Can anyone please suggest books - and sources thereof - in German suitable for, say, an intermediate level learner? I've heard that there are books available which have the English translation available on each opposite page, if you know what I mean. This sounds like a good idea to me as the thing that has put me off so far is constantly having to refer to my dictionary for translations which are sometimes innapropriate for the context.
I've seen some at the library, (Münchner Stadtbibliothek) at Gasteig, Rosenheimerplatz
I dont know where in Germany you're located, but the bookstore chain Hugendubel does offer reading books with English on one side and German on the other. Good luck.

I have seen quite a few of those dual-language books at my local library (Munich-Arabellapark) in the English books section.
I quite enjoyed our prescribed book by Hans-Ulrich Treichel - Der Verlorene. Very easy to read.
