Okay... agreed that if Munich doesn't have an alternative then they should either shape up (because there is an opportunity for a great local coffee shop) or accept the domination of large US corporations (I also hear folks raving about WalMart in many places, whom I detest).

Still I will say I'm a fan of SFCC (the one in Odenasplatz) for the features described above... non-smoking section, WiFi (not free), you can chill for a few hours no prob, nice decor, prosecco. However, you pay for the atmosphere - only bummer. If they cut the prices by like 30-40% it'd be my spot.

SFCC ... non-smoking section
Really? Which part of it? I've been there, and people were smoking everywhere in it, as I recall. Maybe they changed it and I should give it another try. Supposedly, I used to be vaguely acquainted with the guy who brought SFCC to Germany, or so I heard from a mutual friend. Been meaning to look him up and give him a piece of my mind.

Hold onto your Frappucino...This just in. Starbucks will open their Munich store on November 14th.

sez hoo?

As I said before, I'm not a huge fan, but I'll certainly stop by for a mocha coconut frappacino and an espresso brownie!

Just curious ... what's so wonderful about Starbucks?

... question from an Aussie who's yet to have a "starbuck experience" ...
profundo
Previous thread about there already being a starbucks in Munich.

You can get all those flavors/types/sizes/treats at this place near Marienplatz.
Smoking allowed in this one though.

Many topics in this thread are touched in that one as well.

To all those atheiests out there, Starbucks coming to old München proves that there is a God! Strawberry and Cream frappuccinos, rhumba frappuccino, grande macchiato, cute tins of after coffee mints...oh heck, my drool is stuffing up my keyboard...
Kza
Hey you really are an Aucklander!
K1w1
yup, and if you walk up Queen Street there's one one almost every corner...downtown shopping centre, Victoria St West, Soundz, Wellesley Street...mmm, can hear the milk being froffed from 10, 000 km's away...surely you have them south of bombay???
Kza
Hmmm, do we south of the bombay want to wake up to the sound of Starbucks frothing their milk? Or the beautiful song of the tui?

Its a tough one that cuz a tough one indeed (But doesnt he look so happy sitting their on his kowhai?)

I dont know if we have Starbucks or not down there (I doubt theres one in Geraldine), I probably walked past it without realising it was something special. I think Muffin Break coffee is better.

Nothing!

If you order an Espresso there, it is bitter crap. This shows you what the taste of the underlying coffee is. They also serve it in a paper cup of all things (well they did last time I was in NY). They then market this menu of all sorts of "flavoured" coffees.

It comes from America, the land of the weak, brewed, bottomless cup of coffee. It is a big hit with the British too, whose idea of coffee is instant coffee. Because it is stronger than the norm in these countries, it is considered to be real coffee. If I were you I would recommend bypassing it and going to one of those small Italian coffee bars that sell Illy or Segafredo, that you find all over Munich.

PS. Regarding bottomless cups of coffee: Although they sell crap coffee, I absolutely love the atmosphere of some of the breakfast diners in the States.

If you want a nice cup of coffee, don't go to Starbucks. The plain old coffee and espresso is much better this side of the pond. But if you want a nice fluffy 'coffee drink', it's great for that - and for comfy couches. I can't say it enough. Mocha coconut frappacino. Espresso brownie.

@bludger

What coffee shops DON'T serve their coffee-to-go in paper cups? What do you want, styrofoam?
bludger
It wasn't coffee to go. I sat down and drank it there, but they still didn't have cups. Maybe it was because it was in the business district in downtown Manhattan where everything in life is "to go".
interplanetjanet
Yeah, that's probably the case. I've been to several Starbucks with my sister and her husband (they're such addicts they call it the crackhouse), and normally they serve it in big Starbucks mugs.
