Recommended clubs for alternative music

UrbanAngel
Hi,

I go to Pulverturm a bit (Fridays = goth/80s night).

Have been to Nerodom once (more like cyber/techno goth *shudders*).

Never been to Backstage or Keller though. Any good? Any other recommendations?

UrbanAngel
Malcolm Spudbury
Keller is OK. Been there a few times and the music has always been good. There's never been an overly long queue to get in and since it's an "indie" or "alternative" club they don't have a poncey dress code.

Also heard that Substanz is OK, but have never been there myself.
karambos
Substanz is just round the corner from me and I've been once or twice. It's deffo what I would call alternative/indie/punk. Like Planet X in Liverpool. (I know that last sentence won't help too many people but it's all I've got to compare to.)

They do live gigs very frequently and our fellow TT-er lguapo played there with his band The Scovilles.

I posted a very short review of it for the non-chat-forum bit of Toytown a while back. I just re-read it and it all still applies. Here's the review.

I've been in Substanz a few times; fun atmosphere, hottie-ness abounds. Sometimes though, and I don't follow the schedule, the place echoes with the sounds of crickets chirping on a lonely summer night... dunno what turns it on or off or why

The Titty Twister in the KPO or Kultfabrik or whatever the heck it's called now has 80's, 90's punk, metal and rock (or did a couple years ago anyway). Went a time or two and was pretty fun with some live music, classic anthems, a bartender that shot enormous, way-way-way-illegal flamethrower spouts just above the heads of the crowd, and most sensitively: caged women in pasties (not Cornish) dancing above it all. They have some evidence in their galleries.
Hazza
Substanz is usually good. I've always enjoyed the Backstage and the Keller too.

Unfortunately, I haven't been to any of these places recently, as the people I know just don't seem to want to go there.

But I'd definitely be up for a night out at one of them...

A few more clubs:

Alternative Nation (Grunge, Indie, Emo, Punk, Alternative), Friday nights at Keller, free entry till Midnight.

Britpop & Indie Rock at Monofaktur, Saturday nights from 21:00.

Finally, Kings 'n' Queens has several nights:
Wednesday - Indie Rock
Thursday - Hard, Heavy & Loud
Friday - Punk & Hardcore
Saturday - "Gitarrenmucke von Melodie bis Krawall" whatever that means.
Punchbear
Keller's pretty good on Fridays, never gets too crowded and it's not half as pretentious as Atomic. Friday has a nice mix of "alternative" metal and indie and punk, Saturday then is 90% indie, lot of German music(Kettcar, Wir Sind Helden, Sportfreunde, Virginia Jetzt etc..) and is a bit more crowded than Friday but still a good night out. Substanz is allround good, the odd time you get a band and a decent dj. Backstage on Saturdays is best for the summer months: cheap beergarden, 3 music areas (indie, metal and punk/good time music) and a great atmosphere. Open 'til all hours. My fave on a Saturday.

Can anyone recommend any Alternative/Goth/Rock type bars in Münich? I really miss the music!!

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the link. Anything a little smaller?
UrbanAngel
See above, admin just merged this thread Pulverturm is small. Nerodom too.
bludger
Haven't been to Flex for a while, but it seems to be still going strong.

The Schwabinger 7, while more a pub than a club, is an old favourite of mine.
UrbanAngel
Ooh thanks Bludger for the tip about Flex! I haven't heard of it before, and just went to their website and looks like my cup of tea. Here's a brief overview :

Donnerstag, 'Come to the Underground' Musik: Alternative, Rock, Punk & more

Freitag, Teenage Kicks, Alternative Sounds, Musik: Alternative, Crossover, Indie, NuMetal Punk and more

Samstag, Schlangenauge - Würfelabend, Musik:70er bis heute, Rock, Independent

actually it depends on which DJ plays that night, as other DJs who play the same nights have diff music styles.

Nice to see clubs here play NIN, Life of Agony, etc !
Ravski
Went to Titty Twister a few times. If you want something different and a bit wild then its the good place. If you dress up in black even better. The free tequila they dish out directly into your mouths is mad.

It is more extreme than your average chicky micky club with less trouble.

Hi everybody,

I am a new member to your community and also new to his city.
I have landed here last month and will be here for sometime.
Thanks to all of you for letting me into your forum.

As for parties I had gone to Living 4 in Ostbahnofon 31st. Heavily crowded but enjoyable english music.

