Hello Toytown Germany

My name is Nic and I just moved to Berlin with my husband, Jordan, seven days ago. We are renting an apartment in North Mitte and will both be teaching at a new Bilingual school called Phorms. We are from Toronto, Canada and excited to make friends and enjoy this beautiful city.
Hope to see some of you around.
Cheers!

Hey Everyone! I just moved to Berlin about 2 months ago. I was traveling other parts of Germany when I first arrived, but now am living in the Steglitz area. I am 18 and an american. I will be an au pair for 4 more months here. I don't know much german, but am planning on taking some courses soon. I would love to get out every once and awhile and meet new people. I love playing soccer, making friends, eating, watching movies, and just having fun.

Hello All,
I am new to Berlin just arrived a week ago. I had the pleasure of staying with a lovely lady and she already took me to one of the Thursday night meetups. So some of you have already met me. I am really excited to be in the city. I am teaching here for two years and so i will have lots of time to meet great people. I look forward to seeing you at a couple of the fun things to do in the city. Plus it is so nice to be able to understand the conversations around me smile.gif

Hello expat Berlin, I've been living here for about a month now in the Neukoelln area, absolutely love this city, everything's going smooth. Awesome apartment, awesome job, but really miss casual conversation in English, because speaking German really hurts my brain after a full day of it.

NOTE: The words "putzig" and "schmutzig" DO NOT IN ANY WAY mean the same thing... I learned that the hard way the other day... in an extremely awkward conversation.

Anyways, I'm a 20 year old guy, from Toronto, Canada; former Fine Art History student at UofT taking some time off to ... discover myself, I suppose, I still haven't figured out what it is that I'm trying to accomplish here. I just sorta stumbled upon this site by googling "Berlin" and "English" to see what happened and this site seemed like a god-send.

I hope to come out to the Thursday drinks thing next week, and yea, love anything to do with dancing, bars, soccer/football/whatever it's called over here, art galleries, shopping, cafes; whatever Berlin has to offer, I'm generally a fan of.

So, I hope to be in touch with some of you soon, and be speaking English again finally.

Rick Dkn
Hi!

I'm Rick. I just arrived today from Florida, US for three months to see how I like Berlin. Then maybe I'll stay longer or make it my second (or first?) home. We'll see what happens.

I'm an author and my primary goal these three months is to gather material for a new novel I'm writing that's going to be set here in Berlin. So really I just want to get out and meet people and experience things and have some fun. I have a couple of casual German friends I know who live here, as well as friends of friends, but I don't know anyone well. Also, my German is terrible, and I hope to improve it significantly while here.

cheers,

Rick

Hi there,

Myself and my wife have moved to Berlin from Ireland and I thought we might benefit from registering for this site. We are here a month now and starting to really settle in. I´m a writer and my wife is a designer...just thought I´d make an introduction before I make any posts on the forum..

Greetings to all...

Hi, my name is Mike, I am moving to Berlin in October (I know, wrong time of year!) with my wife and daughter. We will be living in P'berg for the next 12 months and then moving to F'hain.
I have been reading the forum for a while, it's been very helpful to see people's views on different aspects of life in Berlin. In fact, it reminds me of a similar forum that is active in the area we live in: East Dulwich in South East London.
Anyway, looking forward to joining you all (physically now as well as virtually) in the near future.
Cheers,
Mike

HI,

I just moved to Berlin about 2 weeks ago and will be here for the next year. I am 22 from Alabama and just graduated from the College of Charleston (SC) in May. I am living about 30 minutes or so outside the city in a suburb called Herzfelde. It is on the eastern side of Berlin. I am living here as an aupair and am hoping to make some friends other than children! I am up for pretty much anything. I love traveling, photography, reading, drinking, eating, being outside... basically anything. I was trying to figure out what the Thursday night drinks is all about, but am a little confused. The posts are really old, but I am probably doing something wrong. I am interested in coming though to meet some people around the area. Thanks, hope to meet some of you soon!

