Meteor stike in Siegburg near Bonn

A house is burnt to the ground

The end of the world is here, maybe.

A poor chappie in Siegburg, at the ripe age of 77 has had his house burned to the ground by a meteor or rather a bolide (meteoric fireball). The meteor struck his house and it started a fire that resulted in his house (and himself) being set on fire.

Apparently it was only 10mm in diameter, imagine your house being burned down by something that was smaller than a pea.

According to Reuters, the 10 October incendiary incident in Siegburg gutted the cottage and "badly burned the man's hands and face".

Siegburg sounds like a nice place, but don't let that fool you, here is some info on Siegburg from wikipedia:

QUOTE
Siegburg is a city within the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis (Rhine-Sieg-County) of Germany with a population of 41.232 (2004). It is located on the banks of the rivers Sieg and Agger, 10 kilometres away from the former capital Bonn and 26 kilometres away from Cologne. It is famous for its pottery, especially for the Siegburg pitchers (Siegburger Krüge).

I wonder would he be covered by insurance ? Anway ... be careful out there !

I've been to Siegburg; nice little town. Always been lucky with clothes shopping there. In fact I'm accumulating a shopping list for when I'm in that part of the world next, now that all the men's clothing stores in Munich have closed down.

This happened on October 10th. I wonder whether it could be related to the meteors that were reported as having been seen that night (and indeed photographed) on the German meteor forum.

By the way, see also the related topic: shooting star seen over Munich

Just to be a bit pedantic: German news reports say it was not his house, but only his "Gartenlaube", i.e. a small (and not exactly solidly-built) "garden cottage".

10mm = 1cm... that's about the size of a pea, non ?

More like the size of a marble. A pea is more like 5mm in diameter.
Goodness Gracious
Seems pea sizes can vary from 0.48cm to 1.0cm.
