There are some great Munich Trambahn routes out there. Take for example the #17 from
Hauptbahnhof direction Effnerplatz. You basically travel around the old Munich Perimeter - Karlstor,
Sendlinger Tor,
Isartor, then head up to the
Haus der Kunst. You see great views of churches, the Friedensengel etc. I recommend this mode of travel vice S/U-Bahn if one has the time. I´ve been travelling the underground for years through downtown Munich and realized I don´t really know the city as well as I´d like.

Isartor actually has no regular service.

Müllerstrasse.

The 25 that runs from
Gruenwald past
Rosenheimerplatz goes through the old district from Rosenheimerplatz to Max Weber platz which is also quite nice. The party trams that the MVV/MVG/Mwhatever run also look quite amusing.

I don't understand why they don't use those old trams anymore. They are way roomier than the new ones.. and way cuter.

Cuter yes. but with the low floor style trams much easier for elderly/mothers with childen to hop on/off!

I dont know if its still possible - about 9-10 years ago when I was often in Munich (working on a project with the Munich Police) whilst being driven through Munich (civilian car) one of the customer contacts pointed out a tram which he described as a "Hochzeitsstrassenbahn". Point being that one could hire a tram to go around the tracks of Munich whilst holding a party on board. Nice idea I thought...

I often still see them. I live on the 17 line in
Lehel and often see the "party - trams" on the weekend. One that I saw this summer was decorated as a disco - complete with mirror ball and a few people dancing. Sometimes they are very crowded. Ususally I see them on Maximillian strasse.

MVG still offer a special city sight seeing tram, which leaves from
Sendlinger Tor. It runs only on the weekends and some holidays. Check the MVG site for more info. or read one of the many posters they have posted in the trams about it..

A good tip for anyone who wants to see Munich by tram is to sit in the far back, with the panoramic view!
And yes, those old trams sure are cute, but they are a nightmare with a stroller. Even the new ones aren't much better, because there's so little open room on them, but they're an improvement for getting on and off.

The tram is a good way to keep the parents entertained for a day in munich. I stuck mine on the one from
Karlsplatz that goes down Maximillianstr then onto
Ostbahnhof which they loved so much they then spent the day jumping on random routes to see the city - got them down south, out to nymphenburg schloss - the lot.

Some people hate trams of course: The CSU and residents associations in Schwabing.

you can still rent a Party Tram for a few hours, we did a few years ago for the hash. Its not cheap, but a great way to get around and show people the city at the same time.

I've heared nightmare stories though about the toilet situation on those party trams.
Like after half a crate of helles you are busting but you have to go in a very tight window.

Good reason to keep your distance from the party trams -- hate to be standing outside when someone pees out the window.

I wanted to say - big ups to you and this thread Lupo. It's one of the few things I've seen on TT that makes me nostalgic for my (admittedly) short time in Munich. Very nostalgic, sadly. So thanks much!

I went on this last summer, ha! what summer?, with my teenage kids and my Mum and I have to say it was awful. They kept playing excerts from some old German comic, very loudly and the female guide, I was going to say girl guide but that didn't sound right, thought she was a comedian as well and made the most feeble jokes throughout the trip. The amount of real information given out was poor and I really cannot recommend at all.