Hi there...my name is Carrie and I just arrived in berlin for an extended stay. im in kreuzberg at the moment (i'm from San Francisco), and am pretty lost...being horrible at directions isn't helping, nor is my limited knowledge of German. i'm actually pretty social/friendly and would love to meet up and be able to communicate...trying to teach myself german isn't too pretty either. anyway, hope to meet some of you soon!
Tibia
Hi Catherine and Carriemelissa, welcome to the forum. If you want to find the thread for Thursday night drinks, look at the top of the listing in Berlin Events and Meetups.
The top 2 threads are in a permanent section called "Important topics" and it is one of these.

Hi y'all!
My family (German husband, 12 year old son, 8 month old daughter and lab/collie dog) just moved to Berlin a month ago. I was born in Vietnam but was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. My husband and I are both working in the arts. We know a few folks here and are very eager to meet some interesting people. I speak little German and wanted to meet other English speaking moms in the area, especially around Kreuzberg.

PS - We love Berlin!

Hi everybody,

My name is Tom, and I moved to Berlin in July from the UK, originally from York but I lived in London for the last two years. I'm now living in Friedrichshain, but thinking of moving across to Charlottenberg in October. I work in Wedding in clinical research, fortunately I don't need to speak German for my job but I'm managing to pick up little bits everyday.

I'm a long time reader of this forum, so finally thought I'd better register and introduce myself.

I will definitely come along to one of the Thursday night meet-ups soon, looking forward to meeting new people there!

Cheers,

Tom
Ramon
Hi!

My name is Ramon, I am 26 years old and from the Netherlands. I just moved to Berlin a couple weeks ago, together with my girlfriend. She will do a 9 month internship here at the university and I graduated this year as a film/video editor and decided to come to Berlin for a work and life experience.

So far I haven't found a steady job yet, but I'm still looking. I don't speak very good German yet (no, Dutch and German are different languages, in spite of what many foreigners think tongue.gif).
I'm pretty much open to all sorts of work, since I need money rolleyes.gif
I really hope to meet some nice people here... it's quite difficult to find your way in a big city like Berlin when you're all new and shiny wink.gif

Cheers!

Ramon

JulieinBerlin
Hello! My name is Julie (25) and I'm from the most easterly point in North America--Newfoundland, Canada! I've recently come to Berlin with my partner as he is training here. While I'm here I'm still writing for an entertainment magazine back home, but other than that am free in the day times for exploring the city, coffees, chats, whatever! I'm finding the language barriers to be a bit overwhelming at times even though I've managed to pick up enough German so far to get what I need at markets and such. I would just love to have a conversation with another English speaker.
I'm also a high school teacher back in Canada (I took the beginning of this year off) and am active in the theatre community back home.
If anyone would like to meet for a coffee in Kreuzberg (I'm a bit nervous of getting lost yet) that would be great!
eotlarsen
Hey guys. I'm Erik. 24 yrs old. I'm Filipino-German but I grew up in the Philippines. I'm coming to Berlin to study a master program in Berlin School of Economics. I'll be arriving come October and I can't wait to get there!

If you like going/hanging out, playing basketball, watching movies, or just going around Berlin message me! I don't know anyone yet in Berlin so I'm really open to meet a lot of people to make friends with.

By the way, I would rate my German around 8/10 so I could help some of you out if ever we get to meet up ;p

See ya!

Hi - I'm Rebecca. Moved to Berlin in 2007, so been here a while, but have only just registered on Toytown. Am working at a publishing company here, and really enjoy it. Am hoping to stay in Berlin for quite some time, though short-term contracts don't make for a settled feeling.

Grew up and studied in Scotland (though was born in England - and have an English accent sad.gif ). Can speak fairly good German - though really should work on it - but do it much easier (and funnier) to converse in English. Hang out with a small group of colleagues but am always looking to meet other people. Love going to the cinema, watching rugby at Murrays and drinking/dancing. Also up for lots of other things, so get in touch if that appeals. (I'm in my mid-20s, if that makes any difference...)

