In the newly released 2006 Corruption Perceptions Index, Germany is ranked 16th least corrupt country in the world.

Clarsonimus at Observing Hermann writes:

QUOTE
German experts scrambled to explain their dismal performance by reminding the public that Gerhard Schröder's government has been out of office for almost an entire year now and that the grand coalition's "hands are tied" and it just can't be as corrupt as it would like to be.

Transparency International is a Berlin-based non-profit, non-partisan organization founded in 1993 to curb corruption in international transactions. Through its network of chapters in over 90 countries, TI encourages governments to implement effective anti-corruption laws and policies, promotes reform through international organizations and raises public awareness.

In the survey the countries Finland, Iceland, and New Zealand are perceived as being the least corrupt. The most corrupt are Iraq, Burma, and Haiti.

Out of 163 countries indexed, Australia is 9th, UK 11th, Canada 14th, Germany 16th, Ireland 18th, USA 20th, and South Africa 51st.

In the following map red-coloured countries are the most corrupt, yellow are the least corrupt, and white means "no data".

cant believe that the E.europe is more corrupt than the "BRIC" countries! why there you have to pay someone to go to the free public toilets also!!!

I can't believe UK got 11th. UK was a leader in bribery and corruption we had 35/51 companies on a list that the world bank wouldn't deal with due to bribery and corruption issues. Bad press for UK, I tell ya!
Panama
Panama is 84th. ph34r.gif

This created a lot of reaction yesterday when it was released. In places like Panama corruption at every possible level is the major responsible for poverty and unfair wealth distribution. Panama has one of the highest economic growth in Latin America, however 40% of its inhabitants live in poverty conditions. It's really a shame to see that this kind of reports are published every year and however nothing is done for taking care of the problem.

I find the title a bit odd. Is it surprising that Iraq and Haiti are more corrupt than Germany?
Panama
I also thought the same thing about the title. It seems kind of obvious to me that Germany is less corrupt than those two particular countries.

A 'leader'? Are you sure?

I'd say it was meant tongue-in-cheek.

Public toilets aren't necesarily free and you get what you pay for in eastern Europe toilet wise.

Good day for the Kiwi's, not only are we nice uncorrupted peeps, but we ranked first for natural beauty and outdoor activities in a recent UK survey.

Not only is it honest, but it's also purdy

wow, nice news..

However - New Zealand third safest in the world??? where'd they get that one? out of a travel mag?

NZ has nice scenery, and I honestly do believe the report about honesty in business dealings (not the first time NZ has ranked highly there either) - but SAFE? It is NOT.

Did the survey include the "Black Boys" and the "Mongrels"? I know, they all love their mothers and shop for their grannys on Saturday. tongue.gif

boy, I don't want to keep taking this off the topic, as it's not actually supposed to be about NZ and how wonderful godzone is, but just for the record @canaryman: I wasn't referring to the mobs when I said NZ isn't safe - they're not the ones doing most of the damage; it's the sickie individuals, and quite a few of them are white, British-background.

Anyway, back to the topic, it was supposed to be about Germany I think. rolleyes.gif

I thought you meant the volcanoes.

Yet another reason why Germany's safer. tongue.gif

"Black Boys"

I think you mean Black Power. Black Boys would be the rather un-pc term for the Maaori fellas

I cannot remember now but I saw a documentary about the two major gangs in New Zealand. On group were the "Mongrels" and I am fairly sure that the other group called themselves "The Black Boys".

It contained some holidaymakers video footage of two rival members beating each other with crow bars. Personally I would rather take video footage of my fellow skiers. laugh.gif

UK, up until 2002 I think it was when they updated their bribery and corruption laws (from 1906 - I kid you not) the maxmum fine you could receive before then was £500 for being convicted of bribery and corruption (and a slap on the wrist and being told told stand in the corner for an hour) - plus there were so many loopholes in the law it was bribery heaven over here, the governments actions to combat bribery until 2002 were basically a letter wrote by the company to promise that they wouldnt be corrupt - because corrupt people never lie.

2000/2001 I think it was, the World Bank had a list of companies that they wouldn't deal with due to bribery and corruption. Out of 51, 35 of them were British also in a memo when asked what were Britains peers for bribery and corruption. They replied with Turkey, Argentina and another one (can't remember but you get the idea - not good).

So from this survey seems Britain has really gone forward (the optimist in me) or that they aren't taking into account all the factors or are holding back information (the cynic).

The one thing that I find unsettling is the fact that there is no Government auditor here. No one seems to be looking over the books to make sure that all our transfer payments to the former DDR are in order or that all our social payments are free and clear of bribery.

Lots of corrupt deals went down in Canada the past couple of years, but at least they were brought to the public's attention by the Auditor General.

Am I living under a rock, or does such a "German" government watchdog (and I mean other than Transparency Int'l) exist?

why does that not surprise me? A man who takes a molehill and starts screaming 'The mountains are coming!'

Anyone who thinks the UK is a venal pit of corruption and bribery heaven sho take the Chunnel to Belgium and check that out. And when they have finished there, why not Italy, Romania etc etc

The UK has corruption. Just not very much on a global scale.

111th - Kazakhstan? I am sure Borat would disagree! LOL