Also I would like to ask weher all the pubs mentioned are in the Party area in Ostbahnof? It would be very nice if you guys can also add the location along with the name of the pub.
Eric the Hamster
There are 2 party areas in ostbahnof area (next to each other) one is called Kultfabrik and the other optimol is next door, they are amlost next the the Ostbahnhof station in an area the used to be an industrial complex of some sort. Head for the big orange globe in the sky!

hope this helps

[size=1]edit - sorry you wern't asking for where it was - sometimes i should read things properly before posting!

See above, admin just merged this thread Pulverturm is small. Nerodom too.

Do either of these places have websites?

Whereabouts are they located? I'd be interested mostly in Goth above the others. <ex-Goth but still love the music!>
Katrina
Hi
here's the Nerodom website. Check carefully before going as this venue is often used for fetish/S&M nights (the taxi driver told me that).
They played quite a lot of industrial/gothic techno (including Front 242 which was great for me, not so great for UA who took me, that's not her thing) when I was there at Halloween and had a great time. Very friendly crowd who certainly live the gothic lifestyle.
Here's the Pulverturm site but I've not been there personally.
Otherwise I think all the other links are up there, no?
Katrina
UrbanAngel
hEY kEBAB,
Send me a PM if you wanna go to either. I prefer Pulverturm because of the music and location (nearer to our flat), but Nerodom is prettily decorated.
Maybe we can organize a 3rd night out and ask other TTers too. Up for it Hazza and Katrina? Will lend you some of my black lipstick and jewellry this time though Katrina (and you too Hazza, if you like!)
Katrina
Yeah, go on then. Pass me the lippy, I'm certainly looking pale enough at the mo!
The lack of jewellery outed me entirely. That and my happiness at seeing a disco mirror ball
You would've laughed at me today, love. Was in Aldi to get some sports gear and bought a fabbo glam goth wig for 2,99€! It is long and black with 2 silver streaks. Gothtastic!
UrbanAngel
Oooh silver streaks, I like!
Now all you need is a lacy corset, short leather skirt, long boots and furry coat
Muhahaha I'll convert you all!
Although just to reiterate, I'm not a goth!
Hazza
Sure I'll go again.

But not this weekend - gotta work all weekend...
UrbanAngel
I fly awaaay this weekend to Amsterdam on 'business' hehe , honest guv!

Yeah, another weekend would be better.
UrbanAngel
found another goth club, once you find one, they all seem to crawl out of the shadows!

last saturday of every month

Update - Totentanz (www.trauerpower.de) no longer exists in Munich. They're having problems with the location and are looking for a new place as they can't continue in Feierwerk (Hansastr). The same organisers have similar events in Rosenheim and Kaufbeuren.

Also - Kafe Kult (Bogenhausen) seems to only be open for events annnounced in advance on their website (www.kafekult.de) and is not a cafe with normal opening hours.
Joe
Substanz gets my vote on a Friday night, the only downside is that it is really smoky.
grtho
Kings and Queens near Sendlinger Tor in errrm Feilitzstrasse I think, well it's the same street as "Porno Frieda's" anyway.
grtho
Sorry, Reisingerstrasse.
UrbanAngel
Thanks Grtho!

For those interested, here's the website- http://www.kingsandqueens-online.de/
grtho
I'm not really a rock bloke but an aquaintance of mine did some Ska DJ ing in there a couple of weeks ago. Apart from the awful metal cahirs a nice little boozer. Could be a good location for a TT night out.

Hilarious, especially the comment about Leeds 6 (where I've lived for a few years)
QueenFlea
ahh thank god for this forum and this thread. i'll be in munich all of july and i need places to go. i checked out some sites like monofaktur, keller, kultfabric, they seem fun.. whoooooo wants to go with me?

UrbanAngel wanna hang out??
hmspresident
Hi,

i'm new to this site ("long-time listener, first-time caller"), and will be spending the summer in Munich through work...

I'm looking for people to join/meet up with at these kinds of clubs, so... is anyone interested? Queenflea?
QueenFlea
ok so me and hmspresident are gonna enjoy some fine indie partying all of joo lie.

whoo else is coming??
UrbanAngel
Sure, sounds like a plan.
Although I'm not that much into indie anymore. If you like that stuff, then Atomic Café may be for you.

The hairdresser at Mad Max (www.mad-max.de) recommended Flex to me last night (see earlier mention in this thread) http://www.flex-muenchen.de/ so I wouldn't mind giving it a try, but I don't know if it's your cup of tea.
QueenFlea
so WHAT ARE you into?

i didnt mean exclusively indie by saying that. this is why i hate labels.

i meant non-mainstream.

although i definitly wanna see some local bands too.

