Festival of Lights - every October in Berlin

Funky illuminations throughout the city
Editor Bob
The Festival of Lights begins in Berlin tonight and will last for two weeks.

From 17th until the 29th of October 2006 the most famous landmarks of Berlin, including boulevards, squares, towers, historical and modern buildings will be illuminated in funky coloured lighting.

Installations can be seen at Unter den Linden, Kurfürstendamm, the TV Tower at Alexander Platz, the Radio Tower, the Brandenburger Gate, the New Kranzler buildings, the Dom Aquaree, and at many other landmarks too.

The illuminations will accompanied by number of events and activities. The first of which is the "Grand Opening Ceremony" this evening (Tuesday 17.Oct.2006) with the "kick-off light marathon" in which the TV tower will be "symbolically set alight by a magical relay wand" - whatever that means.

The festival shuttle "LightLiner" will be offering for sightseeing tours of the illuminations.

See the website for more info and photos: Festival of Lights

UPDATE: The 2007 dates are 16th to 28th October.

Cool, this was really fascintating last year. I did not realise it was on again. I thought it was a one off last year.

I will make a point of visiting some of them on Fri or Sat night.

However 14 Euro for a 2 hour trip!

Better to walk especially if the weather is clear.

Start from Alexanderplaz at the TV tower and walk up Unter den linden to the Brandenburg Gate.

I heard from a friend last night the the Friedrichstadt Palast was amazing last night with all the lights.

Totally lit up and all colours changing every 15 seconds or so. I look forward to making my own assessment.

Some good pics in hte bbc link here.

I went for a walk up & down Unter den Linden on Saturday night. My favorite was the office of the Komisches Oper, where the offices were each individually lit, flashing on and off synchronized to music...
Deccie
YEah I all saw the offices of the Kommisches Oper. It was totally amazing with the lights syncronised to music.

Really good!

I thought the dome was a bit tacky looking like a mosque but actually advertising Osram!

How does this square with energy conservation.
Deccie
methinks zero! unless it was all "green" energy used...

So thats why the TV tower is lit up... and my building

cool

Every so often the spotlights reflect off the stalk of the tower and into my living room. So far more cool than annoying. smile.gif

Living in the tower huh?

I just noticed this while I was passing through the city centre on my way home this evening and was surprised I hadn't seen anything about this sooner.

Really cool light displays. The Berliner Dom is fantastic. There was a decent website for it last year, but too tired to google for it at this time of morning.

This was cool last year, it looks like it if even bigger this year. Is the Dom lights sponsered by Osram again this year?

Is that why there have been fireworks as well? Just tonight I heard some from our apartment in Prenzlberg. Seemed to be coming from Alex, but I couldn't quite tell.

They were on the Rathausplatz. I know because it was across the street from my apartment!
