OK, so here's the situation.
I have 7 weeks before I move into my new flat, but in the meantime I need a cheaper way of calling home than using my mobile and phone boxes.
I have used some phone cards, but they've actually been a bit of a rip off!
I am not able to install a phone line in my accommodation, and only have a german mobile, which is far too expensive to keep calling the UK on.
Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,
Bea

I know some internet cafes offer international calls. I'm not sure what the prices are, but I'd imagine it's somewhat cheaper than using a cell phone.

From a phonebox you can call using
EasyTelecom. Callrates are shown in the link. I suppose phoneboxes allow 0180x numbers.

If you have access to a landline
Billiger Telefonieren. Compares all service providers for all countries any time of the day or week. Or try
VOIP Cheap if you have broadband at work/access to broadband.
Or just call from work.

Hi,
As you have no fixed land line
You best bet for cheap mobile calls is:
www.rebtel.com I have been using it for months as I call international a lot from my mobile and reduced the bill considerably.
To a UK fixed line 2cents a minute and to a UK mobile nr 22cents a minute. Plus a 1 dollar a week fee!
It's well worthed!

Be careful with the prefixes that you get off the "Billiger Telefonieren" site though, because it's not always 100% reliable. The rate that you actually get is not always the same as what it states on the site.
Specially with the ones where it says "ohne Tarifansage" (without tarif announcement) - you don't know what rate you're being charged until you get your phone bill.

For landlines you can check
Heise online too. I've never had a case where they weren't correct with their listings.

I use a web site called www.teltarif.de.
Click on land line or mobile, which ever one you need and then the country you will be calling to.
It then tells you what is the cheapest one.Changes constantly so you will always know and there is a tarif announcement telling you what it costs per minute.Saved a fortune.

I use 1+1 and calls to UK are absolutely free, with no time limitations. Ireland is 10 cents a minute.
A bargain service.

Try registering with Sparruf.de or Sparruf.com. I use that and I've been very happy. It's only about 9 cents per minute and it's really easy to use because it's not a calling card, but a prefix number.
