Huge storm near Munich

Did the storm hit the centre of town or was it just out here in countrybumkin land :?: One of my trees, has been torn out by the roots and is now in an adjacent field. My fence is broken and anything without an anchor is scattered around the "Dorf". The lightening was flashing outside and the lights on the inside were giving it "laldy". I thought I was at a rave.
Was this a normal storm? I know I've never seen anything like it in my 5 years here. Maybe it appeared worse than it actually was due to my location? Has anyone else been affected :?:
Scary stuff

I don't know where you've been for the last 5 years, Granny, because I've seen plenty like that while I've been here.

There was one last week - a day which will go down in history as The Day Aquatic Meringue Lost His Fridge.

Was pretty violent in Garching, but still nowt compared to the hailstones (hailROCKS) a couple of weeks back. It seemed to appear very quickly, and the sky was so so dark, but certainly did not seem strong enough to uproot a tree where we were at least.
Keydeck
Dunno if it's storm related or not, but we lost CNN yesterday. We're on cable and everything else is working fine. Just the only English language (almost) channel that I have went south. Anyone else?
Noddy
Keydeck - yes, CNN was out for us as well, and it was the only one. Maybe it was a terrorist attack smile.gif

We were in the midst of a barbeque when it started :x

Heard on the radio that a tree had crashed down across 6 lanes of the Autobahn too. I'm learning to be prepared for anything weather wise here!

I've seen plenty of storms here but this was not the same. The sky was black like an eclipse and the wind appeared to affect only one side of our garden. There were actually two trees uprooted and our fence (ranch fence) was badly damaged in several places. Solid wooden garden furniture tumbled around as though it was made from polystyrene! The north facing side of our property was mostly unaffected? I found it very strange. Maybe because I'm out in the open without the added protection of other buildings, didn't help matters.
Anyway, I've built muscle today doing all the repairs!
Showem
Granny, where I was it wasn't as severe as by you, but I certainly have seen just as severe weather in Munich. Boxing Day (Dec 26th for the Amis) a few years back, I was out with some friends in the forest near Neubiberg and we had to beat a very very hasty retreat as the trees started to fall around us! It was also strong enough to knock over the Tollwood tent. This was an actual hurricane-strength storm that took out lots of trees between here and the Atlantic coast.
Granny
I would have been too full of festive cheer to notice a storm at that time of the year, Showem. Or maybe I was home that Christmas?

Anyone else get woken up in the middle of the night last night with that storm that blew threw Toytown? Crikey! I wasn't so much IN my bed, as cowering UNDER it! ph34r.gif I thought my house was going to be torn right out of the ground. Listening to the weather reports today the winds were 150 Km/h and the storm even had a name! Storm "Gerda". I always wonder who comes up with these names. And whether the same name is used across national borders. All I know is that they choose names where the first letter goes through the alphabet. So the next storm will be something like Hurricane Hazza, I guess. wink.gif

Not really about Germany/Europe, but it tells something about the names:

our landlady left us with 8 potted palm tree type things on our balcony, each about 6ft high...

one is now deceased due to a freak spontaneous combustion incident during the summer (although forensic analysis shows it may have been a fag butt from the floor above)... but that is beside the point...

... last night there was a terrific cascade of bangs and knocks... upon investigation i found all of the trees rolling around onthe balcony in pain... i righted them all only to hear them fall over a couple of minutes later... they are still lying about now, lazy bastids...

suffice to say, that was a bloody strong breeze that blue thru this here Toytown last night...

The German Met Office names the highs, lows and storms in Germany. The UK Met office does not give names to such things as weather is much more important there wink.gif
Anyway back to Germany:
each year the German Met Office names the weather features from A-Z in order, this year highs are male and depressions are female (make your own joke up), next year it will be the other way around.
An unusual gift idea is to name a weather front for a loved one. And you can:
http://www.met.fu-berlin.de/wetterpate/
You can also bid for the first letter of an unnamed weather front on Ebay (seriously).
Bid now!
Q is up for grabs at the moment.
Anyway there has already been a Hurricane Katrina (Central/South America in August 1999) smile.gif

Who comes up with these names...I think if I were to get hit by a hurricane called stan I would laugh and stay on the beach, and if Bertha which is on for 2008 comes along my ass is going far inland. I like the Italian named hurricanes..you can say, eyyy, ima gonna getta hit by the hurricanna marco with a side of meatballs...
Hazza
Storm Hazza's will be the storm to end all storms

I vote for Hurricane Rodney: no one would take it seriously and some people would call it Hurrican Dave.

hey, never count on me for storms.

Everyone OK?

When I was down in SC, even for HUGO, it was a big deal, fortunately, they all seemed to head UP COAST now.

Hurricane advice, when you leave your home bring tons of bread, water, etc.

But when it gets tough, the important thing 0is, just leave.

Everybody OK?

No! The piece of carpetting outside the door on my balcony got blown away and when I went outside this morning my feet were really cold! sad.gif

Trees falling down, blocking 6 lanes of traffic-
Missing door mats-
Are there ever reports of tornadoes around these parts? Winds were awfuly high today. Not that faster winds mean tornadoes. I mean, I'm just curious.
"Toto, we're not in Bavaria anymore!" huh.gif

Just think of poor old me... putting satellite dishes up!!!

Not much fun sad.gif

The Ole Totem pole in my village was blown over, damn thing just snapped off at the base and broke into half a dozen pieces !! But saw surprisingly little damage elsewhere !

I knew it was windy out when the dog went scurrying down to the Kellar to hide !!
