Ok where is this local bar?
hairy marys or something
ScotsLassinBerlin
Hairy Mary's address is:

Diedenhoferstrasse 5
Berlin 10405
Prenzlauer Berg (Am Wasserturm)
U-Bahn Senefelderplatz
chrisabraham
So, Hairy Mary's, then?
ScotsLassinBerlin
I know that people are meeting at Marietta's at 8pm.
But some folk are just popping to HAiry Mary's as it isvery close to home!
MarkL
I think I'm going to head to Marietta, so hopefully some people are there.
globalgirl
So once again the strike has messed up our Thirsty Thursday. Unfortunately I didn't finish work til quite late and so I guess we didn't manage to gather a group at Marietta. I know a few people who live within walking distance did end up at Hairy Mary's.

This week was a bit last minute, which is hard when so much planning for transport has to be done. I believe some good ideas are being devised for next week when we'll be a bit more prepared.

Definitely see you next week.
MarkL
yeah, i made my way up to marietta but couldn't find anyone. i just walked up to every group of people there to see what language they were speaking but it was all german mad.gif . that place seemed alright, but it was busy enough as it was (i don't think there were any tables available at all), so i think if you tried to have a normal thursday night thing there it would be pretty crowded.
lolo
Can I take it your suggesting we go to Marietta or you're just bitching. Cos its a new week So new bar. I suggest a bar called YES on Knaack str the preunzlauer allee end.
gooner_gal
Well I won't make it again this week. As long as the BVG strikes I ain't going nowhere...
lolo
Shame as i'd like to finally meet you.
dipling
aww ... gooner, it's been forever. sad.gif

I can relate to that. I'd like to come, but as long as the strike is on i'm pretty much stranded. I arrived in Berlin/got settled in my flat two days before the strike began... Yeah, i'm seeing a lot of the town on foot and can walk to Alexanderplatz in around an hour (takes about that between waiting for S-bahn...travelling on the S-bahn...) but I can't see me walking from Neukölln to Prenz'berg!! Was last Thursday a bit of a no-show because of the strike?

xx Jenni
phoenix-rose
Yeah, it sounds like it was between two bar confusion.

I was going to suggest erdbeer this week (b/c it's my anniversary of another year on the planet) but ... I too am kind of stranded by the strike - I can get to town after work Thurs - but then would be stranded if I were out past midnight... So, I'll just wait and see y'all a different week I guess.
globalgirl
So, for those of us with bikes and/or live in Prenzlauerberg it looks like we're trying out a new bar called "Yes".

I've never actually been it, but have been meaning to (or at least the thought was briefly there while passing it getting to or from Hairy Mary's..)

For those of you who wont be able to join us there, this is the time to check out a bar in your neighborhood that may be suitable for future suggestions venues.
glasweejen
Is prenzlauer allee the nearest s-bahn?
travelnate
Really? Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic bar. But it's also an exceptionally quiet bar, and so tremendously ill-suited to host a Thursday night drinks. And it's tiny; it'll be lucky to hold 15 or 20 people total. I'd recommend we choose somewhere big and crass, as usual.
globalgirl
well it's Wednesday already, so we do need to make a choice fairly quickly. do you mean 'quiet' as in there's not many people there, cause that's the kind of place we need. or do you mean 'quiet' as in that it's full but no one is talking..?

S-Bahnhof Prenzlauer Allee is indeed the closest. After arriving, you'd then have to walk south 4 tram stops to Knaackstr. Better yet, take a bike with you on the S-Bahn. With most monthly cards this is free after 20:00.
This is what I plan to do at least. wink.gif
travelnate
I mean 'quiet' as in 'they're not likely to appreciate a couple dozen very loud English speakers.' The bar usually has a handful of people inside (and just a few people is enough to fill the place), but the music isn't loud and the conversations aren't loud, and I think we'd be terribly out of place.

But perhaps the strike will ruin this week's drinks anyway, and so I won't be an issue anyway.
globalgirl
nothing 'ruins' Thursday night drinks, it just makes it a bit different, or postpones them for some.

This is great constructive criticism but unless someone suggests an alternative..

If the strike is still on we'll have a smaller size group anyhow, and it's been months since there was riotous table dancing (only took one broken wrist for people to learn... and I don't think that was a Thursday- was it?)
TobyG.
Why don't you go to something really central at Friedrichstraße (the station where all S-Bahn -except the circle line - meet)? Deponie No.3, Ständige Vertretung, Van Gogh or Chagall?
sunny
I can't make it this week, but just want to vouch that the "Ständige Vertretung" bar can def tolerate loud groups. Their location on the water is nice and there's that fun Kölsch Kultur thing going on.
globalgirl
so shall we move the location to this 'Ständige Vertretung' bar then? what do you people think?
globalgirl
Ok, so it's officially thursday!! Yes bar it is. If we're too many, we can always spill out into other near by bars of which there are a few.

