Snow in Germany - where to find it and when

Christmas holiday in a log cabin etc.

Blimey - It's been a while since I was last on here. I'm back in the UK having moved back from Spain in March for anyone who's interested. Still got my pad in Munster and folks in Berlin and still out and about in the Fatherland with work every other week, but need some advice.

The girlfriend and I are thinking of spending a week before or just after Christmas in Germany on Holiday. Want the full-on snow, Gluhwein, open fire, Christmas Market experience. Any suggestions as to where and when? Would prefer to rent a log cabin or house rather than hotel it.

Any input gratefully received!

Hope everyone I know is well and OK.
Cheers!
Simon.

If you want a Christmas market, then it would have to be before Christmas. How about the Black Forest? Or somewhere romantic like Rothenburg?

Snow is certainly difficult to predict. But your chances increase along with altitude, which is why the Black Forest or the Alps spring to mind. There's never any guarantee of snow.

You would also find it easier to find somewhere to stay before Christmas rather than after, although the chances of snow are less.

Good point! So looking to go before Christmas!

methinks you need Austria rather than the fatherland with your wish list

Head for Arlberg. St Anton springs to mind.

Dunno, it's great for skiers, but also damn expensive. I'd think of Mittenwald. Cute town, high chances of snow.

Just come to Munich. Seems that once the snow starts, it never ends. dry.gif

Oberhof (nr Erfurt) in Thuringia is worth considering.

In the good old days, it became well-established (and remains) as a training centre for Winter sports (skiing, ski-jumping, tobagganing u.s.w), as (within DDR anyway) it got the snow earliest and longest due to its altitude. I was there the week before Xmas in 2003 and they had tons of the white stuff.

Interestingly, they mostly manage to get around with simple hatchbacks with snow tyres, with very few X3s etc around. Nearby Erfurt is worth a visit in case the snow doesn't turn up, especially the Wartburg (castle) and Wartburg (car) museum.
