Looks like easyJet will be offering direct flights from Edinburgh to Munich from April 2007. No details yet on the easyJet website, but the news story is in the Scotsman:

QUOTE
The low-fares airline will run a daily service to Germany from April 4 next year. EasyJet said that it was the first step in its expansion plans for Edinburgh in 2007, and planned to announce more new routes in the coming weeks.

yeah, back then they didn't get the slots they wanted at Munich, so they pulled the route.

rumour has it that BMI have again applied for slots at MUC for a twice daily service to EDI, and Adria Airways have apparently also applied for slots ... who knows, we could end up with more than just easyjet servicing this route!
the easyjet service to EDI will be a once daily service.

easyjet.com: NEW route from Edinburgh to Munich

QUOTE (easyJet)
easyJet, Europe's leading low-fares airline, today announced it would be bringing more low-fares to Scotland by adding a new direct European route from Edinburgh. The daily service to Munich will bring the total number of destinations served by easyJet from its Edinburgh base to nine, with an overall capacity increase of 5%.The airline expects to carry almost 100,000 passengers on this route in the first 12 months.
ostpark67
Too bad it will be too late for the 6 nations tournament. You would have thought that a direct flight between twin cities (such as Munich - Edinburgh - Bordeaux) would have been poplular and well sought after routes.
scotmum
Apparently it was announced on Friday that Easyjet will open up a new route from Edinburgh to Munich starting in April 07. Flights start at 21.99 one way incl tax and will start to book in December when the new summer schedule is published. No details of flight times until then but finally it looks like there might be a direct route home ... finally!! biggrin.gif

Sorry didnt find this thread until I had already posted it! Good news all the same

Just booked Easter too. Can imagine there will be a few TT'ers heading over on same flight.

Will have to see if Wee Mun wants to share a taxi (but my flat is obviously too far from his for him to have returned my DVD so...) but yes, it could be like a school trip, I've got Fri-Mon though.

Don't you think with flights this cheap, between us we could even stock up a 'Scottish" shop selling all our lovely local delicacies?
Mik Dickinson
Lets hope they keep it up.Previous experience has shown that airlines start this and 6 months later they stop it.Hapag Lloyd did this to Newcastle but stopped it after 6 months. Is it a direct flight by the way?
Small Town Boy
Yeah, it's direct. There were always plenty of indirect flights. Easyjet are pretty fickle and if the route doesn't make enough to justify it, then they won't hesitate to scrap it -- especially considering the high landing fees at Munich airport. That said, I think there's more than enough demand for a Bavaria-Scotland route, so hopefully this one will last.

I don't know if there would be a huge demand for deep fried Mars Bars and Haggis.
Derekbeggs
Its Official, Bookings are now being taken.

I just booked flights direct to Edinburgh today with Easyjet.

Much cheapness to be had.

Entire family of 3 there and back for 290euros biggrin.gif

I'd pay good money for a nice bit of haggis
JOB
Do you not think the money they could pull in at Oktoberfest alone could justify the flights??
NJDQ
Deep fried Mars bars and haggis ... Ohhh maan that sounds pure magic ! hehehehe
g24
Never took to deep fried mars bars!! Did you try deep fried Creme Eggs?? We are having haggis tomorrow complete with a real Turnip that I found in AEZ. Why is it so difficult to find turnips?

Square sausage anyone?
der Schotte
Just booked the flights for the Oktoberfest trip, £44 each return, plus £5 for the cc fee biggrin.gif

Hopefully they won't pull the plug on this - the last direct flight I had between EDI and MUC was with Duo. We flew home on the Tuesday, and the airline went bust on the Friday. It couldn't have been our bar tab, not on a two hour flight laugh.gif
seb
be warned - just received email from Easyjet looking for more money for taxes on these flights i booked. It thankfully only seems to be about €10 but still a pain!

You may have heard that the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, recently
announced that Air Passenger Duty (APD) - a tax implemented,
controlled and collected by the UK Government - is due to increase on
all flights departing from UK airports after 1 February 2007.

We're very sorry to tell you that unfortunately this affects your
booking with the above reference.

easyJet was one of many airlines which lobbied the Government hard not
to increase the tax on flying. Contrary to what the Chancellor said,
we do not believe that increasing APD is an effective environmental
tax and is simply a means for the Government to raise additional
revenue. However, we have no choice but to implement this tax increase
and we must collect the additional tax per departing passenger from
you...
Small Town Boy
This isn't really EasyJet's fault, but rather the incompetence of New Labour. The problem was that the rise in duty was announced in December 2006 for all flights after February 1 2007. Obviously, a lot of people had already booked and paid for travel at the old rate. But the new rate of duty applies to all passengers, regardless of when they booked their travel.

It's possibly illegal for the government to do this -- it's certainly incompetent. The sensible option would have been to apply the new duty to all bookings made after Feb. 1. But the extra revenue raised by including pre-booked travel was just too tempting. In fact, the Treasury is expected to benefit to the tune of £100m by introducing the tax in February rather than the traditional date of April.

The extra duty charges on passengers who have prebooked travel total over £100m. British Airways have chosen to absorb their £6m bill rather than go back to their customers and ask for more, but obviously the budget airlines will be seeking the monies from their passengers.

Has anyone flown this route yet? Is it still going strong? Anyone know if there is a size limit for the piece of checked baggage? I could only find a weight limit on the website... I am about to book flights for June and just wondering about getting everything I need for two adults, a toddler and an infant into three bags...especially since we will probably want to take a backpack-child-carrier which will take up one whole piece of baggage...
JOB
Hasn't started yet. Launches on the 1st of April or then abouts I think.
MonksTown
I've tried to fly to regional destinations in the UK over the years and I wish this route well.
But seeing as it is being subsidised by regional development and tourist promotion monies I wouldn't hold my breath that it will survive long term.
Wizadora
I think once you go over 20kg per person you pay for additional baggage. I hope this route lasts. I've got 2 flights booked on it already. I think it has a chance as people in Scotland really value direct flights and that alone will raise some interest. To most major cities main airport you need to go via Heathrow and it costs time and money. My company lobbied the Scottish authorities for years to get a Munich-Glasgow/Edinburgh flight and we do have significant business traffic.
zard
Well, if the route starts in April, it should make it until june at least! I have never flown EasyJet and it sounded like they were a bit strict on luggage allowances/etc. Just wondering...

No.
The Oktoberfest represents a peak for flights to Munich and some extra flights are put on.
But that can't pay for the route.

You need a steadily filled aeroplane week in, week out.
And some of the passengers need to be paying higher fares.
