Any ideas how I can attach this file to the thread or send via PM. Seems I can not do it with an Excel file. The list is too long to paste (twice as long as the list that is posted on page 2 of this thread).

thanks

hi there -

I have a list of the all the places that have ordered Magners in Munich.

In addition, if you happen to be at the Tollwood Festival, Magners is listed in the SZ Tent smile.gif
Keep a lookout for Magners at the Kino Open Air Konigsplatz as well...

The Magners campaign doesnt seem to be going as well as was hoped in Munich.
Heres an extract of a report from todays Irish independent paper:

QUOTE
Germans are saying nein with the steins

CRACKING the German drinks market may prove a tough challenge for C&C.
A report for the company says that the beer-loving nation is not being tempted by the apple-based tipple.

"It is far too early to draw any conclusions on overseas test markets, but initial survey results from Barcelona show it to be significantly ahead of Munich," ...

... Analysts have noted a strong link between warm sunny weather and cider consumption, so perhaps Barcelona doing better than Munich in test campaigns should surprise nobody. ...

Like it hasn't been warm here? My wife helps out in a bar in Gräfelfing which just got some. The owners didn't have a clue. WIfe whacks it on ice in a glass and then they understood. I still personaly think they should look to get it to female not male drinkers as any apple is automaticly associated here with apfelschorle and therefore non-alchohlic or female. Trying to mirror consumption habits of the UK and Irish markets without taking local preconceptions may well be the down fall.

Plus the whole advertising is pants and to be honest is more atractive to an older market nice quiet orchards - snooze - older generations do not go out to bars as much and is much more brand set with known established tastes, again especialy here in germany.
Carm
i usually drink cider at Hofbraukeller when bluedave and I aren't doing the MaiTai challenge.

Yeah, but they can bring out a version that is green, or blue, or some other stupid colour, and give it some silly name. In fact, a green version called "Magners Limes" would probably suit the yoof market.

I don't like cider, but am well sold on some nice quiet orchard (that also grows weed)

Last Sunday in Kilians I saw a poster advertising somewhere in Schwabing that sells Magners and Bulmers by the case, but I forgot to write down the details.
Next time someone is in there, could they get the info and post it? Cheers.

Marktstrasse 15, 80802 Munich (ex John's Corner Shop). No details of opening times or phone number, at least not on my leaflet, but the details that truly count: Magners 0.5 l 12-pack 28.80, Bulmers 0.5 l 12-pack 21.60. (No prices for single bottles given.) Full range of German beers, international beers (uh, guess which), "trend drinks" (your guess is as good as mine on this one) and Irish tea. Opening hours 11 am - 7 pm weekdays, Saturday 10 am - 6 pm. No phone yet.
Katrina

Trend drink = the left-over bottles of Cidona?
SleeplessInMunich
Anybody around that area want to run over and give us a report on whether its open? cool.gif

whats with all this cider over ice craze bollocks. Was back in the uk last month and everyone was drinking and harping on about how great the stuff is. Tastes like piss if you ask me, watered down piss with ice. If your gonna drink cider get the proper green cloudy stuff sold by the jerrycan.

Yeah, it is all marketing shit really.
Cider was a bit of a low class drink for kids and jakeys and the like.
They are trying to make it sexy to shift the stuff innit.
UrbanAngel
Saw this stuff advertised in Spain too.

Magners is living proof of how obedient we are as consumers. No-one drinks cider, suddenly they start advertising it, so everyone starts drinking it. Virtually none of the new wave of "cider" drinkers has gone on to try and discover real cider. Unless it's got a huge marketing campaign behind it, people aren't interested.
SleeplessInMunich
Huh, I was drinking Bulmers back in Ireland when I was 17. It was the best thing to drink in the nightclubs. The beer on tap was vile as it was only used at weekends.

Fairs fair STB, it wasn't widely available till they brought it out over here.
Small Town Boy
I was generally referring to the UK. A few people used to drink Strongbow or similar sugar-waters, but the "cider" movement only took off when Magners was introduced, with the said marketing campaign to promote it.
MonksTown
There was White Lightning and that was popular with the kids. laugh.gif

So let me get this straight: you are angry that people didn't start drinking cider before they knew about it? blink.gif
Small Town Boy
Well, I'm not angry, but I wish that people would use their own initiative a bit more. Everyone knew about cider before Magners came along, but very few ever thought about actually trying it. It wouldn't have been complicated; every supermarket sells a range of cider just next to the beer.

Even now, people drink Magners because that's the one being advertised, but very few are using Magners as a stepping stone on to real cider - you know, the stuff made with apples.
SleeplessInMunich
But isn't that what advertising is meant to do? Draw peoples attention to something and then hopefully get them to buy it.
And as for your "real cider", where are you meant to get that in Munich?