Liebe Gruesse

Evenin' All!

Moved to Berlin in August 2007 from Bristol in south-west England. Lived in temporary rented accommodation near Winterfeldtplatz in Berlin-Schöneberg for a while, then found a delightful place to buy in Friedenau. Been here for nearly a year now.

Between November 2007 and May this year I undertook a training course to become a qualified Berlin tourist guide, which I now am. If you see a guy in a tour-bus in Berlin, nattering away into a microphone, it could well be me! It's a continuation of what I used to do in the UK - I'm a "Blue Badge" registered guide for south-west England, as well as a tour-manager for English-speaking tour-groups in Germany, especially on Rhine and Mosel/Moselle cruise-ships.

I only found the Toytown newsgroup/message-board this month, (following a tip from by ELTABB - the English Language Teachers Association of Berlin-Brandenburg - yes, I'm also a qualified teacher of English to foreign students) so I've been posting away without discovering this particular thread.

So, to cut a long story sort - Hello!

Hey guys,

My name is Dan, I'll be moving down to Berlin from Sweden on Tuesday this upcoming week. I'm 25, originally from Sweden though I've spent a lot of time studying and working abroad - in the US (Miami, Fl) and in Spain. Now I'm starting a business in Berlin, so I'll hopefully be around for a good while.

I know absolutely nobody in Berlin so I'd be happy to meet up with some of you guys and girls for a coffee/drink/run/work out/movie/party or just to hang out, whatever it might be - I'm up for anything!

Oh, and I've decided to learn to play tennis when I get down to Berlin, so if anyone's up for that, just let me know.

See you soon,

Dan

Hello Folks,

My name's Ryan, I'm a 25 year old dude from Oregon. My wife is German and we've got two kids, a daughter of 2 and a newborn son, we live in Lichtenberg. I'd really like to make some friends here in berlin. I love drawing, comics and such, so it would be great to meet some body who also likes to draw, maybe even collaberate on a story or something. Aside from drawing, I'm pretty into video games and movies... and I'm something of a Trekie. My wife and I don't get out much because of the little ones, so if you're like us and don't mind chillin' at home, drinking coffee, watching a movie or playing some Halo, send me a PM.

Hi, I'm Kay, I've been living in Charlottenburg for just over a week. After finishing all his studies in Cambridge, UK, my German boyfriend wanted to return to Berlin to work, and I came along with him. We live near Lietzensee and I love the area. I'm starting a 2 month intensive German course at the Goethe Institute tomorrow to improve my basic knowledge of the language. Who knows what will happen after that!!

Thanks to all the posters in this forum, it's been very helpful recently and I expect it will continue to be biggrin.gif

EDIT: sorry, forgot to add that I'm 25 years old.

I just moved to berlin and started to work for a german online dj berlin magazin. The best way to get used to a new city is the local club szene. You will meet many people from different countries. The clubszene is very gentle. After a couple of weeks i feel quiet settled.

Hi all,

I got some excellent advice a few of months back about moving from London to Berlin when I stumbled on the forum- thanks so much to all for helpful tips. Finally made it to Berlin last week, and now live in Mitte. As a re-introduction, I'm 26 & a female Londoner :-). My new job is great, and the little I know of the city is really fab, so I'm really looking forward to the future meet-ups and seeing more of Berlin!!

Hi Everyone!

My wife and I are staying in Berlin for a few months (Prenzlauerberg) and finding this website has been such a blessing. It's awesome. We are both 35 y.o., from the New England area in the US. Hopefully we'll be able to make it to some of the Thursday night meetups and see some of you... we really don't know anyone in Berlin but we are still having a blast. We like going out to small clubs for rock shows (indie mostly) and hopefully we'll make it to some clubs for electronic music... I love Ellen Allien, but I don't really have any clubwear (all we showed up with is jeans). Also, I want to find out more about the art showings around town... so much to do.

Cheers!
