Does anyone know the benefits of being in the KSK? It's all a bunch of legal mumbojumbo and I just want to figure out if it's in my best interest. Any tips would be helpful!
BTW-this is my first post! wink.gif

Tough to get in, but well worth trying. My wife is in!
Mr Pasta
Does anyone happen to know what the requirements are for joining the Künstler Sozialkasse? I tried looking at their website, but it is beyond my German level..

Cheers.

there was once a thread about this where another Toytowner explained it quite clearly. Unfortuantely I could not find it through the search function above, but because I found it relevant for my work as advisor as well I copied the info and here it is:

QUOTE
Kuenstlersozialkasse really is restricted to ppl earning their money
- creatively, i.e. as visual artists, journalists, writers, photographers, directors, designers etc.
- permanently, i.e. with a view to do this for most of their working lives
- independently. To give an example, in film production, directors and D.o.P.s, video artists and film musicians qualify, while editors do not as KSK thinks they only work under the supervision of directors, not independently.

The KSK form asks non-EU residents to include a residence permit so I suppose they will consider applications from anyone who permanently resides in Germany and is an artist or journalist.
Your operating profit / net earnings need to be in excess of 4800Euros p.a.

As proof of the artistic / journalistic nature of your work, you need to supply them with
- an art or journalism school diploma
- recent contracts with clients (signed less than 12 months ago)
- invoices to clients and bank statements confirming the income (payment slips from a newspaper will also do if you are a journalist)
- current PR material advertising your work
- awards, honors received for your work
- reproductions of your work (i.e. paintings), copies of published material, printouts of websites you designed etc.
- confirmation of membership of an artists' / writers' union
- other proof - i.e. confirmation of several clients that they commission your work as an artist, journalist, writer, director etc

I can of course take no guarantee/liability for the contents of this text since it is not from me, but I am pretty sure it is straightforward. If you can get into it you will find that there is hardly a cheaper way to get full public services... unfortunately the process is supposed to take several months now
good luck

Mr Pasta
Ok, thanks!

I'm in with them as a musician/teacher. The advantages are subsidised health insurance and a nice contribution to "Rente" ... not bad at all! ;-)

I'm in it - but find them totally unhelpful. Yes, it has it's uses, if you're prepared to put up with rudeness and an accounting system which is anything but straightforward. They have complicated rules and regs and yet don't seem themselves to understand what they're all about.

Basically, you just have to guarantee (and provide proof) that what you're doing comes under their remit - i.e. artists, journalists - preferably with a letter from the employer. You have to earn a minimum €3900 a year, and your employers have to be mainly Germany-based. Every December you predict what you're going to earn the following year, and they calculate a monthly payment. You pay this - but if you earn less and tell them, they can only alter future payments - i.e. they can't backdate any credit.

Funny folk...
