Life-size nutcracker carving

Where to see one in Munich - or elsewhere

When I lived in here as a child, my parents took one of our christmas card pictures next to a life-sized nutcracker.

All I remember is that it was outside, on a city street, and sort of set back a little into an archway in the building.

Does anyone, by some crazy chance, happen to know where this nutcracker is?? Or where I could find a life-size nutcracker in germany?

Would just be fun for the family to see my christmas card this year next to the same nutcracker!

Thanks!!
Adi
Not a definitive answer but...

Maybe it was outside the Bayerische Staatsoper when they were presenting Der Nussknacker? IF they are showing it this year, maybe they will have something similar outside or in the foyer to advertise?
Adi
Just checked..it's not on their schedule this year but...

Check this out. Maybe you can make something out of other possibilities?

Maybe it was in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany's well known Christmas town, lots of Christmas shops there, and maybe it was there.

This shop has them out at christmas time http://www.confiserie-fesl.de/
So I guess they have them now.
It's a shop in Gräfelfing, just outside of Munich

lots of towns in south saxony (erzgebirge) have them out during christmas season...

Yeah, the Erzgebirge is quite famous for them. I'm sure they have one on display at the Striezelmarkt in Dresden. Even if not, a trip to the Dresden Christmas market is well worth it just for the Stollen. Mmmm... Stollen.

You might also want to have a look at this website (in German only) for Europe's first Nutcracker Museum. Located in Neuhausen, a small town in the Erzgebirge region of Saxony, they started their collection of nutcrackers in 1966 and as of 2003 had over 4,400!

They also boast the world's largest functioning nutcracker. At 5.87 meters, it has made the Guinness Book of World Records since 1997. smile.gif

"Der weltgrößte funktionsfähige Nussknacker befindet sich direkt vor dem Nussknackermuseum. Mit einer Höhe von 5,87 m steht er seit 1997 sogar im Guinnessbuch der Rekorde. Dieser Nussknacker wurde nach dem Original des Füchtner Königs auf diese Höhe vergrößert."

Edit: It's only about 4 hours from Munich if you want to visit. And it's a beautiful area for hiking/cross country skiing/other outdoorsy stuff.

I *think* I saw one like that about 15 years ago on my first trip through Bavaria (I lived in Heidelberg then). And we were only in Munich and Garmisch, and Rothenberg od Tauber. My memory says Garmisch, but my memory is not that reliable sometimes.

This is awesome, I'm not even sure where to start!

Many thanks.

My *extremely fuzzy* memory suggests Rothenberg as well. If I remember rightly, it's a small walled town full of shops containing Christmas decorations of all shapes sizes and colours. But this was about seventeen years ago and I haven't been back since.