Munich and Barcelona are currently checked out as test markets for an national launch in both countries. But - at least - in Munich sales aren´t that great. Well I am not surprised at the prices some pubs ask for a bottle - up to 4,90 € for a bottle.
SleeplessInMunich
Does that mean we may go back to not being able to get it if the sales aren't good enough?
MonksTown
At the licensed premises I work at, I pushed for cider on the menu before the whole Magners thing started
and when it did we went with the Magners trend. We haven't done a huge analysis of sales yet but as far as I can see we are
selling the stuff and will continue to do so but not in huge ammounts.

It sells on the novelty and the advertising.
Most of the people drinking it would normally drink Becks, it's not pulling people off the traditional helles, let alone weißbier.

It IS expensive compared to beers, drop for drop and it is not helped by the use of a pint bottle.
A pint is larger than 500ml of course but people compare the price as like for like.

It is also not helped by the fact that a lot of the pubs that have taken it first are KNOWN for their "premium" prices.

If I were Mr Magners, I'd introduce a 500ml bottle and introduce either a price cut or recommended retail price guide
and watch the cut of the wholesalers. For internal reasons, we retail it at less margin than we normally would but it is still 20% dear than it's competitor bottled Becks.
Aussie Steve
The Outland is selling Magners Cider Pint bottles for 4.80 euro. Im pretty sure thats the cheapest In Munich. I have seen its for sale as much as 5.90 euro.

Aussie Steve
SleeplessInMunich
Actually I think the Arc sell it for €4.60
NDMunich
The Magners momentum has picked up in Munich this summer and is currently listed in over 500 accounts in the Munich area. It sold extremely well at Kino Open Air Konigsplatz and Tollwood Festival as well. So not to worry, you'll continue to be able to get Magners in Munich.

With regards to the "real apples" comment. Actually, Magners is known for their use of real apples and quality production. Most competitors use apple juice concentrate and can produce, and sell their products in 1 -2 weeks. Magners however, is made of 17 different blends of REAL apples, harvested every year in the orchards of Clonmel, Ireland. The product takes 9 - 22 months to produce. This creates a quality cider based on genuine craft and naturalness. It's the most natural cider you can get on the market.

There's a list of places to get Magners in Munich at www.magners.com/deutschland..

I hear they might be introducing their 33cl bottle soon too so Stay tuned ..
NDMunich
oh and I think I saw it at CADU for 4.20..or 4.80?

Maybe on the Munich market, but in Britain this would be nonsense. Yes, Magners is a clear and definite step up from Strongbow and the like, but it still falls a long way short of real cider.

QUOTE
Real cider is a long-established traditional drink which is produced naturally from apples and is neither carbonated or pasteurised.

In the far-off days before White Lightning, aka trampagne, took hold, there was a fabulous extra dry white cider sold in flip-top bottles in Norn Iron. Like Diamond White, but better. Really, seriously good stuff that would rival a mid-range Sekt for enjoyment value (certainly beat most of the wine selection in the offies over there). So first they put it in cans, thus altering the taste and downgrading the image. Then they took it off the market. *mourn* Compared to that, Magners and Strongbow can f* off and stay f*ed off. Not even going to mention the 2% stuff in German supermarkets *snort*
Yeti
Cider used to be the cheap and nasty way to get drunk when I were a young lad. Never drank it much as I worked in bars from an early age and could get better stuff free.

Only marketing ever needed was that it came in huge bottles and you could thus transport enough to devestate your entire group in one rucksack.

Now this polite tippling of the "divine sweat of the humble apple" or whatever? What is next? Low fat fish and chips?

Ah Yeti, you have just brought back memories of "White Lightning" cider. It was very foamy stuff, like some of that apfelschorle you get that bubbles up like fairy (No insult Monkstown) liquid washing up liquid. I remember actually spiking a friend's bottle with washing up liquid and him sitting there reflecting how great White Lightning tasted as he foamed at the mouth like a rabid dog and the rest of us howled with laughter

Did anyone else drink Diamond white / Carlsberg special brew snakebites in the eighties ?

As a kid in Devon ( 4 to 12 years old ) my granny used to give me rough cider ( Pints ! approx 6° alcohol ) and justify this by saying to my parents " dont worry its ONLY cider not scrumpy " !!!

Hessisches Aplfel Wein or Most from Oberbayern or the Mühlviertel are acceptable substitutes for hardened cider drinkers , for the truly adventurous you can try federweisse ( sturm in Austria ) - helles snakebikes !

Oh yeah my favourite nickname for cider is trampjuice !

Sorry one last thing , has anyone on the board recollections of Natch and Vimto ( preferably on a sunny day in Vivary Park ) ?
crusoe
Federweisser, ah yes, that unique pain between the eyes... now that's dangerous stuff, and so is its red counterpart, Roter Sauser (so called because of the extra turn of speed it gives you en route to the jacks if you drink too much of it). The best I ever tasted was in the grotty bar at Hallein station in Austria. Just the right balance of sweetness and acidity, and that was only the barman.

Am sorry, crusoe, shall have to find you some apple goodness forthwith as an apology and shall beat myself with bits of tree in the meantime. It's the only way.
