gooner_gal
HURRAH!!! XBERG AGAIN biggrin.gif

Shall be able to walk stagger home...
wiggle
Will definitely attempt the wall crossing to come to Kreuzberg, and if I make it in one piece, we will really have something to celebrate. ; )
The Wanderer
is it still Kreuzberg over their then ?
globalgirl
I managed to not only find K.burg twice last week I managed to make it home in one piece with my handbag intact and everything! Looking forward to making the daring journey down there again this week. See you all there! (hope all my fellow p.bergers are also up for the adventure to distant lands)
ScotsLassinBerlin
Globalgirl, I think I might need you to hold my hand!!
gooner_gal
Shall I put out signs so that you lot don't get lost on your major adventure to the other side of the city? wink.gif
ScotsLassinBerlin
Thanks gooner gal, I might just need it!
globalgirl
I'll hold your hand anytime scotslass. dont need an excuse.
Andru
Hi, I've never been to one of these gatherings before, but as this place is two minutes from my flat, well, now it seems is the time...Looking forward to meeting some new English-speaking folk! I'm assuming you won't be hard to find as you'll be the large group speaking English...
jtw
Some of us also have pictures in our profiles.

Not only is this place in Kreuzberg, it's not neat Kottbusser Tor for once, so I'd actually have to change trains (gasp!). Undecided (again!) whether I and my approved-for-20kg-Belastung foot will make it this week.
Ali_in_berlin
Don't worry Andru, I'll be wandering around not knowing what anyone looks like as well. That should at least establish who you and I are! Looking forward to meeting all of you.
stubbs
This is upsetting, im missing all the newbs, sadly I have to work thursday.
globalgirl
So sad you can't make it stubbs we'll also all be celebrating my new fancy smansy completely legal right to work in Germany for the next year!! Hooray!! See you all later. Looking forward to seeing new faces there as well.
wiggle
And just to get you all excited about tonight, check out the gallery for some pix from last week's Burns Night gathering at Hairy Mary's!
Artist_Aus_Seattle
crappo, even further away than before.

when are you going to have one near f'hain?
gooner_gal
Well why don't you organise one if you don't like the locations we pick. Wiggle is up next week with her choice and then how about you organising one and we will all have to traipse to your part of town!?
newfoundlander
Did anyone find a black scarf left at Malheur last night? sad.gif
Artist_Aus_Seattle
I dont know any good places off hand, I'm relatively new.
Pburg was closer.
EnglishmanInBerlin
Thanks to everyone who made it last night - especially those who came from the distant lands on the other side of the wall!

For those of you who may have mistaken the bright white flashes for some side effect of the alcohol you were drinking - I can assure you that the alcohol in Kreuzberg is actually safe to consume and that the bright white flashes were in fact me taking photographs which you may look at here!

Newfoundlander - I'll ask in the bar later for the scarf & see if the staff picked it up.

Bring on next Thursday! smile.gif
jtw
Artist, the Tobias Panwitz concert Tuesday is in F'hain. And Mitte next Thursday may be even closer than the usual P'Berg deal for you.
newfoundlander
Thanks EIB... let me know if something turns up.
EnglishmanInBerlin
No luck with the scarf I'm afraid - I asked the staff but nothing was found. Hope you find it eventually though!
wiggle
Yes, I wrested the baton from Dan last week and we will have a respite from the Prenzlauer Berg-Kreuzberg class struggle this week because drinks will be in Mitte, the Switzerland of Berlin. tongue.gif

The bar I have picked is officially called "Bar an der Karl-Marx Allee," but there is no sign outside. You can't miss it, though; it's the one that looks like a big glass cube, right next to Cafe Moskau. Nice, loungy place with nice, loungy music and there should be plenty of room for our ever-growing group.

The address is Karl-Marx-Allee 36 and it's about a 5-minute walk from Alex or you can pop up at the U5 Schillingstrasse stop and there you are. Let's say 8 pm and see everyone there Feb. 8!
Davis
if you just can't wait until Thursday for drinks and English conversation, then please join me this Tuesday at 8mm for my club night, Reckless Operation!
i don't want to "over-crosspost", so please check out the post labeled:
Clubnight: Reckless Operation @ 8mm - Berlin
thanks,
davis

ok ive been talking about coming on one of these for quite some time.. am is still invitesd? ;o)... wheres that sign-up sheet...
globalgirl
Most people don't end up using the sign up sheet for thursday nights since it doesn't really matter how many people show up. We normally get anywhere from 15 to 30 people every thursday. Anyone wanting to meet new people is welcome to come along.

See you all thursday! ( and hopefully by then I'll have gotten over this odd insomnia thing and be mentally present as well)
gooner_gal
Judging by the sign-up sheet it'llbe interesting this week

Total confirmations so far: 5 (3 girls, 1 boy, 1 eunuch); 25 places remaining
wilcohawk
Damn eunuchs. I mean really.
Artist_Aus_Seattle
finally, its in friedrichshain!
you say its in mitte, but you look at mitte, then at f'hain, you'll see it's in f'hain, comrades.
that place is freaky, been wanting to check it out.
jatindutt

Just come on out; everyone's welcome.

Nate, if you want to make next week's really obscure, how about Ludwigsfelde? I'm not sure they have bars there, but maybe we can break into the Zollamt and look for confiscated liquor to drink. biggrin.gif
jtw
Nate, I believe the baton is yours...
gooner_gal
Cheers for that jtw...wiggle and I were discussing this very point last night!!

So come on Chelski Boy...where are we off to?
travelnate
Yes, somehow the guy who moved to Berlin less than a month ago, and who's been back in London for half of that month, is in charge of picking the bar. Good idea.

But I rise to any challenge, especially if it involves vast amounts of alcohol. And I'm pleased to announce that this week's drinks night will be held in sunny, exotic... Prenzlauer Berg! C'mon, the last two weeks have been in Kreuzberg and F'shain. It's time that drinks night came back to its spiritual home. I'll announce the exact location tomorrow -- but you can rest assured they'll have at least one respectable bottle of bourbon behind the bar. In the meantime, who wants to meet me for some last-minute venue 'research' tonight?
ScotsLassinBerlin
I might be up for that
wiggle
Um, last week was in Mitte, not Friedrichshain, but you have only been living here a month, and newbies often make mistakes. tongue.gif At any rate, looking forward to partying in P-Berg once again!
travelnate
Yes, I know that last week was promised as Mitte, but it obviously wasn't. If the other end of Karl-Marx-Allee is Mitte, then I live in Poland.

To summarize: Good venue. Fun time. Not in Mitte.
gooner_gal
So, a google search and too much time on my hands means I am gonna rain on your parade!!

Bar, Karl-Marx-Allee 36, Berlin Mitte

Yes, last week was in Mitte, as also confirmed by the S-Bahn Berlin schedule search. I think it's even 10178. As for whether "Careless Whisper" was George Michael or Wham!, you both seem to be right. It was released in the UK as George Michael and in the US as "Wham! Featuring George Michael", if Wikipedia is to be believed.
gooner_gal
And as he is a Brit, the Island is the more important of those two snippets of information - I am sticking to my guns!!
wiggle
How is it living in Poland, anyway, Nate? Had any good borscht lately? biggrin.gif

THE LOCATION FOR THIS WEEK'S THURSDAY DRINKS:

After conducting extensive research, I'm pleased to announce that this week's Thursday Drinks will be held at Luxus, on Belforter Str. in Prenzlauer Berg, not far from the Wasserturm. The bar has no sign outside, but it's on Belforter Str. near the corner of Prenzlauer Allee. Look for the green and white light directly across Belforter Str. from the Netto store, and a little hard-to-read sign that says simply "Bar tgl. ab 20:00". We'll be there starting at around 8pm this Thursday.

Some background on Luxus: Mark, the co-proprietor of nearby Hairy Mary's, likes to say that any bar in P'berg can make a killing by simply pretending to be an old East Berlin joint. True enough. But Luxus really *is* an old East Berlin joint. It was a butcher shop before the wall came down, and sat empty for nearly a decade afterwards. It's been a bar since 1998 -- surely long before any of us turned up in Berlin -- and looks like it hasn't been changed in all that time. Although I've never met anyone who's ever heard of the place, it consistently pulls in a good crowd, and has a great vibe. But it'll soon be a victim of gentrification: it's closing this spring, because its building is being redeveloped. So come and enjoy it while you can.

Great bar, good location, cheap drinks, fun people. I'll see you all there on Thursday.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO THIS WEEK'S DRINKS:

If you're taking public transport to Luxus, the M2 tram stop at Prenzlauer Allee / Metzer Str. is about 30 feet away. The U2 stop at Senefelderplatz is the nearest U-bahnhof, about a 5 minute walk.
jtw
It's Belforter Str. 18, for those who need an address.
travelnate
It looks like we should have a pretty good crowd tonight. Who else is coming along?
globalgirl
I'll be there. It's an easy roll down the hill to get home.
EnglishmanInBerlin
I will of course be there! No prizes for guessing where we'll end up towards the end of the night judging by the proximity of this bar to another well known drinking establishment! tongue.gif
travelnate
That was part of the idea, Dan. Looks like Mark is going to come along as well, and make Laura tend to the bar after just landing back in Berlin early this morning. What a gentleman. In any case, at the end of the night we can head over and welcome her back to town.
EnglishmanInBerlin
Sounds like a plan, Cya later! smile.gif
