I would like to join you guys tonight at Schleusengarten. This would be the first time.
Just for the record: I am a German journalist. My name's Peter.
At what time do you usually go?

Hi Everyone - can't wait to see y'all tonite.
Pete - we say it starts around 8, but most don't actually make an appearance until around 8:30 PM.
Check out the profiles - most of us have pictures up. For those who know me, I'm planning on having Riddick (the dog) with me - it's too perfectly nice weather to pass that opportunity up.

PS - to those of you who don't have pictures up... You should consider it!

I dunno...it's TOTALLY far and I don't think I can get home from there. Trains stop early on Thursday, can't ride bikes...
I like the idea of doing something outside though...isn't there a biergarten at Mauer Park or is that only on weekend flea market days? Or any park, really...I saw a nice one at the oranienburger strasse area once too by the canal across Museum Insel...it had lounge chairs!
If we pushed for loretta maybe we could do it earlier this week instead so we have more time rather than all scrambling to get transportation home?

LOL Venus, If I can make it to P-berg twice a month from Teltow (which is actually further and less connected than Wansee - on average 1.5 hours to get there) I would hope that the P-berg people could try it at Wansee once in a summer.
I agree re starting it earlier - maybe 7 or 7:30 (the biergarten website says it closes at 11 pm). I will note though that you can take the RE's from here up to Zoo or the Sbahn up and have a relatively fast commute. RE's don't cost anymore if you have an ABC ticket for berlin.
However, if it doesn't work I'll deal.

I vote against Wansee. I know it's lovely, and a nice summery place to go. (And yes, despite the weather I have been out there this summer.) But it's just too damned far. I'm all for varying locations every now and then to spread the love, but the reality is that P'berg/Mitte is convenient for about 70% of us, F'shain/K'berg is convenient for about 29% of us, and Wansee is convenient for about 1% of us. So it just doesn't make sense. Sorry, Rose.
Gooner, if you vouch for the
Hbf place, that's good enough for me. And it's the Hbf, for chrissakes, we know it's got a few reasonable transport connections.

I can handle the vote against Wansee, but I'm just wondering where you got the statistics from Nate.
By my count, the last couple I've been to had a pretty good variation of people that weren't from P-berg and were trying to NOT have it in P-berg because it seems like we're always having to GO to P-berg because that's where the main "event planners" are - even when the "events" aren't. (I seem to remember a few threads on the please don't have it in P-berg again!)
Yeah, I know I'm one of the few that don't live in Berlin (there are several of us in Potsdam, Zehelendorf, etc. that make the trip to Berlin to go to events) but I'd hope you can vote for yourself as opposed to making up on the spot statistics just beause the majority of people you know live near you.
Meanwhile, I'll see you guys Thursday wherever that's chosen.

Oh yeah, those numbers are completely made up. But as with all good hyperbole the foundation is in truth: the large majority of Berlin Toytowners are going to find the eastern and central parts of the city (P'berg, Mitte, F'Shain, K'berg) easiest to get to. At the very least, we should aim to have our events somewhere in Zone A; the very last stop in Zone B (in any compass direction) just doesn't make sense.
If there really is a groundswell of people from Potsdam,
Zehlendorf, and the surrounding areas who want to attend Thursday night drinks, perhaps it's time to start up a separate Potsdam event. That would accommodate the far-western contingent without asking the eastern-based majority to spend hours in transit.
phoenix-rose
Aug 7 2007, 12:54 pm
I suppose in the end, it doesn't matter.
Who you know is based on the area you live. Where you can get to/from is based on the area you live. Let's be brutal. P-berg isn't easy to get to, unless you live there. Once the u-bahns shut down, for those of us NOT there we're stuck there or paying for a cab.
I am still in Berlin, even though I don't live in P-berg and am halfway between Berlin and Potsdam. Those in Zehelendorf are still in Berlin, as are those around Wittenburg Platz. and Charlottenburg.
I've made my suggestion, which isn't gonna fly because we have to have it closer to where y'all (from Pberg) think it needs to be - despite the idea that maybe we could get some of those that aren't able to attend alot to come since it would be more a reasonable transit for 1 week and thereby expand a network.
*shruggs*
HBF it is, and I'll be the one to spend hours in transit, while the people I know from my area - despite wanting to attend simply will opt out; again.
~Rose
PS I didn't think the idea would go anyhow - but it does show a point - that despite the "idea" that it's supposed to be all over - it's not really. It's a P-berg thing.

