My cousin is coming to Munich from Australia at the end of the month. She'll be in Heidelberg first and has asked me the easiest way for her to get Munich from there.

Anyone have any recommendations? cheers...

Train?

If she is driving, avoid the A6 like the plague.

Train is the best way

IC - 0 Xfers - 54 Eur - Travel Time 3h04m
RE/ICE - 1 xfer - 67 Eur - Travel Time 3h20m

train is expensive though. one way will cost her about 55€ (i travel HD-Mü every week).

And how much would it cost to rent a car? 80-100 Per day minium.
or fly - 99 Eur (If you can get a LH city ticket) or 400-500 for a standard ticket.

I think 54 Eur, is better than those options.. and if you only take slow trains or get a Schones WE ticket, the price can go down to 20-30 Eur.

55€ to travel across half of Germany? I don't consider that to be expensive.
Elfenstar
you're right. i was thinking round trip. if she/he takes the ICE from stuttgart, then add 10€ to that. the price i quoted is the IC/EC directly from Heidelberg.

I'm thinking about coming to the TT party on Dec. 9th, but it'll cost me 70€ round trip (have BC 50) from Mannheim. Not sure if it's really worth it since now I have to pay for my tickets, not my company sad.gif oh wait i am happy to have quit my job & moving in with my bf biggrin.gif

while train is certainly easier - the Mitfahrzentrale is much less expensive and potentially more interesting - essentially it's pre-arranged hitchhiking (with suggested fares). I travel back and forth between Heidelberg and Munich several times a year this way and have never had any problems.

thanks guys - she's going to take the train. Apparently they're repairing the track at Heidelberg for the next few weeks, so trains aren't stopping there. She's got to get on at the station before.

HD station is only closed from Nov 25-27

If coming via ICE, then she must goto Mannheim to catch the train.
There will be busses leaving HD for various other stations.

it's closed only on nov. 25 & 26th. they announced this on the train this morning on the way to work (i work close to Heidelberg).

there are 3 ways to get to Munich from Heidelberg: via Mannheim, Bruchsal or direct from Heidelberg. on this day, depending on when she goes, she'll either have to take a bus to Wiesloch-Walldorf to then get the train to Bruchsal (close to Karlsruhe) to catch the EC/IC or she will get the bus to Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld-Süd to get on the train to Mannheim Hbf, then get the ICE or she'll get a bus to Schwetzingen, which will get her on the IC to München.

very confusing, i know, but it will be chaos and someone will be able to help her.

yes, but you writing the 27th implies the whole day. if she got on the train at 7 a.m. on the 27th, then she would have nothing to worry about.
