does that area around postbahnhof actually do bars? the only one i know would be bar 25 and i doubt Toytowners would be willing to pay to get into a bar...

Stubbs, Erbeer is next weeks destination! I didnt post that last week cause you couldnt make it!!! So Someone pick somewhere else!
Wait, next week like July 12?
I was hoping that someone who actually lives in Friedrichshain would suggest something. Neither Postbahnhof itself nor Maria (the other place I know near Ostbahnhof) is particularly appropriate for a pub night. I was going to suggest Rodina (S+U Jannowitzbrücke) but I'm not entirely sure they're still open, since their homepage is now a mirror of the Russendisko homepage.

Erdbeer sounds good to me. Birthday drinks, woohoo! (Jtw, is it someone/everyone else's birthday too, or do I just count as "everyone"?) However, we all know I am crap at organising, so someone else please take the baton on my (and everyone else's) behalf...

You're "everyone" for Thursday, but Friday is giseladabomb's birthday (I think she's even turning 25 as well), but I'll be out of town for her bowling party, so I was trying to convince her to go to drinks.
Erdbeer is not the worst choice, since it's not so far from Postbahnhof (U2 one stop to Alex and then S-bahn two stops to Ostbahnhof), plus it's close to my place, so I could also conceivably drop back on my way home from Beirut.

well because its tuesday and no one has posted anything near postbahnhof, and i personally am not going to see beirut, I am suggesting Erdbeer, cause their strawberry daiquiris are just so darn good!
If you guys go to Erdbeer I think I'll have to make an appearance!

Okay, kids, I know it's getting on summer and we're all busy, but it's Tuesday already and nobody has claimed the baton for this week. Does anyone have a bar they'd desperately like to go to this week? If so, step up and take hold of the baton. If not, watch this space, and I'll post a spot.

none of this repeating lark, i.e. somewhere new would be good. dr. pong's on eberswalderstrasse is always good for a laugh, although i'm not too sure how well a bunch of rowdy (i'm looking at you mhairi) foreigners would go down. or "klub der republik" on pappelallee or "club der visionäre" on the canal south of schlesisches tor which i think is the bees' knees. (multiple beeses, hence the apostrophe, beeses, hmmm, *john leaves to have mull*)

Bees carry pollen back to the hive in sacs on their legs. The allusion is to the concentrated goodness to be found around the bee's knee.

cat's pyjamas, smarty pants (?)
mistermagoo
Jul 10 2007, 7:14 pm
Pajamas were a relatively new fashion in the 1920s. The term "cat" was beginning to be used as a term to describe the out going and unconventional jazz-age flappers.
Where smarty pants comes from is, as usual with slang, rather unclear. But we do know that smarty by itself dates from the 1860s (it turns up as a dismissive retort in Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer in 1876); the OED says this referred to a “would-be smart or witty person. So it looks as though smarty-pants (and its British relative, smarty-boots) were elaborations on the theme, perhaps because smarty by itself was becoming shopworn.

I vote we invade "klub der republik" on pappelallee 81 this week.
Have been enjoying the randomly placed thread of the origines of sayings, but it's time to get down to business people.

Jul 11 2007, 7:42 am
kdr sounds good, but I've gone the place many times recently and it doesn't seem to be open on a regular schedule. You - that is an unspecified "you," whoever is the baton holder - might want to double check. Or make a backup plan.
krostitzer
Jul 11 2007, 8:10 am
hmm if there's no baton holder, i'd suggest zu mir oder zu dir or dr. pong's as a backup to kdr. dr. pong's might implode if more than 15 people show up, though.
there are of course many possibilities in the neighborhood but i don't know all the names. there's a suspiciously small red bar, for example, that looks interesting...
still searching for a place with cheap cocktails and a good-sized pool table.

It's a good bar, Johnny, but it violates your 'no-repeats' policy; we were just there about six weeks ago. Plus it's forecast to rain, which rather takes the shine off an outdoor place. So I'm leaning towards the other place on Pappelallee -- what do you say, should we call it?

Right. So anyone heading up late should know that Klub der Republik is apparently impossible to find. I have unconfirmed reports that everyone's heading to Zu Mir oder Zu Dir on Lychener Str 15. If you choose to phsyically abuse Johnny for choosing a nonexistant bar, that's your prerogative; just remember to take it easy on him, as he's had his jabs this week.

Vicky and I were thinking - weather permitting, of course, so only if the forecast definitely says no rain, and an ok temperature - that it would be really nice to go to Oststrand this week...I know that last time that was a disaster due to rain, but in fairness, we were all a little over-optimistic back then, and arranged to meet there DESPITE weather reports of rain, preferring to think Berliner Fenster Wetter had got it wrong. This time we'll know better. So far Google weather keeps suggesting (regardless of which day you check it) that the next two days are going to be gorgeous, and that the third day is going to be rainy. If that pattern continues, the forecast tomorrow should suggest rain for Thursday, but by Wednesday they'll be forecasting sun and scorching temperatures again!! Let's say that a definite plan should definitely be in place by Wednesday, 'cos back-up plans never work. I just think that if possible, we should make the most of the sun while it's around.