If anyone else want to meet up at another bar that's closer to them during the strike feel free to organise something. It's Thursday, and it would be a shame to go thirsty. For those of you who are able to make the treck to Yes tonight- see you later.
Totters
So, I'm definitely in need to go out and meet some new people. Which bar has been decided on? I'm in Charlottenburg and all I really know is how to use the SBahn, I'll have to google map for specific streets. Let me know when a decision has been reached! smile.gif
MarcJ
Decision has been reached!

I'll see those of you who make it at Yes.
chrisabraham
I take it that this is the Yes Bar in question, http://www.yesberlin.de/ Here's the map information -- the web site is SUPER COOL... looks like a great place. It looks like it is a popular hang out for clones.
sunny
that is a fun website. bring your döppelganger!
chrisabraham
Sorry, here is a better map to Yes Bar
MissGem
hey!! just wondering if there will be a drinks night this thursday (20th) not too sure when the post is put up!

cheers

Gem
ScotsLassinBerlin
There will be drinks this Thursday, just waiting for a suggestion for the venue.
globalgirl
there were a handful of suggestions last week that got a bit turned around due to the transport strike. does someone want to post one of those up now that we can all get around?
ketziner
hey just wondering how popular these nights are i'm new to this site, my girlfiend is german althougth we currently live in the uk were regular visitors to berlin her family live just outside of it. were hopefully planning to move here sometime this year or early next year, so am really up for meeting some english speaking friends, we'll be there next month as it's our sons first birthday and also mine!!!
ScotsLassinBerlin
The Thirsty Thursday nights are very popular! We get anywhere from 15-40 people!
Janna
Why not ol' friendly Prenz'berg?
Check this out:

http://www.zumiroderzudir.com/

It has the typical cosiness a living room of an apartment on Warschauerstr. from the 70's. But spacious enough to accomodate 40 people...according to my estimation...
ScotsLassinBerlin
We have been there before, its not the best space to be honest.
streamline
Why not have this thursday nights drinks in the "vampire" corridor in Alexanderplatz Bahnhof? Drinks will be free if someone hassle people passing by for spare change. ;)
ScotsLassinBerlin
Thats helpful!
phoenix-rose
eh nevermind.
globalgirl
so basically what we need in a venue is a place that isn't very busy and doesn't have too many tables/chairs/odd retro cubes blocking the way so that people can chat and mingle a bit. I'll try and put my thinking cap on, but I'm sure out of the 30 or 40 people planning on attending, someone has to have an idea of where we can go..
phoenix-rose
I was going to suggest scotch & sofa or erdbeer then remembered I'm out of town... don't know if those would help.
stubbs
how about

Tomsky
61 Winstrasse

its just down from the kaisers and i think that the nearest tram stop is prenzlauerberg/knackstrasse on the M2
for Ubahn and Sbahn its kinda split between prenzlaueralle S, Eberswalder U, Senefelder U, and Alexanderplatz. but the M2 runs between Alex and Prenzlaueralle S
MissGem
Humm would anyone mind if we went to a place thats kinda close to an s or u bahn station...i am still not too familuar with the city and places to be exact so be a lot of help if it could be somewhere obvious?? Actually what about Carambar at Alexanderplatz??? Its really cool in there! (Rathausstr. 1, 10178)
MarkL
forget thursday night drinks! everyone should come to Belushi's and watch basketball with me!
travelnate
It's already late Wednesday night, and we need to make a decision, so I'm gonna call this one: Tomsky Bar, Winstrasse 61. it's a great little bar, with plenty of space for us, and they even have their own beer.

MissGem, part of the fun of Thursday nights is to check out new places -- and don't worry, Tomsky's very easy to find. Just head to Alex and take the M2 tram to Knaackstrasse, as Stubbs said. From there it's a 3-minute walk.

See you all there.
mrjohnsoda
what's the likelihood that a few people will turn up at tomsky's?
Janna

travelnate
mrjohnsoda: There'll be people at Tomsky. We get between 15 and 40 people each week. (When the BVG is running, anyway.)

Janna: Good suggestion, but we already made a decision on this, and it's going to be at Tomsky tonight. Maybe we can go to June next week?

I know it's been confusing the last few weeks, but please everyone try to keep these two simple rules in mind:

1. It's THURSDAY NIGHT drinks. If you want to choose the bar, please make your suggestion on Monday or Tuesday, not on Thursday morning. I know that sometimes we all make last-minute plans with friends, but when we're trying to organize and notify 40 people, last-minute plans just don't work. The earlier we make a decision, the better.

2. Once the bar has been chosen and the bar name is in the Topic Title, PLEASE stop suggesting new bars. You'll just confuse everyone.

If you think of a great bar and we've already chosen the location for this week, then keep your suggestion in mind, and then suggest it EARLY the following week. That way, you'll get to bring everyone to the bar you like, and everyone else will have plenty of notice to find a map and figure out how to get there.

See you all at Tomsky tonight.
Janna
Sorry Travelnate, it was decided while I was still searching for suggestions.
People didn't seem to be very enthusiastic about Tomsky BAr. I tried to help a bit.
