Warm weather delays Sölden winter season opening

World cup ski race cancelled - 28/29.Oct.2006

The 2006/7 winter ski season was due to kick off in Sölden, Austria, with a world cup ski race this weekend. It's had to be cancelled though, due to the unusually warm autumn and the lack of snow.

Check out these photos captured from the Sölden webcam this morning. Hardly a speck of white stuff anywhere to be seen.



The glacier is still open though, kinda. As of this morning five out of ten lifts were running. If Al Gore's climate change predictions come true, however, it'll only be another few years before this glacier also disappears.

Do you think if all the glaciers in the Alps melt they'll ever find Hannibal's elephants? I must admit, I always think about this when people are talking about global warming.
