I was hoping to pick a place to start off my three-day birthday celebration/bender, but I'm still trying to decide on one. But I reckon I'll have it chosen by midnight when the thread resets...

We range in all ages from 18 and up, but I'd say most people are in their 20s and 30s. Of course, everyone is welcome - you should just come one week and see what you think.

I'm really not trying to be rude or flame you or anything, but you might want to stop typing with numbers...it's just a bit distracting

Nov 4 2007, 8:42 pm
Venus - text type is very common in Britain (abbreviations and numbers) and very hilarious when you get texts from older people trying to use it (but end up coming up with their own indecipherable language)
I've taught some of it in my English classes to people planning on spending some time in the UK

Nov 4 2007, 10:15 pm
Really? Ick...Everyone I've ever known can't stand it. Text messages are alright just because you have to fit so many characters in a little space but otherwise...I think it's horrible.

I've decided we should kick-off my three-day birthday celebration at:
AufsturzOranienburger Strasse 67
10117 Berlin
S1 / S2 / M1 / M6 Oranienburger Strasse
It's a great place, and there are over 100 types of beer and 40 types of whiskey.
And if anyone wants to celebrate my actual birthday, you're welcome to join us at
Hairy Mary's on Saturday night!

Sadly this Thursday and next Thursday aren't happening for me - I'll be at work. Maybe in two weeks then!

It starts at 8pm, and most people show up before 9pm. I plan to go at 8pm sharp for once. You can come any time after that (or before if you're really thirsty!)
So I guess just look at my profile pic and you'll know who to look for when you get there. See you then!

Hmm, I've tried this place several times only to find that it was totally empty save one or two regulars propping up the bar (on one occasion the free concert I'd come along to see was delayed until enough bodies had arrived).
I might be damning it with faint praise and it's a jumping place, but that wasn't the impression I got.
stubbs
Nov 14 2007, 11:25 am
thats not necessarily a bad thing though, i mean were usually 20 or more people and so if its empty well definitely have space..
globalgirl
Nov 14 2007, 12:13 pm
It's something different so I'm into giving it a go. Like Stubbs mentioned, we usually get a pretty decent turnout and there's more and more new people showing up every week so there'll be plenty of space to mingle.

I'm a manager of a bar in berlin(belushi's) we get NASN and would be interested in being a regular venue to meet for you guys . Whoever organizes this if you get in contact with me We could probably work out a deal that your group get a discount for coming to our bar. We also have the Thanksgiving games on live so that would be an option...
P.s we are prodominently English speaking bar anyway as we have a hostel as part of the business...

I can't speak for everyone (there is no one person who organises Thursday nights) but I think a big part of the fun of Thirsty Thursdays is that we regularly visit new and different places around Berlin - it's a way for all of us to discover places we wouldn't have gone otherwise. Also, we mostly meet up to talk and meet one another, so watching sports would probably just be a distraction.
Having said that, a lot of us meet up on occasion outside of Thursday nights to catch different games (we're all into different sports - I've even been to Belushi's to watch NHL playoffs), so maybe it'd make sense to just offer a 'Toytown discount' at Belushi's and see what happens?
What does everyone else think?
globalgirl
Nov 18 2007, 8:41 pm
Yeah, on days where there's certain games people want to catch there's always a debate on which of, basically, 3 venues to go to. So yeah, perhaps some sort of connection between certain game days and Toytown drinks specials would be better.
Thursday night is all about randomness. We did do a Thursday night there a while ago, and perhaps again in the future, but we usually show up un-announced and surprise unsuspecting bar owners- like last week...

This week will there be any kind of Thanksgiving theme for the Yanks...oh and a place to Watch The American Football Games???

Nov 20 2007, 8:28 am
Fantastic turnout last week with over 40 people. So the question is, where to this week folks? (I'll dig out a poorly made handy craft centerpiece to put in the middle of the table wherever this weeks venue is to create the right festive atmosphere)

Belushi's is a great place to watch NFL, NHL, MLB (Go Red Sox) and I've been there for quite a few.
www.nasn.com has a listing of their TV schedule. I believe you have to add an hour to the time listed.

Although it would be nice to have a regular place where we could have discounted drinks, I also believe the spirit of Thursday nights is to try something new. I have already been to a few places I never would have gone to had it not been for Toytown.
To offer a suggestion for Thursday:
I know of a brand new place called Odessa on the north east corner of Torstraße/Gormannstraße . It is kind of an elegant (by Berlin standards), low-key place.

being from Canada, I only know the American thanksgiving from what I've seen on TV, so it seems like a big layered dress and some sort of bonnet..

Alright. Well I am about to head there for a drink now. I'll ask the bartender if he'd be cool with a big group showing up tomorrow night. BTW- I think its called Neue Odessa...
I'm planning to dress as a sweet potato.
Or a Yam.
I haven't decided which.
