I was thinking of going along to the Cinema (Stiglmaierplatz) to watch the film adaptation of the book 'The Devil Wears Prada' on Saturday, 14th October at 6pm.

Anyone else up for it? I can reserve tickets if you let me know who wants to go.

Wee Mun
What is it about? I saw the book was on the best sellers list for ages...

Is it a chick flick, thriller, what??
Showem
Oooh, I'd like to, but I think that's a bit too early for us for our afternoon plans. Sorry.
Bubble Gum
I really want to go but can't on the 14th...
sarabyrd
Haggis Junior and I are planning to see it as well, book us two tickets, please. And feel free to PM me for my cell phone # to arrange a meet-up.
Eleanor Rigby
For the record, this was one of the worst books I've had the misfortune of reading, it doesn't even qualify as an s-bahn book. I could see it making an amusing movie but do yourselves a favour and forget the book.
UrbanAngel
Link to Plot Summary on IMDB

I'd say it's a chick flick, yes. It's about a clueless young woman who gets a job in the fashion world as a top magazine editor's assistant. Themes - power plays, different working environments, pre-judging people, the balance of friends and family vs. working life, fashion.

Edit: I read the book, and whilst the writing style was poor, the story was kind of interesting. I'm looking fwd to seeing all of the nice clothes and shoes on screen biggrin.gif

Although I have a pet hate of Anne Hathaway, she's so drippy but arrogant with it.
Showem
And it's got Meryl Streep playing a well-dressed icequeen bitch. What more do you want?

ER, I agree, the book isn't so fantastic, but the movie is supposedly much better.

Yup!! Sounds like I may give this one a miss biggrin.gif
Bubble Gum
I agree, her writing style is poor, but the story was kinda fun! The costume designer was the one from SATC (I think) so the clothes should be in good hands biggrin.gif.

I'd love to go see that film too but the date is kinda bad for me. Any chance of pushing it to sunday evening instead? smile.gif
Panama
I haven't read the book, and probably wouldn't also, but I've seen the trailers and it looks quite entertaining. Not much of a deep film, but a good one for having a few laughs me thinks. I would be up for this if it goes forward.
hams
What does make it interesting despite the unsophisticated writing style, is the fact that it's based on the author's experiences working for Anna Wintour.

Sorry, I am sticking to this date and time, but feel free to post an alternative event smile.gif

... and the movie. I'm a total chick-flick lover and this movie was bor-ing. My mom fell asleep during it, and taking a picture of her was the only time my sister and I laughed during the movie.
mere
MoiLV- it was boring? hmmm... it's at the discount theater in my parents town so I'm going to go see it for $3 tonight.
Mrs Peel
The book got a bit same old, same old in the middle with the same situations happening over and over again but the film I enjoyed. Mainly because it left out some really annoying bits - like the turnstile guy - grrrr...

There are some amazing shoes in it!

Meryl is a legend!
UrbanAngel
Bubble Gum - was that a yes for you?
I'll take names for a day or two more then pick up the tickest in advance so we can all sit together and nick each other's popcorn *cackle*
Bubble Gum
No, the way it looks at the moment I can't on Sat night. But have a good time!
arshoo
You have to book BG waaaay early for sat nights UA, social butterfly that she is smile.gif

I think we can just buy the tickets there on the day since it's been on for a few days and it's a Saturday early evening showing. I'll reserve though.

Let's all meet at 5.15pm at Cinema to get the tickets (the reservation will be cancelled as of 5.30pm).

(Edited as requested).
sarabyrd
UA, can you please replace Scogs with Haggis Junior? It's not his kind of movie [/quote].
Thanks.
UrbanAngel
Oh um right. What's a haggis junior?
Warna
I am going to come along too. I reserved a ticket since I missed the reservation.

UrbanAngel
Ah, it will be nice to meet her!
@Warna - I haven't reserved yet since I'm waiting confirmation from everyone on the list that I understood they want to come correctly. I'll reserve tomorrow during the day to give everyone a chance to read this thread. You can keep your reservation though, and we can just buy the tickets together so the seating will be ok.

I saw this last week (yes, of course, illegally). Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly is compelling. Otherwise, the attempts that the director David Frankel had at getting you to empathize with Andy Sachs, the main character, were feeble. The film leaves out too much diary style method that the book did pretty well. No spoiling here.

If you want to enjoy this film:

Don't go with a guy (this is chick flick non plus ultra), and if you are already going with a guy, tell him you are sick, then...

...call your girlfriends and go. But you will need to be buzzing somehow. Alcohol would just be wrong since you are female, which would lead to yet even more trips to the loo during the film.

No, smoke weed, and then go with your girlfriends.