Last time I looked at a map, the
Hbf was north of the Tiergarten, west of Mitte, in old West Berlin. Or, to put it another way, the Hbf is very distinctly not in Prenzlauer Berg, and this week's drinks are very distinctly not a "P-berg thing."
If you choose to live in the suburbs, you usually have to travel inward to participate in social events. That's not a sign of cruelty or exclusion on the part of those who live in the city, it's just part of the bargain you make by living farther out. You get a bigger apartment for a lower rent, but you live farther from everything.

Nate, I wasn't just referring to this week. Last week, it was in Tiergarten area. COOL.
In general, however, this has been in P-berg week after week because p-berg people, while I do like you in general, have an attitude of goodness forbid someone else makes a suggestion that is out of the way or takes more than 15 minutes to get to.
You know I make an effort to go anyhow, but I hear this fairly continuously from those not "in" pberg. Thus, you wind up excluding - perhaps when you don't even know you are. This concerns me a bit because I think that the group in the area could grow and have more interesting individuals added to the network.

Ok guys...calm down. I agree with you both in that the whole idea to start with was to get to see other parts of Berlin and go out to different areas and that those people who chose the bar obviously had the advantge of choosing one near them. Fine...
As the majority of people on here live in Prenzlauer Berg of course the majority of places chosen will be in Prenzlauer Berg. Law of averages. But having said that no one from Charlottenberg/Schöneberg etc have ever offered up a place to have the Thursday night drinks. I offered someone the chance one week when they complained about it always being in Prenzlauer Berg and they declined.
The last couple of weeks have been open to suggestions and no one who lives in Charlottenberg/Schöneberg etc has come up with a suggestion. So instead of complaining that the Thursday drinks are always in Prenzlauer Berg, suggest something else. Ok, within reason. Wannsee is a hell of a long way out of town, but something more accessible to the majority that is also easy for those people who don't live in Prenzlauer Berg/Kreuzberg to get to.

Ok, so let these people who are excluded without us knowing it choose next week's venue.

Aug 7 2007, 1:57 pm
I agree with moving the venues around but we have to consider is no matter what part of Berlin people live in North, East, West, South, the most logical place to have a gathering handy for all is somewhere in the middle which happens to be the city center. Unfortunately this means that those further out will travel further to gather, but if we start moving drinks out of zone 1 then we really are going to start excluding people. ie From what I understand there are a few TTers living out in Pankow and Wansee would be a massive hike for them. and so on and so forth I am sure there are other examples but you get the drift.
As for most venues being in P'Berg I recall a thurs drinks a while ago where we had a similar conversation and the P'Berg people held off suggesting and eventually a P'Berg bar was suggested by a non P'Berg resident.
As gooner gal suggests start suggesting things outside of P'Berg but with in reason. I personally don't know anything out of the area I live in and would really like to see some other parts of the city. (well except a cool bar (hey GoodGrief) in Charlottenburg called the Klo but never suggested this cause I thought it was a bit small for our group.)

I've never been there but I'd second Zollpackhaus. It's NOT in P-berg, it's easy to get to and central...sounds fair enough to me.
It's not that I'm opposed to go to Wannsee in fact I'd really like to go but not Thursday NIGHT. I'm not vetoing it completely I'm just speaking for myself and others who may have to wake up in the morning and need to stay central on weeknights. I'm sure it's the same for you but like Nate said the majority of us live centrally.

We don't just suggest them because it's close to us...we suggest it because we live here and it's what we know. If no one else speaks up someone is eventually going to and if a large number of tters live in pberg a lot of venues will be suggested there.
