StattAuto München? Any thoughts, pros, cons etc.?

mmm i just had a quick look at their price calculator. Either i am calculating wrong or their prices are more expensive than a rental car. That can't be right, oder?

I'm a member. Its great.
Remember prices include petrol plus you rent for the time you need in hourly increments. So a trip to Ikea is a 4 hour rental, compared with a normal car rental where you would book for 24hrs minimum.

I am a member for the last few months. It depends on your driving habits, where you live and how organised you are. The difference between Hertz etc. is that you can rent the car for a couple of hours and it really is quite cheap.
The rule of thumb I use is that if I have a car for a week it is around EUR 100 and the petrol is twice the price. If you take into account tax/insurance etc. for someone like myself who only drives occasionally it is not a bad deal.
One downside: it is annoying if you want to rent a car for a day; you often can't because someone has booked it for an hour. I'll probably just buy a car soonish for the drive into work when the weather changes for the worse 'cos I know my strengths and weaknesses and it is unlikely I will ever be able to outplan the Germans!
http://stattauto-muenchen.de/english.shtml -- yeah I'm a member and I do the website as well. Absolutely love it.
OG -- They're cheaper than a rental car because you don't pay for the gas. You don't pay for insurance either. And those hourly increments are great!
You don't have to pay for a parking space which can run you 150 Euros a month. You never have to do maintenance, wash the car, pump up the tires, etc... Actually I know we've had a topic on this before so this'll probably get merged. Madame Showem?
Link to the Price Calculator for good measure:

thanks!!
Moran, surely u can book cars for a whole day (if u book in advance)?!!
Gen, if I goto a Wednesday signup.. will I be able to walk out a member.. or does it take some time for paper work etc to be processed?
I'm just in the process of booking a yearly
MVV ticket, once that's through, I'll signup I think. (correct, that a season ticket makes it cheaper right?).
correct on the
MVV info. Here's the PDF on it:
http://www.stattauto-muenchen.de/_download...ndervertrag.pdfIf you can check out cars right away... I can't remember. Call and ask, they have people who can speak English just on regular staff too! And tell them Gen sent you, then I get a referral bonus. (OK so Speakfreak and Moran have sent you too, but you don't know their real names I bet, ha ha ha!)
I have been a member of Stattauto for four years and can only recommend it. It is especially great if you go on big trips in the summer and need a van. (Just book early). The vans are much much cheaper than you would get through a normal rental agency. You can get bike racks, ski racks etc. and chains for free if you put them on yourself or pay a little to have them installed. It is also connected to the DBahn carsharing system which can get you cars all over Germany. But the very best thing to recommend them is the service which is very professional and friendly.
Aha. So egg, make sure you tell them Gen who does the website sent you, even though there's another Jen who's on...

I was kind of thinking of going up to this as there is a depot around the corner from me. Does anyone have any recent experiences? Also, do you know if you join whether you can join as a couple or only individually? Or if I get my husband to join up, can I drive the cars under his name etc?

Does anyone know if any of the cars are automatics?

@Renia:
You can join as a couple and both partners can rent cars and drive them alone. I don't know whether they both partners can rent cars at the same time.
Personal experience: Been a satisfied customer for three years. It's great.
@Wibble:
The small Smart cars are always automatic. Some of the small Dahaitsu Sirius and the Toyota Yaris also. Most of the cars though are stick-shift cars. You can see it which ones have automatic when you book a car
There are depots around the corner from nearly everyone. See them here with Google Maps on STATTAUTO:

It is a great system and has saved me thousands over the past few years. What makes the system is the flexibility. If you need a specific car on a specific day then booking 2 weeks in advance is advisable, but I have never been in the situation where I couln't get a car at all when booking 2 days before. You can take a klein Auto for half an hour to go shopping, a Transit Transporter for a day to go to Ikea or move house, or a saloon for 2 weeks to go on a tour of Europe. They are very fair regarding damage and wear and tear, very helpful and obliging when it comes to extras (they have fitted a ski box for me and delivered the car to me at home at 10pm so that I could go boarding the next day. Book on the internet or give them a call. Cars are all well maintained and the number of cars and stations is increasing and covers the ever increasing number of people who have joined as members.
It's partnered with DBRent Carsharing too so you can use cars in other German cities. Joe Franken is driving a DB Car in Stuttgart right now.

You can also use cars in Switzerland, not just all over Germany.

If you're only an "occasional" user, I'd have thought you'd save far more than that. You certainly save on the stress of whether it's about to break down or get stolen – you just return it when you've finished with it and forget about it.
I agree. The 2500 is just an example. Interestingly enough, the whole article (in the Finance section of the paper!) is based on saving money, not saving the environment -- and that's the main reason most people join. It's just cheaper.
