Bush claiming that Rummy's resignation was accepted yesterday when he (Bush) thought they were still in position to win the elections. Actually said "shows what I know".

Yes, his nomination has to get approved but A&M is about as Texas *stereotype* as it gets. Ask Clepto, Gates is the sitting head of her university.

Yeap, the normal Texans go to UT

During the Presidential elections, everyone was wearing Bush T-shirts in the colors of the University and you could buy them at the University-gear stores at the mall

I only saw one person with a blue shirt saying "vote for Kerry". I haven't seen her ever since
This university/town has a huge corps of cadets, the Bush Presidential library, Bush avenue, some Barbara Bush lane or something like that, xenophopic bars and the most scary bumper stickers around. It's definitely Bush land.
But, College Station votes Democrat (Chet Edwards, also an Aggie) mainly because students are not registered here and professors are.
edit: but of course, this says nothing about Gates.
ah clepto, texas was historically run by conservative democrats, here's a tidbit thats usually shocking to outsiders:
QUOTE
Previously, Democrats had to win Texas in order to win the presidency; no Democrat had won the White House since Texas entered the Union in 1845 without carrying the state.
that basically ended with clinton, as he was the first democrat to take the house ohne texas. texas for its part was to busy splitting its votes between homegrown bush and whats his name, ross perot.

I got an open letter/email from Gates yesterday regarding an offensive video posted on the internet, in case you care to read it (I guess its OK to post this

) I'm only posting pieces of it cause it's too long.
QUOTE
Yesterday was a sad day for Texas A&M. It was brought to my attention
that individuals who appear to be Aggie students had posted to a public
web site a home-made video that is so utterly disgusting that,
regardless of race, religion, or background, I believe virtually any
member of our Aggie family would be outraged and ashamed if they viewed
it. The content of the video is offensive on many levels and would be
so to all Aggies, but is particularly insulting and hurtful to members
of our Black community. The hateful video is not simply an example of
poor judgment and insensitivity; it appears to have been purposefully
produced to insult and demean. ...
I cannot fully express my disappointment and embarrassment that Texas
A&M students may have been involved in this matter. While I respect
and value the constitutional right to free speech, I can neither
condone nor accept that right being disrespected in this manner. ...
...
I deeply regret that anyone was hurt by viewing the video, or simply
knowing or hearing about it. At a time when Texas A&M is doing more
than ever to attract, retain and graduate a diverse student body, the
damage done by the insensitivity of two or three individuals is
immeasurable. I am extremely disappointed by their behavior, but even
more saddened by the hurt this might bring to many members of our
campus and extended communities.
Finally, I am truly outraged by this moronic video. Those who made it
are no true Aggies, and I expect they will have to live with the
consequences of their actions in this matter for a very long time.

Texas A&M University

Now Bush is speaking again especifically about this change with both Rumsfeld and Gates by his side.
dolfan
Nov 8 2006, 9:33 pm
I don't know enough about Gates to say that any real change will occur, but it is certainly indicates a changing of the guard and a White House on the run. Bush has been adament that Rumsfield will stay, through heavy handed criticism, but he has now changed course. Is this going to make Iraq a popular tourist destination in the next 6 months?? Of course not, but it signals a change in the approach Bush is taking and hopefully indicates that bush is going to listen to us a little more for the next 2 years.
Besides, Rumsfeld is a twat among twats and one less is always good.
Crawlie
Nov 8 2006, 9:46 pm
What difference will this make? Well, from a personal point of view I think it will help the inevitable co-operation between the dems and republicans with regards to national security and, especially, the war in Iraq. Rumsfeld is hated by many and the democrat majority certainly would have been very hesitant in dealing with him... Nobody was willing to trust Rumsfeld's judgement anymore

Gates had his finger in the Iran Contra scandal didn't he?
Blatantly ripped off Wiki:
QUOTE
Owing to his senior status in the CIA, Gates was close to many figures who played significant roles in the Iran-Contra Affair and was in a position to have known of their activities. The evidence developed by Independent Counsel did not warrant indictment of Gates for his Iran-Contra activities or his responses to official inquiries.
Notice the careful wording "was in a position to have known" and "evidence developed by Independent Counsel". Meaning in my opinion, "He was in it up to his neck, we just couldn't access the conclusive evidence".
