English-speakers in Hannover

Anyone here and want to meet up?

Bulli
Hello all,

I'd like to meet up with some other native English-speaking 'Foreigners' in or around Hannover, could anyone tell me what is active at the mo?

I searched on the forum and found Speakeasys & something about Jack the Rippers, are these meetings still active?

What does the Jury think about Hannover generally?

You could go to IKEA biggrin.gif

Why don't you just post on the Hannover threads directly though? : Hannover meetup - Fridays, twice a month

Hi Bulli, actually I´d also be interested to know if these meet-ups in Jack the Rippers still take place. JTK is a cellar-pub under Kröpcke in the city centre, with english beer and food. My wife is german and so are most of our friends, we´re mostly in Was Nun? in the Nordstadt, but it might be laugh to have a chat with some other english people.

Hannover´s alright, I prefer it here to Stuttgart, where I lived previously. It´s flatter (cycling) and not so hot in summer. Hannover is very green (Eilenriede, etc.,) , it gets alot of bad press, but like I say there are worse places to live.

you could also check out the Hannover Branch of the Hash House Harriers. (sorry no link for you, but just google it).
good mixture of people.
Bulli
mmm... IKEA, no thanks - I've served my time there already biggrin.gif
Funnily enough, the 'old' one just outside hannover was the one place where I always heard loads of English being spoken, never could work out why...

Been in Hannover for 4 years, nr Lister Platz, just wanted to know what kind of image it has with other expats in Germany.

Was in Lisboa for 5 years before, where I integrated well, but for some strange reason I also hung out a lot with Germans & married one. Here I have 'only' German friends (except one, but she's from Barcelona ...), but just feel that it would be fun once in a while not to be the only native English speaker around.

I guess I'll pop into JTR on a 1st or 3rd Friday & look for a Union Jack.

cant for the life of me find the details on the speakesy in Hannover anymore, anyone have it?
Edit: found it on the other hannover thread her - doh! Is this one still running?
Maybe I'll pop in there on last monday of month

Also found a Yahoo group 'Hannover4englishspeakers', see what happens there.
seems third Tuesday of month at Henry's American Bar and Restaurant.

Found http://www.hannoverhash.de/start.htm but not sure if running is for me...

I know what you mean, perhaps I´ll pop in myself. Been in germany 16 years, 7 in H. German (I think) pretty fluent, trip up on the cases occasionally. By the way, there´s an english book shop here in the Nordstadt, in the Oberstrasse, called Escape.
Bulli
Can't say that my German is fluent, it works but is very ugly & un-correct. I am basically crap at languages & it doesn't help that I am still in Portugal 3 months per year, speaking mostly equally crap portuguese. So I'd like to speak once in a while without sounding like a 4 year old for once dry.gif

I have seen that bookshop, noticed some English books in the window but didn't know it was an English bookshop - will pop in & check it out.

I had a bit of french at school - I was pretty useless. I never thought I´d one day speak a foreign language or that I´d end up in Germany. I started off in Stuttgart, which is perhaps not the best place to learn the language, because of the dialect. Then I came to Hannover and did a three year Ausbildung to become a Heilerziehungspfleger (I work with handicapped kids), which helped me a lot. Particularly with reading and writing. I had to write essays, etc.,

Yes, Escape is an english bookshop, they´re also on the Internet under: www.escapebooks.de I´ve been in there a couple of times, and the woman who runs it always gives me a discount.

Here is a link to a list of English speaking groups (from the Hannover4englishspeakers Yahoo group):

Must say at the mo I don't really need to be native speaker for Conversation with Germans, although it is a good way to meet people.

Yesterday I was at a party and heard rumours about some Aussies here in Hannover...

My God, I feel like I'm trying to contact some sort of banned underground movement- there's 500,000 in this town - surely there must be some more of us lurking around somewhere smile.gif

Maybe the hash runners or whatever they're called are the way ahead - looks a bit scarily alcoholic though, after my time in Portugal (where beer & wine were 'frighteningly cheap' as one guide book put it) I kind of did that one to death.
Carm
the regular hash runs are not that alcoholic, but big party weekends tend to be.

A couple of beers in the evening are alright, but I´m past the stage where I have to get legless. If you´d asked me fifteen years ago it might have been different. At some point I discovered I didn´t much like the after effects of drink too much. Feeling like shit in the morning really wasn´t worth it. Wine also is okay, preferably red - especially Trollinger.

There are more English speakers in H, 14 of them have been active here at one time or another. Who knows what they´re all up to?

I know of a translator in the Sudstadt (he translated the papers for our wedding), and there´s an irish bloke living in Garbsen - I haven´t heard from him for a while though, we were in Jacks a couple of times.
Bulli
Just popped into Escape Books - very friendly. Ordered a book, and the price is the same as with Amazon, but nicer to deal with a real person. She didn't offer me a discount yet though...
willum
Maybe when you get to know her better! wink.gif

Speakeasy still takes place - next meeting 27th November, 7pm, Paulaner, Thielenplatz.
