Hola, hola,
Yes it's a great day for Africa. The population is however not ready for it yet. Same-sex marriages will always be looked down upon by the majority of South Africans (and I do mean of all ethnicity, not just the evil whites).

Yes, as MB pointed out, most of the population in SA, or in Africa for that matter, wouldn't tolerate gays in their midst. In fact, in some countries, Zimbabwe for example, you can expect to be beaten straight or to death, whichever comes first with the full sanctioning of the government. Besides, I think the government should be occupying themselves with more important issues than bloody same-sex marriages. Is that going to improve the economy or bring down the crime rate? Besides, I wonder what a gay guy would say if you asked him what he would rather have; a job or the right to get married?

It's easier for a politician to do something like saying yes to same-sex marriage than to tackle unemployment, AIDS and crime. It gives the impression of actually doing something for the people without really doing so. It makes it harder for outsiders to criticise the government to.
