"KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) has created the first logo that is visible from space. The construction was made by 65,000 1x1-foot tiles and covers about 2 acres. The logo was built and assembled over about a month and is located in the Nevada desert near Area 51. The article also has a short video showing the construction in time-lapse. Now the aliens know where to get their slimy food :-)"

What a complete waste of time, effort and money.

They must be desparate for customers...

Ha ha .. the comments on that site are hilarious. This reminds me of the Luxor light in Las Vegas. You can apparently see it from space and it costs $53 an hour to light up. It blinds all pilots flying near or over it, which is basically every pilot since the hotel's right next to the airport.

Talk about a waste of energy.

Could be a funny movie plot.
Future humans discover another planet with evolved life. On approach they can see a huge logo branded on the planet. Arrive and make communications with the new life forms. "So, what's this big logo thing then? Does it mean anything?"
"Oh no, it's just a type of junk food some of us eat. It's pretty bad for you."
"Cool. So, why did your people combine resources and information and construct it big enough to see from space?"
"Well, er, because we can."
"Right. And there was nothing better to do with your time or resources?"
"Couldn't think of anything, no. Hey, you want to try some fried chicken?"

"Desperate" is a good keyword, because the KFC logo isn't actually the first advert to be seen from space "Maxim" magazine did this a while back, the had a huge mag cover with "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria on it which was visible from space.

OK strictly speaking KFC has the first visible "Logo" but not the first advert

If that plant was anywhere near Mosside I'm suprised they only nicked the "K"

This is a waste, unless the international space station recently installed a KFC orbit-thru.

The real next step will be advertising in space visible from Earth.

It's not near Moss Side, but I know what you mean. There was a rumour that it was currently being hidden behind the W in the Hollywood sign or that it was going to be used as part of another sign planned to tell aliens that they were not welcome. wink.gif

I agree that it's a waste of cash etc ... but I don't really think it's for the aliens ...

Surely everyone on here has "Google earth" or checks out "Google maps" or equivalents ... we're ALL looking at the planet from space ...

Area 51 is a defaulted shortcut when you install Google Earth so the amount of people that will a) stumble across it cool.gif go looking for it (when they update that part of the globe of course!) is likely to be massive. Also they just made the record books so any company that follows suit (and I'd expect that from now on) will be treading the path of KFC ... who were there first.

Could be the cheapest piece of advertising they ever made in the long term.

Like I say, I don't agree with it - but there's a flip side to every story ...

Joke from the space race era:
"Houston, the Soviets have landed on the moon and painted it red!"
"No problem, astronaut, just paint the Coca Cola logo across it."
eurovol
Which logo is this then?
