Oh, right right - how about that place by Nordbad? If it is weak we could always go to Eat The Rich or Enchilladas or something.

What's the place called near Nordbad?

Mar 9 2004, 10:03 am
Café am Nordbad - CAN...as DW says, if it's weak we can go to other places in the same local
...quite a few places around there.
12, 27 Tram, 33 bus, or U2 and a 5 min walk
19.00 (7pm) onwards.
See you there!

Ok, good a decision! I´m guessing that I get on the U2 and get off at Hohenzollernplatz? Phew, this is effort for a Tuesday night. I´m always getting lost.

Wow, lots of Schwabing natives here. Maybe we need our own gang sign? I propose the following (Munich

Yep, then either walk for a few minutes or take the 27 tram to Nordbad (1 stop north, direction "Petuelring"). CAN is right next to the tram stop on the left hand side - you can't miss it.

Ooops. Just remembered that stop for the northbound tram isn't in the same place as the southbound.
Shouldn't cause too much confusion though - you'll see CAN on the left just before the tram turns right into Schleißheimerstraße where it stops.
Might join you there later. Not sure what my plans are though, so don't reserve a seat. If I turn up I'm sure I'll be able to squeeze myself in.

That was kind, choosing a place 200m from where I live.
Its a 5 min walk from Hohenzollernplatz, on the corner of Schleissheimerstr and Hohenzollernstr.
The 33 bus from
Münchner Freiheit, 12 tram Scheidlplatz to Rotkreuzplatz, and 27 Peteulring to
Karlsplatz all stop at above intersection

CAN does show football though but only on 1 large screen and not with the sound on high, I watched a Bayern game in there once. Nice food in there too esp. the salads. I also used to live around the corner (in Krumbacherstr.).
Have a nice evening, I'll be at a birthday thing in

I object ! I also live only about 5 minutes from CAN. This part of Schwabing is actually perfect, away from the noise and the loud drunken louts, and close enough to join the drunk louts every now and then !
Oh, and not all of this is the cheap part of

Interesting evening.
Waiter and owner were a bit freaked out by the mob that descended on the place. I told him earlier on "there'll be a minimum of about 12 of us and possibly up to about 30". Later he said that he tought I had been joking. He asked that next time we call in advance and then they could seat us all upstairs. I told him that we didn't want to be seated and that it's more fun when you can mingle and chat to various people rather than just the 3 or 4 in your immediate vicinity. He didn't understand. Christ on a stick, if it had been my bar I'd have laid out chips and dips and done everything to ensure that the 35 or so drinkers came back the next time. Different mentality I guess. But who was the bearded blokey stood reading his newspaper in the middle of us? Looked like a cross between David Brent and Saddam Hussein.
Got to meet a TTer who I already knew. That was a bit bizarre. Just goes to show, you never know who you might be talking to here
I wouldn't overly recommend the food. Sure the portions were sizeable enough to satisfy the most ravenous of hungers, but I found the food to be a little bland. Still though for the prices and the range of options available it's certainly excellent value for money. Plus with Helles knocking in at €2.60 I've no complaints. Apart from the lack of Mojito that is.

Tend to agree with Keydeck, not any better or worse than GM's, just different, but was seemingly nice to go to a different part of town for a change. Through speaking to other regulars the turnout was better than normal despite no free beer offer? Hence it was a little crowded, but only
because so many people showed up. Maybe food for thought about the next meet up next week?
@Bob any chance we could open it up and ask people to suggest other venues on a rotating weekly basis, other than GM's. I know they sponsor it n all but still would be beneficial to those people new to TT and Munich to experience the other delights of it other than GM's,
Kilians et al?

You want a slap love?
I used to live there.
Now all the
really cool people live in
Neuhausen (obviously ha ha), but Westend is creeping up fast in terms of art and culture (I kid you not).
Schwabing isn't what it used to be, rental prices have gone down a lot more than in the rest of the city and Schwabing also has the problem of too many drunken teenagers in clapped-out jalopys causing hassle. Munich's scene is getting older, something which the opening of places like 8 seasons and move towards lounges rather than club bars.
It was all
Schwabing then Haidhausen and now
Haidhausen is on the way back down. Gärtnerplatz is up there as well at the moment (but the clock is ticking on that one).
*goes back to talk of remembering when it was all fields around here and oh what about the price of cheese...*

I'm on for suggesting somewhere different for next Tuesday. As we discussed last night, it's of benefit to newer people to get a gentle introduction to different places rather than the usual Irish/Aussie bar scene.
A few simple criteria fulfilled and there's plenty of locations around the city to keep it interesting.

The 'Places other than GM's' idea has been discussed before
Future of the Toytown Tuesdays @ Murphy's. Not a bad idea at all - what I like about Günthers is that it's nice and near to my office so I can actually make it 'after work' drinks. On a school night I can't always be arsed to go home and then out again. On the up side that would give me time to eat at home rather than at GMs.
Frankly though I don't go as much as I used to, so perhaps it's not really fair of me to have an input anyway - the regulars (you know who you are) should probably decide how they want to play it - just for God's sake don't make this another 'Curry Night or Other Night' thread that ends up with everybody threatening to kill each other for the sake of a night out on the piss...

Mar 10 2004, 8:54 am
Da boy makes sense. Anyone can organise whatever they want. It's a free country. GMs has been and I'm sure will continue to be a good night out during the week. It was only the football that made people think of somewhere different last night anyway. (Glad I scooted off at a reasonable hour though). We'll see what happens next Tuesday.

The fact that CAN was fuller than GMs makes it clear going somewhere else was a good idea. About 8 people admitted to living just around the corner. But that still doesn't account for the popularity. Remember there was no free beer.
I'm not crazy about GMs, and probably a lot of people like to try an alternative. One where the beer is cheaper, and the air approaching breathable.
Yes everybod is free to organise whatever they want, and its not a subversive activity. But then everybody will wait for somebody else to organise something. So discussing here what would be desired is positive and necessary.
BTW absolutely agree with Keydeck about the table thing. Circulating was good once we overlfowed the three little round tables. Otherwise we'd have been stuck around a big table like your traditional German Stammtisch

The fact that I made it home without absolutely reeking of smoke was one more plus for not being at Günther's.

Mar 10 2004, 9:49 am
Last week about 10 people showed up to GMs in total I believe - having said that, about two or three weeks prior to that about 30 were there. I'm not entirely sure that the venue is that critical - these things seem to be cyclical. End of the month may, for example, be quieter as people haven't yet been paid...
Just a thought, but my impression of the machinations of TT is that venue isn't that critical - in fact nothing is. Sometimes it'll be busy, and other times not - rhyme and reason therefor is not something I've ever been able to establish.
