Two unprovoked knife attacks in Munich-Haidhausen

Dangerous lunatic at large, beware!

Late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, in separate incidents, two people were stabbed in the back with a knife by an unknown man, unprompted and without even noticing there was someone behind them. Both incidents took place near Rosenheimer Platz.

The second one was right in front of my house! I woke up at about 7am to four police cars and an ambulance's flashing lights. Along with the entire sidewalk around it taped off. Scary stuff. sad.gif

Jeez. We were just wandering around down there late last night. How creepy. ohmy.gif
britMUC
there are a good few weirdos in this part of town, especially betwen rosenheimerplatz and ostbahnhof, but mostly junkies by the looks of it, harmless too. this is pretty scary though!!
Carm
wow, I was stumbling out of the Outland about 3.30 am on saturday, thank god I took a taxi.
But the area around the Ostbahnhof is, well, there are some seedy people hanging out there.
LauKatOD
Seems the neighborhood is going downhill...weren't there a couple of attacks in the area during the Summer as well?
britMUC
yeah, summer is worse. a lot of weirdos hanging around outdoors, drinking beer and pretty much making a bit of a nuisance of themselves without actually breaking any law. less of them around in winter, and now that the Weihnachtsmarkt will be opening on Weissenburgerplatz, there will be even less of them hanging around the square. generally though, there does seem to be good police presence in the area, both day & night. hope they step up the patrols in light of these two attacks.

according to Sueddeutsche, a 30 year old man has been arrested (no further details available).
britMUC
... that was pretty quick. the bavarian police don't mess around, that's for sure.

This is completely inappropriate to say, but every time I read this thread title, it sounds as though there were two unpremeditated attacks carried out by a criminal with little ambition or enthusiasm.
Yeti
Me too, unmotivated knife attacks = slacker stabbings.

Topic title now changed from "unmotivated" to "unprovoked"
oli2000
Well thank God they got him, he was arrested in Aichach.

The man is seriously ill and extremely dangerous. He was in trouble with the Police in the area already shortly before the knife attacks took place, which is why they were able to locate and arrest him so quickly.

Blimey. A total nutcase. Ah well, he will be released in a few years after some "social rehabilitation"

It's all happening because trading restrictions have been eased in parts of Germany and some are starting to allow Sunday trading...

I have been finishing work bewtween 1am and 5am the last year in Haidausen, I have not come accross to much weird stuff in the early hours of the morning (unless provoked by me involving a certain kind of dressing). I know by face some of these homeless junkie looking people, They are pretty much well happy if they have there desired drug and somewhere to han out, I have only had to move the odd one away from the from the Outland a couple of times.

Its a alot safer from Sydney where you come accross trouble in most neighbourhoods that are inner city.

Maybe if he had a 24hr Kmart to go shopping in he would have avoided this whole problem.

Yes, the guy has been arrested. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung he is an absolute nut-case who heard the famous voices in his head telling him to stab people.
The police were able to identify and find him due to various lucky circumstances: Shortly before the first attack he was at Café Atlas and not able to pay the bill, the cops who detained and questioned him received a strange impression and noticed that he was armed with a small jacknife. After questioning him they checked the registry, found out that he had been living in Rablstrasse in Haidhausen, then moved to Rosenheim, then to Aichach.
They contacted his sister who confirmed that her brother is mentally deranged, paranoid and a short-fused time-bomb. The Munich police contacted the Aichach police station but by then the damage had been done, the guy had been released and had attacked two strangers. However, his tendency to use public transport without a ticket proved his undoing - he was caught on the train to Rosenheim and reported. He then took a taxi from Rosenheim to Aichach (143km!), couldn't pay, the taxi driver called the cops - voilà. Arrested and identified as the suspect, locked up, we can all once more feel safe on the streets of Haidhausen.

Bet the cabbie isn't minding the loss of fare when s/he considers what could have happened.

Bet s/he wishes there had been a reward offered.

How would a house alarm help? Both attacks were on the street.

... A number of reasons all of which explained below!!!

QUOTE (LauKatOD @ Nov 20 2006, 9:33 am) *
The second one was right in front of my house!

If you were stood outside the house unlocking the door etc, and you were attacked you could use the key fob to raise the alarm, which would mean that you would have assistance on route without the need to make a call, as the alarm does it for you whilst you look for an escape route, or defend yourself.

All the below show that the area is not as secure as it use to be like many places in the world! You only have to look at the road I live in, in the UK where crime has more than doubled in the few years I have lived here.

And yes the below is very good advice <no personal endorsements!> (may have to get some ‘branded’ ones to give away with the systems lol).
Also is that for lady's to keep a small travel sized Impulse deodorant can in there purse/handbag, apparently it is as bad as mace/pepper spray, but legal to carry on the streets.<Again no personal endorsements!>.

However again if you had an alarm it could be getting you the assistance you need whilst you have your hands free to use such home protection!

There are many other benefits too such as the integrated fire alarm, temp sensors that can tell if you freezer has stopped working whilst you are away! Etc.
LauKatOD
In fairness, there wouldn't be much the people who got stabbed could have done. Its not like the guy was trying to steal their wallets or anything...He snuck up, stabbed them, and ran away.
cinzia
Try as you might to sell us on them, the-daddy, I think most parts of Munich are too safe for home alarms. In the parts that aren't so safe, it's a good bet most residents couldn't afford one. In the wealthier parts of town, people already have them. Trust your own poll.

We are all potential victims of psychopaths like this knife guy, as well as the guy who broke into the elementary school in NRW earlier this week, unfortunately. No amount of shelling out for security devices is going to protect you from everyone.

There are certainly lots of skally junkies, but they are harmless. even if they did want to hurt you, they're too wasted to even throw a punch. Lived there for 5 years now, and it's been basically the same junkie crowd all the time. It's actually good entertainment sometimes, because they are always getting into arguments with eachother. Just a bit annoying in Tengelmann when you have some twatted young guy/girl trying to buy a beer with pennies, but his eyes don't work properly anymore.

That happened just around the corner.

I was stayed in that night because I was hungover - Who said drinking is not good for you? smile.gif
