Glasgow Celtic and German Football

Didn't they do well! They didn't lose in my eyes!

I couldn't find the game on the TV, so headed down to a pub all by myself to watch the match. There I found one sad German and we watched it together. Why is nobody interested in the UEFA cup final? Is it because there were no German teams in the final (Celtic put Stuttgart out in February)? The Germans claim to love football, therefore, I don't understand why such an important game failed to spark interest.
Anyway, I enjoyed it and made a new friend, I'm meeting Franz next week for the Jueventos v AC Milan game, better tell Opa before he reads it here
Was there much interest in the city centre :?:

Germans Love Football?!?!?

I have never seen much proof. Nobody in this country seemed to give a monkeys about the world cup last year, until Germany were in the final, and even then it was nothing like the atmosphere you get in England. The Turks all got very noisy (just for a bloody change), but it seemed to me certainly that no german gave a damn. Here where I work, nobody even talked about the footy! They just did not seem that interested.

Any the TV coverage! Absolutely AWFUL. The evening highlights were so badly presented it was unreal.

Having said that, I do enjoy seeing Germans going to Bayern or 1860 games in their 'football denims' - those denim jackets covered in badges with the arms cut off, and frayed bits of cotton dyed the team colours. Brilliant. Should always be worn with a nioce 'Scorpions' t-shirt and a proud mullet-tash combo (both with highlights).

hmm... the response to the WC was complete opposite here in my office. Everyone (Germans and ex-pats alike) downed tools whenever there was a game, and the techies even streamed it live on our intranet. For the big games, all the meeting rooms were used so we could see it on the big screens.

Yeah the response in my office to the WC was excellent. The bosses bought tv's into each office so we could watch the games at work. Had to stay at our desks and work mind but still, we got to watch every game.

There are quite a few guys here who like footie, but granted they are not german (not english too though, portugese, turkish, moroccan...)

now if only I can get them interested in rugby...

Maybe its just where I work then. To be honest, there is a disproportionate amount of absolute jerks where I work, so maybe that explains it all. But even the feeling around the city was not that great.

I just get the impression that in Germany, or at least here, football is sniffed at a bit as a 'commoners sport', in the same way that loads of Germans seem to like classical music, even though most of it is complete crap, just to seem 'cultured'.

Maybe we should get them into cricket - it was so hard for me to watch the WC this year even though it seemed to go on for 6 months.
I was flying back and forth to London a lot during the time, and it was like entering the twilight zone - one day I would be getting a tikka roll next to a hundred people watching pakistan on the cafe's TV and then the next day a butterbrezen and... well nothing really. I reckon this is one of the few times I really missed the UK.

Now that I think about it... I agree... they dont really get so passionate about any sport here, at least not in the "yorgonnagetyerfokkinhedkickedin" sense that it gets really emotional.
Keydeck
Don, we watched the WC final in a little local pub and try the atmosphere wasn't the Mae West. One thing which always gets me is the Germans lack of any sort of recognition when their national anthem is being played. They just continue to chat on. I've been told it comes from years of being told that national pride is a bad thing.

Anyway, after the game we headed up Leopold and the atmosphere was fantastic. Germans and Brazilians all out in the streets partying.

Here's the piccies...

Good piccies Keydeck.
Seems that the supporters were mostly female? Or is that just your camera style?
The last three that you claim you did not take might be of interest in another recent thread about nude sunbathing in the English Garden.

Its always good around Schwabing when Brazil are playing, they like a good time, and they have the distinct advantage that most brazilians can dance!!
Keydeck
I definitely didn't take the last three. I know this 'cause the guy lying at the back of the group in a red shirt is me trying to have a nap and sober up a bit.

It's a very weird little camera. The lens seems to automatically point towards women. There's really nothing I can do about it. A similar kinda thing happened after the Turkey V S.Korea game.

And yes, I agree with the Brazilian thing. I'm sure the atmosphere would have been completely different in town if it had been a German-Korean final or some-such.

And as for the dancing...

Nuff said.

Keydeck, some of your photos are ruining the lines of my suit trousers. Please don't desist smile.gif

Funny you should say that... I was sitting outside sausy-litos on Tal during the WC, and all of a sudden a bunch of Korean supporters started marching down the street banging those big oriental drums and waving really big flags.

However the "crowd" was only about 20 strong, and it was over in an augenblick - of course I was the only one to notice it on our table, and I still wonder to this day what was in that margherita...
Granny
So, now that you're all a bit more interested in football, how about lending your support to Scotland on 7th June. The game will be held at Hamden Park, and "Bertie" seems to believe we have a good chance against the Germans :!: What do you think :?:
Showem
Hey Granny,

I got this link and you may find it amusing:
