But convienent mainly for the Princelovieberg lot!
Not any easier than for anyone else...most still have to take a tram to Alex and then the train to Hackescher Markt. It takes just as long as taking the U8 from
Kreuzberg, for example.
I mean I'm lucky. I live pretty much on the p-berg/mittle border but most in the p-berg crowd don't, so...
And what's with the snarky 'Princelovieberg' attitude?

QUOTE (jimbobs @ Jul 16 2008, 5:46 pm)

Hi! I'm moving to Berlin in a few weeks, and definitely plan to come to a thursday night drinks. I just wondered why there are two separate groups?
One group (this one) has been going since 2006. We meet in Prenzlauerberg or Mitte about 60% of the time, and maybe 20% of the time in Friedrichshain and maybe 20% of the time in
Kreuzberg or the west. Our bar choices range quite a bit, from neighborhood places (like Hairy Mary's) to beer gardens (like the one in Viktoriapark) to cocktail bars (like this week's pick) to dirty little dive bars (like Morgenrot). Some weeks we get 20 or 25 people, others we get 50 or 60, depending on the location and what else is going on in town.
A couple months ago, a few people who live in Kreuzberg decided (and I'm summarizing here, for the sake of brevity) that drinks weren't being held in Kreuzberg often enough, and that they didn't want to ever pay more than 2 euros for a beer, and that they didn't like one of the friendly people who helps organize the main drink nights because... well actually I'm not sure why they didn't like her. (I'm not sure most of them ever came to the main drinks and met her, in fact. And most of the rest of us think she's pretty nice.)
Anyway, they started their own drinks night, one that's always in Kreuzberg, and always in 'alternative' bars where things are very inexpensive. I've never been along to one of the 'alternative' drinks nights, so honestly I don't know too much more about it, other than they usually seem to average around 5 RSVPs each week, and the web site photos for the places they pick usually feature lots of piercings and body art.
So, feel free to choose whichever you think suits you, or to go back and forth between them. And welcome to Berlin!

I'm going to make an early suggestion for next Thursday. Some of you might remember 'Malheur' from many many months ago. It now has new owners, a new look and a new name: '
Tunnel Bar'.
Address: Tunnel Bar, 17 Gneisenaustraße,
KreuzbergU-Bahn: U Gneisenaustraße (U7) or U Mehringdamm (U6/U7)
There's plenty of space outside if the weather's nice and plenty of space inside if not! What does everyone think?

Thanks lolo for the invite. I didn't come because I wasn't in Berlin yesterday. I was there this past weekend but left on Sunday. However, I will be back to Berlin next Thursday and I'm looking forward to meeting you all. See you then!

Malheur was were my very first drinks were held, and I'd be interested in seeing what the new place is like. So, count me in for Tunnel Bar next week!

So last week EnglishmanInBerlin suggested Tunnel Bar, which sounds like a plan. Here's the address again:

Well it looks like the chose of down in k.burg is not very attractive I myself will be going of to see the US presidential candidate of the democratic party Barack Obama. Do a speech not at the Brandenburg gate but it the middle of a hard to secure field near the victory column.
then I am going to the
Bundespressestrand's and get falling down drunk. That is if there is no false flag stuff happening in the park...
so I suggest we forget about k.burg again as it seems like a none starter and all meet up in the Bundespressestrand after the Obama-fest.

Well lolo, the same venue went down very well last time we were there. The only difference is that it's now better as it has a new owner and a new look.
The owner also said he'd put on some special offers on cocktails for us - if anyone has any cocktail requests for this then let me know & I'll tell him.
There's plenty of space outside if the weather's nice and plenty of space inside if not. So if anyone's going to see Obama then I hope to see you "down in
Kreuzberg" afterwards! Otherwise, I hope to see the rest of you there at 8pm!

Hmm, the post reads "Thursday night drinks in Berlin, 8pm July 17 @ Tunnel Bar, 17 Gneisenaustraße " but it's actually tonight, the 24th, yes? Since people are talking about going there after seeing Obama?

Seeing as it's got to Monday with no comments for this week I'm going to suggest the place I was going to last time until someone beat me to it with another cocktail bar in
Kreuzberg. How about
Molotov Cocktail on Oranienstrasse?
They have great cocktails and there's some seating outside and the front is totally open in summer. It's not huge but definitely big enough for us if we're there from 8.

It's every week. This thread hasn't been updated yet because we haven't decided where we'll be going yet (although a suggest has been made and supported!)

All the old posts are cleared every monday morning to make it easier to start a new discussion about where we should go this week and who's coming along.
We usually end up going to the first suitable suggestion, unless there's any great protests. So it seems we've pretty much got our choice for the week already.

Ah cripes, I thought Monday evening would be plenty of time to be first in with a suggestion...I went with a couple of friends to the German-American Volksfest on Saturday night...it was a hoot! We had a great time being kids and then drinking beer. And then being kids again. I thought that even though it is rather south, it would be worth the effort coz a) nice to try something different,

Tennben's band is playing that night and a number of people are already going to see them anyhoo, c) they have a mechanical bull. If we end up going I will ride the mechanical bull for your amusement.
It's in Dahlem. I know what you're thinking, I thought the same: where the hell is Dahlem? Well, it's a little further south-west than
Schöneberg but the U3 goes directly to the volksfest.
Here's the website with the most bizarre mix of theme's I've ever seen:
http://www.deutsch-amerikanisches-volksfest.de/e-start.htmThey have an area next to the bull and a music tent that would be perfect for TT. I know most people won't like the location but it would be nice to try something different for a change, no?
alex_m
Jul 28 2008, 6:52 pm
Obviously what I was trying to say was... I forgot Ben's band were playing that night so can we just postpone my suggestion? Or people who don't want to go all the way to Dahlem (which is a little further than just past
Schöneberg!) go to
Kreuzberg? After a day a work I'm not sure I want to go all that way although I'd love to see the band!
EnglishmanInBerlin
Jul 28 2008, 8:13 pm
The Volksfest sounds like a great idea! The U3 isn't that difficult to get to, there's live music and it's something different.

I recon we split this thursday and start a separate event for those who want to head down to the Volksfest. That way we have one event for people who just want a chat in a bar and one for those who want the live music etc.

Hi, I just joined the board, and just moved to berlin 3 days ago. Have there been any final decisions about where this event will be? I would really dig meeting some people.
Mary in Berlin
Jul 29 2008, 10:32 am
That would be fine by me as I realise not everyone will want to go that distance (though I will note that this is on my way home from work! That's how much I train everyday...you get used to it...) So this week the Second Great Toytown Schism and next week, the Reunification of the Dahlem and Mitte chapters ;-)?
Anyway, so unfortunately Tennben's band is playing in a different area to the main bar at the Volksfest. This might add a little confusion, but not much, as we'll be only one of two areas. Also unfortunately, a coyboy hat will be of no use at this thing as a marker...every man and his poodle are wearing them. Though I have a very obvious mop of brown curly hair that might work just as well, if not better. Send me a message if you'd like my mobile number though.
The band starts at 7:30 down at the stage at the end of the "American village". The food is surprisingly good for a fair so you'll be able to find a passable dinner there. The area in front of the stage is pretty small, so we should be easy to spot.
When they're finished there we'll head down to the area with the mechanical bull, sitting on the tables around it outside the music tent. If you want to find that area quickly when coming in the entrance near the U3 then go LEFT at the "Break Dance" ride, not straight ahead (as that way goes meandering past all the rides.)
I would recommend the 'Commander' ride btw...it was so good it gave me a headache and bruises.

Jul 29 2008, 10:55 am
Oh I forgot to add: entrance to the volksfest is 1,50 Euro. I think that covers everything...

alex_m

Depends where you are coming from! It's on Oranienstrasse in
Kreuzberg between Kottbusser Tor and Görlitzer Bahnhof so either U1 or U8.

Jul 29 2008, 12:57 pm
One last thing about the Volksfest group: Tennben reckons his band will go until about 10 pm so we'll be down at the stage at the end of the American Village until then.
Have y'all have fun up in K'berg too!

They both sound good options - I'll definitely be at one of them..both just as easy for me to get to, although after a day at the office the lure of a bar will probably get the best of me.
See you all Thursday.

Seems there is now a second thread for the Volksfest. I'm not sure if I'll make it much further than Molotov in this heat so will just aim on getting that far. See you all thursday.