Lets say tentatively july 7thor july 8th. we'll go someplace.

thursday night at the flex
and/or friday night at Keller?

i also really wanna go chill to some industrial but i guess that whole genre is mixed up with goths and i hate the fucking goth scene. and isnt germany supposed to be, like packed with industrial bands?? jeez. im talking stuff like early neubauten, laibach. anyone into that???
captpopular
oo oo, can I come too? I'm not huge into industrial, but this sounds like it could be pretty cool.
Wee Mun
The keller is a shit hole!!

It kicks off at silly o'clock and finishes saturday afternoon, full of tossers off their bin on E. Shite music as well!!
QueenFlea
so whats a good friday night then?

and of course YOU have to come too mister horror movie guy.
UrbanAngel
Sure, just decide when and where, and post under 'Going Out' a new thread with the details. This thread is mainly to collect addresses for 'alternative' venues.
hmspresident
Lets say tentatively july 7thor july 8th. we'll go someplace.

That's not a good weekend for me... But if you guys go and decide on the good places, and arrange another night, i'll be there!
UrbanAngel
DJ SIXX is going to be playing more often at Pulverturm, which is good news for those of us who prefer 80s to EBM (this cyber-goth malarky). He's there next week (30th Sept) and 7th Oct for Zombie Nation special event.
Nath
The "cyber-goth mularky" is at it's best in good old Germany though! Depends what you compare with what I guess. VNV nation, and Wumpscut for my money make some of the best "dark" dance music there has ever been. Even the more modern classic acts like London after Midnight are more dancy thaTake them over some of the average 80's generic tuneless goth everytime. Still the best of the 80's is still the best of the whole Genre. Eldritch Aroganz, and Bob Smith meloncholy are special and wonderful things. The best clubs play a mix. Haven't been to P-turm in ages but they always used to mix it up. That still the case? Not for the hard core goth rockers, but I always liked the club POP. Cheap, friendly and did something for the scene. Isn't the club Abbey not a million miles away from Munich? Have always heard good things of that but never visited..
UrbanAngel
Hiya Nath,

Yeah Pulverturm still mix up the different styles of music, as do Nerodom, although the latter is (imho) more focused on EBM than anything else.
I'm afraid I've neither heard of POP nor The Abbey but thanks for the tips, I'll take a peep on the 'net.

Maybe we can organise another 'Alternative Night Out' soon. Been wanting to visit Cafe Marat, Flex and Kings and Queens for a while. Oh, and I still haven't made it to Backstage yet.
UrbanAngel
A friend sent me this link; it's an article in The Guardian entitled: "I have seen the future - and it's goth".

It's hilarious!

http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1735690,00.html

Excerpt:

"We mocked their make-up and giggled over their gloom. But the goths are taking over the country. [...] It's every parent's nightmare. Their apparently well-adjusted child suddenly comes home with hair the colour of a coalface, a face whiter than anything made by Dulux, and announces, "Mummy, I'm a goth." However, according to a new study, parents of goths will probably end up boasting about their son/daughter the doctor, lawyer or bank manager."

The bit at the end about Leeds Uni especially made me laugh:

"Some took the whole thing very far. Hosein once lived in Headingley, Leeds; he remembers that students would enrol at Leeds university specifically because the town housed gothic kingpins (and his neighbours) the Sisters of Mercy."

UrbanAngel
There's a special on tonight at Pulverturm in honour of Robert Smith's birthday.

Thinkin of goin to Backstage or Keller this weekend (friday and/or saturday)...or perhaps somewhere better for alt/metal/hard-rock/80's

I have a friend from Melbourne visiting and she wants to check out some decent non-euro-dance-trash clubs for a change. So any recommendations based on personal experiences as to which night would be better suited in terms of music, crowd, etc? I have not been to Backstage before, but I have been to Keller...although that was a Thursday night, and it was for the Tool 10k days launch..so probably not a basis for comparison for how it usually is there..

Oh and...we do EXPRESSLY wish to avoid anything EMO. NO EMO!
Both places generally have free entry right? Or am I mistaken?

And on a sidenote...anyone else here have similar plans? Might be cool to meet up...
UrbanAngel
Emo can't be avoided anymore these days unfortunately. I preferred Keller to Backstage, but they're on different nights so you could go to both! Backstage has different music style rooms including a reggae beergarden, so you can mix it up how you like. Their heavy metal room is pretty heavy metal and not nu metal.
Chicago
ds, Backstage is currently running a music festival ("Free and Easy"). Lots of bands playing, mostly on the alt rock side. will definately not be a euro-dance-trash club scene.
deep_schismic
hmm sounds interesting indeed. might opt for Backstage on sat. night then...

how is Keller on a friday night? any good?
