Coin sorting and counting machines

Where to exchange small change in Berlin
diabla
I read a thread about change counting/sorting machines in Munich but am wondering if anyone has seen such a thing up here in Berlin. I've got loads of small change, but no wheels, so not really keen to lug them all over town looking for somewhere to cash them in.

I bank at the Postbank and I recall reading on the Munich thread that they won't accept large amounts of coins unless they are rolled--again, not keen!

Give your coins to charity my friend,I find thats the best way to get rid of change, brown money 1,2 and 5 cents. The rest I just use in shops when they ask for the right money etc.

not sure about postbank but my bank Commerzbank has a little device that sorts the coins. I have never used it myself as i use my coins and always try to pay exactly to eliminate creating holes in my pockets from excess weight.

Otherwise Jim is correct give it to charity.

What branch of Commerzbank is that?

I give to charity regularly but I'd still much rather convert the coins as I don't fancy carrying kilos of loose change around looking for donation jars... sad.gif

it was in Potsdammer Str.

I generally give my shrapnel to street musicians. Harder to find in the winter though.

I know most Sparkasse Banks have loose change counting machines available. I often go to a Sparkasse with a large bag of one, two and five cent coins to get counted even though I'm a Deutsche Bank customer. Drop by your local Sparkasse in Berlin and see if they have one.

The Sparkasse is the only bank I know in Berlin which offers this service and I opened a savings account especiall for this purpose.

I am now closing this account and never using the service again as having paid in twice I have been short changed by 70 EUR. I count the coins before I pay it in and last time it was 10EUR and I complained and they said that the amount they credited to my account was correct. This time is was 60EUR and they again claim to be right. I think I'd rather roll the coins than be cheated out of my cash...

hmm, perhaps that's why someone broke every window of the Sparkasse at the corner of Stargarder and Prenzlauer Allee. It looks so ghetto now ph34r.gif

All banks have the needed equipment.
If you have an account, then deposit it. They may try to give you a hard time, but just say that money is money and they need to get over it.
Basically, don't take no for an answer. They actually have to take it no matter what. Even if you prepack it, they have to count it themselves so it saves you both, well you, a lot of time.

I have about 100 euros of coins and don't know what to do with them. I read on TT that Sparkasse has machines you can deposit coins to, but I've never seen a machine like that in any of the branches I've been in.

Can anyone give me a specific location of a coin machine in Berlin, ideally in the Mitte area?

Many thanks!

They used to have a machine in the Alexanderplatz Sparkasse branch during the 90s, but it kept breaking down and at some point they got rid of it. I've never seen any anywhere else.

Usual practise with coins is to obtain some special paper for wrapping them into rolls (Münzrollenpapier), wrap them up and present them to a bank where you have an account (or maybe some banks might just exchange them for notes - I'm not sure). Any bank should give you the roll paper for free.

Ask your bank, most large banks have the change machines somewhere.

A somewhat late reply but hey...

I personally haven't seen the machines here but I used to deposit my cash in a plastic bag provided by the Sparkasse.
