I need to take Hammonia to this if there are tickets left.

Thanks mate. I will it out and try to see their menu. It looks hig quality interior. I wonder if their food is as good.

The Neue Flora is right across the road from Holstenstrasse s-bahn station, very easy to find. I'm afraid I can't help with the restaurant question either though... (but as it's so close to the s-bahn and only 1 stop from either Altona or Sternschanze you might be able to widen your search)

That's an idea!

Sorry, don't know about the restaurant either, and also don't know the area there very well.

If you widen your search, there's plenty of places in Osterstraße and Eppendorfer Weg, especially Eppendorfer Weg (it's not far) there's a nice and cosy Greek Restaurant.
Stop, don't think of the usual Greek restaurants now, with all the Greek statues etc.
The interior is Mediterranean, and the food is phantastic, they have the Greek version of Tapas resp. Mazza. You order many tiny little plates of food, so you get to taste lots of different things.
Service is also excellent.

Reservation is necessary, they are usually booked up.

Thank you Hammonia,

Sounds nice, might give it a try.
Didsbury's Daftest
If I were spending just one night in Hamburg I'd be off to the harbour area for a romantic dinner. Of course there are loads of places all over Hamburg, I could recommend dozens in Eppendorf alone where I used to live. Going there would however be nearly the same as going to one of your favourites at home. Here is a small list of places I think you ought to have a look at before deciding where to book your table. They are all close to the theatre as it's just a small drive by taxi to these places and all of them are close to the river Elbe for a moonlight stroll afterwards...

Au Quai ( www.au-quai.com)
La Vela ( www.la-vela.de )
Das weisse Haus ( www.das-weisse-haus.de )
Henßler & Hensler ( www.h2dine.de )
Indochine ( www.indochine.de )

ach, Hamburg, Du Perle.

You'll be lucky to get in at Das Weisse Haus. December is already fully booked, although you can get in for lunch during the week.

Indochine is very good. Not romantic in a classical way, but a pretty sweet place none the less.

There is (was) also a place called Dreitageszeiten (or something like that - it was before my German speaking days) that I used to go to with my ex for romantic dinners.

There is also a tiny little place on Maria-Louisen-Str (Winterhude), corner of Leinpfad which was a bit old school with lovely food, attentive service and could be considered romantic.

La Vela is excellent - definitely recommend it!

Looks good, might give that a try ourselves.

@DD: you're right, harbour is a very good idea.
Hey, if you miss Hamburg so much, why not join bluedave and come to our meeting next week
gnhahaaa.
ot: been to Manchester again a couple of weeks ago, but first time that we came through Didsbury. Now THAT'S a nice area! Could easily imagine that in case we should move to Manchester one fine day we might end up there. Provided we have the right amount of pocket money available
Didsbury's Daftest
I should be in Hamburg from time to time (not as often as I'd like though) and will definately join you lot on one of the occasions. Would have avoided your last location though. I'm glad you all survived! Let's just say "Laufauf" certainly lived up to it's own name the one and only time I went there. Glad you liked Didsbury, too. It wasn't the worst place then and is even better now. Just a pity "me mum" sold our house back in 1979 for zilch, nada...you need to rob a bank these days to buy something decent in that area.

Deccie, if you are looking for somewhere close to the theater then I would highly recommend Saliba. Not sure what you call walking distance but its about 1 km from the theater. It's a Syrian restaurant with amazing food and service, a little expensive but worth it. Set menus cost €48 and include starters, 1 or 2 main courses (depending on menu) and desert. If you are there at the right time a dancer will come out and dance around the tables - typical arab dance and impressive to watch! Excellent location for a romantic dinner IMO. It always get really good reviews, you can do a search for them. Leave plenty of time between the restaurant and the show if you decide to go for it.

This is their website: http://www.saliba.de/home.html
The restuarant beside the theater is the one on the left and also their main restaurant.

Here is a map showing the route from the theater to the restaurant to give you an idea of the distance.

Maybe we win the lottery
Oh, and about Laufauf: never had any problems, food isn't phantastic, but good. Plain cooking.

Abt. Saliba: very nice place, try the Mazza! It's really a bit pricey, if you have some wine etc. you easily pay € 70/80 p.P. - but it's worth it.

edit: there's a branch of Saliba in Eimsbüttel, near Osterstraße, in Heußweg, it's a smaller version, but the food is as good, but cheaper. It's called Grill of Arabia. Not very romantic though.
And Saliba also have a branch in Hamburg downtown, at Alsterarkaden, with a very nice view, the place is tiny but very nice. And it's close to station Jungfernstieg, abt. 3 min. walk to S-Bahn (which goes directly to Holstenstraße opposite the theatre).
lazybum
I wouldn't recomend Saliba. I took 15 people there to celebrate my 40th birthday and the food, what there was of it, was shit.