If you get put near a guy, mock him for being there until he leaves. If he is slow in making his exit, start using profanity and sexist epithets to the tune of "your kind just don't belong here", then enjoy the show (buying into a few weak premises which the weed will augment).

Again, Meryl Streep rules.

ps. Anne Hathaway needed a little more exposure. Like in Havoc

UrbanAngel
Wow Tomasino, a post I really liked from you! Keep it up! biggrin.gif
perdido
Saw it here on a date and yes she made us see it. I will say this Streep played a wonderfuul character but yes this is a chick flick. Then again any fella that has an opportunity to see this with UA is a lucky fella. wink.gif
Dostoyevsky
Confirmed. I'll wear my best blouse.
UrbanAngel
Ok I just reserved the tickets, we have to pick them up 45mins beforehand so let's meet just before 5.15pm and the first person can start queueing if there's a queue!

saw this last night. meryl streep was superb!

this was the first movie theatre experience i've had since coming to munich. it was delightful! i was really impressed because there were no german subtitles, yet i heard no one speaking english at all before the movie. there were a few times when someone on screen would say something that i didnt really find particularly funny, but the whole theatre started laughing! then a couple times there was something that i found hilarious, and laughed outloud appropriately, but found myself to be the *only* one laughing! haha!

oh well, it's a fun movie!
UrbanAngel
See you soon!
staceyd
Saw it on the sneak preview night a while since, definite chick flick but light and funny in some bits. Enjoy!
Dostoyevsky
I enjoyed the movie, I guess I am into chick flicks. Thanks to UA for organizing.
sarabyrd
Thank you again, UA, you did get us great seats.
IMO, the whole film/plot was predictable. Still definitely worth watching if only for the clothes size rating, "Size 0 is the new size 2". Anne Hathaway, a size 6 in the movie, is referred to as the smart, fat applicant. Delicious.
The movie itself: Meryl Streep - impeccable as expected. Ice-cold, vulnerable, dedicated, an Oscar-worthy performance. Anne Hathaway - solid job, credible but much too pliant, no frigging guts at all, said "I'm sorry" about 50 times too often. Everyone else - generally unknown but good acting, they all made great cliché roles. The business consultant: interchangeable. The gallery owner: Ambitious and brilliant. The boyfriend: Dazed but implacable. The fashion writer: Smelling the big buck and pledging his alliegance accordingly. The art designer: Wanting to break free from so many invisible bonds (question Haggis junior: "Is he supposed to be gay?" - Not answered in the movie except for one delicious. fleeting scene with a gossamer black dress, but you have to be quick.) Emily Blunt was grand, I rate her higher than AH. Snobby British snotty bitch par exellence.
BadDoggie
Lame lame lame lame lame lame lame lame lame lame lame.

So much potential and so many blown chances. The chick I watched it with felt the same way. Instant transformation, redemtion ending, it just failed on so many levels. Barely one-dimensional. Written in Hollywood by someone who's never been to NYC.

I want that hour and a half of my life back.

woof.
Dostoyevsky
You're just not ready for emo porn.
Bubble Gum
Shit. Absolute shit. Bad clothing and crammed full of more formulas than an action flick. The only good thing about the movie was this beauty:

UrbanAngel
Yeah, he was cute. Looks familiar.

Thanks for the seats, Dostyovsky! I thought the film was ok, was surprised at some of the cuts from the book they made, and at some of the other choices they made, but all in all, the main story came across. Meryl Streep was great. Anne Hathaway wasn't as bad as I thought she'd be. Nice film for the glam feel, but that's about it smile.gif Although it did get me thinking about life a little. How far is one willing to go, how many sacrifices is one willing to make, for something they think they want? etc.
BadDoggie
Holy shit! BubblyGum agrees with me! The world is truly coming to an end!

Dostoyevsky: What porn?

The guy is Adrian Grenier.

Anne Hathaway looked an awful lot like Eleanor Rigby. Especially the lips/smile.

woof.
UrbanAngel
Yeah I must recognise him from Cecil B. Demented as I haven't seen any of those other films.

I will assume that isn't meant as a compliment?
UrbanAngel
It wouldn't be for me, I think you're much prettier, and you can actually put make up on, whereas Anne Hathaway looks like she (or her make-up artist) has shovelled the stuff on.
BadDoggie

There's no way that I can respond to that without digging myself into a hole. It wasn't meant as anything, it was just an observation. Should I dig up some pictures from the gallery and stills from the film?

UA: Every woman in that film had her make-up applied with a trowel. It was an awful film on so many levels. I have Beerfest which I won't be able to watch before Wednesday night. It's awful, too, but it's meant to be. I understand from most reviewers that it's a film to be watched while drinking, preferably after having already had a few.

woof.
UrbanAngel
I liked Emily's make-up and clothes smile.gif
