So, I'm a student here for the year craving tacos. My parents sent a taco kit to me from the States - basically just tortillas and spices - but the crucial ingredient is guacamole, needing avocados. Any idea where to find these in Munich (maybe an ethnic market of some sort)? Thanks in advance.
Pirulero
got them in most (even crappy!) supermarkets at the moment...

Every grocery store has them and many have the equivalent of the Ortega/Old El Paso fixings to boot.

Dont expect quality avacodos as those in the U.S. There will be folks here who will say that an avacodo is an avacoado but dont listen to them. First of all they should not be green but black. Yet the only ones you will find here are green unless rotten and in that case dont eat them. Never the less you can still make decent tacos because real tacos dont incorporate avacados. If you want good guac I can understand this, but decent guac can be made with these israeli/lebanon avacados. Just make do with what you got. Remember the more you try to make it like home the more you will miss it. Just make it with what is available here that way when you get home and make it it will taste even better. One other thing I posted a taco recipe in the cooking thread so you really dont need a "taco kit" just some Cumin and garlic powder. Actuallly I have not answered your question in where to find avacados. The answer is in every market but do not I repeat do not compare them to home. Enjoy your time here like the beer for instance even the saurkraut because it will not be as good when you get back home. Phew ...I'm glad now that I know that my drucken ramble of the night is not on some stupid political forum. Go Cowboys ... oh wait we lost already anyways cheers!

If you want better quality ones try a posh supermarket like Kaufhof, Hertie, Karstadt or go to Viktualienmarkt.

Hit on Rosenheimer Platz had some last week, they were Bio and pretty tasty...but be prepared, they were fairly expensive for a little fruit...or is it vegetable?

From my mate wiki

QUOTE (Wikipedia)
Avocado (Persea americana) is a tree and the fruit of that tree, classified in the flowering plant family Lauraceae.
...
The pear-shaped fruit is botanically a berry or drupe, from 7 to 20 cm long, and weighs between 100 to 1000 g. It has a large central seed, 3 to 5 cm in diameter.

And don't share your guac with pets, it continues

QUOTE (Wikipedia)
Feeding avocados to any animal should be totally avoided. There is documented evidence that animals such as cattle, horses, goats, rabbits, birds, dogs, cats, and even fish [3] [4] can be severely harmed or even killed when they consume the leaves, bark or fruit. Avocados contain a toxic fatty acid derivative known as persin [5] and many animal organizations recommend total avoidance of all parts of the plant. The symptoms include gastrointestinal irriation, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart and even death. Birds seem to be particularly sensitive to this toxic compound.

You could also try buying one of them guacamole dips. There's a brand "Fuego" I believe. It's also sold on places like Hertie, Karstadt, Kaufhof and similar.
It won't be the same as the real thing. But taking into account that with those tiny, hard, bitter avocados that you get in the supermarket here you won't get close to the real thing also, at least spare yourself the hassle.

Ach, it's alright for you down in the Bright Lights. Up here we have to queue for hours just to get a loaf of bread.

Best to leave them. They're horrible, all are sour cream-based and most contain very little actual avocado.

They're bitter because they're not ripe. Keep 'em in a brown paper bag for 3-7 days and they'll ripen; they'll do so even faster if you put a banananana in there with them.

There are two main types of avocado, the Hass and the Florida. The Hass has a much rougher skin, is oilier (and therefore "richer"), and turns almost black when ripe, while the Florida is larger, smoother, and becomes dark green when ripe. Most common in the US, the Hass (not "Haas") isn't very common in the rest of the world. Both types are good for guacamole and you can almost always find avocados in season at the Viktualienmarkt.

woof.

In my experience, avocados in Germany never ripen. They just go from green to bad. You're best off just to avoid those nasty things.
