Lack of community in Berlin

English-speakers don't seem to network together

is it me or is the English speaking community very small and almost non existent in Berlin?

i praise everyone on here for their efforts but it just seems weird.. even the irish pubs fail to attract a large number of people, why is it the only thing that seems to is the berlin Pub crawl which surely must be designed to make these german folks believe that we English are stereotypical drunkards!

Serioulsy though I spent a year living in paris which had a thriving community for meet ups and socialising, am I missing something here?? are there any 20 -50 year olds living in Berlin with an English mother tounge???
Kay
I don't know if this will help at all, but here is a (partial?) list of TT members based in Berlin. It seems that many of them don't post very often, it's true. Still, you might wish to contact some of them or perhaps propose to organise a TT event. Good luck! smile.gif

I happen to know it exists. But not as organized as the Munich lot. They still use phones (not even mobiles!) to plan a night out.

Don't worry, though: Berlin is such a cool city. Sort of difficult NOT to meet people.

Go out, have fun, and you'll be fine - even if your new-found friends might turn out to be Russian, Columbian, or even German. ph34r.gif

Ive no problem meeting people its just every now and then its good to be around people from ye olde isles.. Berlin is very vibrant but it seems there could be a mniche in the market for ex pats socialising..

I'd love to meet up with more English-speaking expats as well. I've been in Berlin a couple of years, three years in Prague before that, and I do think it is harder to bond with fellow English speakers here. I think Berlin is a fairly easy city to integrate into, so it seems like a lot of the expats here don't necessarily care about making English-speaking friends. But I have found that I definitely miss having a group of expats to hang out with. So if anyone wants to get something together ...
theFonz
yeah im definatly up for that.. its more of a guys thing (not to be too stereotypical) but there is the football tonight..

I think you might be spot on there. Berlin has a far more international or cosmopolitan feel to it than Munich. When I moved to Munich I was really surprised how hard it was to make good friends with the locals. When I lived in the Rheinland, I could on one hand my English speaking friends despite working for a British company and playing in a British army based rugby team.

Not to be sterotypical, but I am an American and a girl, so I'm not so into the football (with the World Cup an exception, of course). The nice thing about drinking is it brings EVERYONE together - male and female, Brit, American and European ...

We know theFonz is willing. Is anyone else out there interested in a meetup?
theFonz
Im gonna bein the oscar Wilde tonight (probably the back room with the big screen) along with a few guys from work.. everyone is invited! my photo is on my profile so we'll be there from 6 30 ish.. either look for a group of guys in suits(we all work for mcdonalds ;o) or just ask behind the bar and they'll point u in our direction! looking forward to seeing anyone who can make it

so too does touch rugby. you don't fancy joining the Berlin touch crowd do you? They play mixed teams and there is also plenty of drinking afterwards.
wiggle
Too bad I couldn't make it to the Oscar tonight - didn't see it in time. Next time! As for touch rugby, can I just come for the drinking and forget all the running around? Lazy, lazy, lazy ...

I'm game, and yes, I agree that it's kind of odd how most aren't as organized here. blink.gif

I will go to a bar, but I don't tend to drink - so there has to be some other interesting thing to do (pool? dance? chat?) other than just sit there and 'bottoms up' all eve.

Most sports don't interest me (except if it's baseball) but I'm willing to watch the occasional game.

What about meeting at a cafe with plans to hit a OV movie? (there's nearly always some mindless action flick to be found...)

I'd love to meet up with more English speakers in Berlin, problem is I live a little outside the city (which isn't SUCH a big deal, as I live beside the S1 S-Bahn line, so I have direct connction to the city (esp. Oscar Wilde)) the main Problem is I have two children, so that makes it harder to get out to often.

Normally I'm too tired after a long days work, checking the children's homework, getting them something to eat and ready for bed, that i have no energy to face the long journey into the city (the thoughts of the long journey back home puts me off a lot too)

But I do really want to meet up with some native speakers, I miss talking English in a real converstation (as opposed to having English conversation with 2 kids...)
UrbanAngel
I find it's often fun to organise your own outings, then you have the say of when and where it takes place! smile.gif
kazzle
Yes, it is sometimes good to meet up with native speakers, especially to watch the football! (agains stereotype, I am female AND like football!). Shame didn't see this post last night...
theFonz
i was trying to excuse being stereotypical... anyway it seems there are a few of us in berlin at the moment, the ov film idea looks good but wouldnt be a little unsociable for a first outing? any other ideas? going to watch hertha berlin isnt too expensive (around 20euros) for a match and you can drink there.. or maybe something less sporty?
wiggle
Maybe we should just set up another night at the Oscar for people to get acquainted (and drink or not drink, according to their preference) and at that point organize any kinds of activities that might require more organization?
theFonz
sounds like a good idea any suggestions for a time and date?
Rhetoric
hi all,

i'd love to meet some more english people here in berlin. lets just go for drink at oscars?
wilcohawk
Bored. Anybody up for doing anything tonight?
phoenix-rose
Ok so if the movie is anti-social...

what about

go-cart racing,
laser tag,
bowling,
museum

I don't know...just trying to think of something that will be fun and keep the conversation going and allow for lots of joking around about how BAD of a (racer, laser tag shot, bowler) I am!

OK NOW WE HAVE SOME IDEAS!

Im up for any of those, do you know where we can actually do any of them in Berlin?

and shall we look at next weekend for a meet up?
destroyer
greetings all, hope you'll pardon me for butting in (i just registered today) but judging by the looks of it, it seems you guys are a fairly small group. so why not try something like a potluck dinner? smile.gif
phoenix-rose
Not a clue...

This is where those whom have been here longer than I need to pop in and take over. I"m sure they all exist, but I simply don't know where... (Other than the museums on museum island that is.)

Destroyer - good idea, but at least in my case, since I don't have a car and I live a good hour from Berlin by S bahn, bringing a "cooked dish" anywhere is a real serious pain in the A**!

dont know what the response would be but what about going to a hertha berlin match? their doing quite well this season and playing on the 22nd (next saturday) tickets are roughly 20 euros anyone interested?
kazzle
unfortunately I'm in Britain this weekend, but would definitely be interested another time...
phoenix-rose
hertha berlin match? Sorry, what sport would that be?
theFonz
football.. at the olymic stadium it could be fun to get a group of us there for a few beers and then maybe out in the evening if anyone wanted to carry on the party
phoenix-rose
football as in soccer (right) as opposed to football without the foot (american style)? (sorry, there's too many "football" topics right now!)

And I'd be game - though I don't have a clue where the olympic stadium is I'm sure I could find it!

Pubs
I am not adding any ideas to the pool, but as i have done under the topic "introduce yourself to TT", i think that i may as well do it again here, being part of the berlin community i suppose.. Have just recently moved over and am still getting a feel for my new surroundings. Hope to get more involved the longer i am here.
