KarstadtQuelle is one of the most mismanaged companies in this country. And a testimony of its inability to change.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I think that you are absolutely spot on there. I mean just take Starbucks as an example. Where in Germany are there lots of relatively wealthy young people and many tourists = potential Starbucks customers?

Answer: Munich

But where does Starbucks open first?

Answer: Okay Berlin, Franfurt, Koln are okay I guess, but look at some of the other locations Essen, Osnabruck, Freiburg etc. all opened long before the one in Munich. This gave SFC and Coffee Fellows the time to establish themselves here.
I think this shows how crap the management at Karstadt Quelle is. No wonder that they are going bust.

Plus the one they opened here doesn't have any of that cosy Starbucks feeling that they normally have.

Although that is not the reason why Karstadt is going down the drain (Starbucks is just pennies compared with their problems in their retailing branches) you are absolutely right.

I dont understand in any way why they have waiting so long to enter Munich. This place is crawling with coffee shops, with some already having established a good brand name such as SFCC and Coffee Fellows. And Starbucks is not as known in Germany as in the States, so there is no banked in brand awareness.

the one they opened here doesn't have any of that cosy Starbucks feeling that they normally have.
I need to check that out soon. Normally that is what makes an S so great...

just read today that SFCC is opening another branch right across the street from Starbucks (source is the SDZ, but I have no other info). Opening, sometime in December. Apparently neither one knew of the other. Great, now we're inundated with coffee-shop clones on Leos str. sort of fits the street though.
They also (SDZ) put a coffe price comparison up. Apparantly Starbucks has the most expensive small cafe latte. Coffee Fellows wins!

I actually went to Starbucks last week, so I thought I'd add my assessment.

Someone else said that it lacks the usual cozy feeling. I have to agree with this, and the obvious explanation is that the location is just to small. Normally, they have a lot of space for plenty of comfy sofa and armchair arrangements. Here they don't have as much space, and there's only two seating arrangements with sofas. I'm sure they'll always be occupied. The rest are tables and chairs.

Usually, I order a foo-foo drink, like a frappacino, but since it was cold I ordered the coffee of the day. I don't know what the coffee was, but it was fantastisch! Yummy, yummy. On the other hand, I ordered an espresso brownie, and it tasted like it was made a couple days before. I was quite disappointed in receiving a stale brownie.

If Starbucks is on 56 Leopold str., at least now I know where the socio-centroid of Munich is (where people with mone and leisure time are most likely to hang out).

Anybody know of a web that plots all the coffee-shops in Munchen on a map?
