Striezelmarkt Dresden - Germany

Germany's oldest Christmas market

The oldest Weihnachtsmarkt in Germany takes place in Dresden from 29.Nov until 24.Dec.2006 on the Altmarkt.

It will be moved to another location from next year in order to make way for a new car park, planned to return to its original location 2008.

It is a great experience here, great atmosphere and of course great gluhwein!

This year is the 572nd Streitzelmark, having started way back in 1434.

Highlights:

9/Dec: Stollenfest: where all the bakers of original Dresdener Christstollen get together and parade their 4 ton in weight of Stollen cake.

3rd advent sunday: Pyramidfest. All around the worlds largest Christmas pyramide (Guinness Book of records entry!)

Opening times:
Sun - Thu: 10am to 8pm
Fri - Sat: 10am to 9pm (however most stands will allow later drinking!)

I've been to the Striezelmarkt a few times and would highly recommend anyone who hasn't had the chance to check out Dresden yet, to make a trip to see it (but maybe not on weekends as it gets extremely crowded). It's a beautiful city and the market is also lovely. There's a Chinese restaurant at the square where they have the Strietzelmarkt, and you can go up and get some great pictures overlooking the whole market when it gets dark.

I've never made it too the Striezelmarkt, I've heard good and bad things about it, but for anyone in the Dresden area who doesn't want this (from what I've heard) overcrowded market, there's a really lovely Weihnachtsmarkt in Bautzen, I go there every year it's really nice, bautzen is on the whole am amazing town, very historical and beautiful

I was in Dresden for the Striezelmarkt two years ago on a weekend, and didn't think it was particularly crowded, compared to say, Munich Marienplatz or Nuernberg.

I loved it: it's my favorite city Christmas market.

By the way, we got a good deal at the time through the Deusche Bahn travel people, Ameropa. I don't remember the price but we had a package with round-trip train and two nights at the Dresden Hilton, right across the street from the Frauenkirche and 5 minutes' walk from the Christmas market.

Are you talking about the Christmas market in down town by the Church with the statue of Martin Luther? I think it's called the Frauenkirche. I was there last year and will be again this year.
Deccie
Nope not be the one on Martin Luther Platz. That is a small Christmas market only for the tourists who think Dresden only consists of the Frauenkirche.

It is the largs market on the ALtmarkt, between Kreuzkirche, Altmarkt Galerie and the Kulturpalast.

Is it true that there is a place in the Christmas market or near by where you go into a giant bath tub (everyones naked) and drink gluwein.
Deccie
The outdoor hottub and sauna (heated from wood) are located in the Medieval Markt. Advents Spektakel in Dresden Schloss

The 573rd Striezelmarkt opens tomrrow 28th Nov. Note the location has change from last year to Ferdinand Plazt due to the building of a underground car parkat Altmarkt. 573rd Striezelmarkt.

I imagine not everybody bothers to get out of the hot tub to go the toilets.

All in keeping with the medieval theme, vicar.

I wonder when Munich's medieval Christmas market will install a hot tub to get pissed in?
