Where to eat and drink in Stockholm

Bar and restaurant recommendations

I am going to Stockholm for the weekend of October 20-22. I know some of you have lived there or at least know the area pretty well. If you have any recommendations for good restaurants (seafood would be the draw I assume) and pubs/bars please share.

If anyone is going to there that weekend, I will be travelling solo, so any company would be welcome.

The Ice Bar- everything is made of ice, even the glasses. I am so jealous, I want to go back.

Also, if you had 1.5 days there, what would you do?

They may not still do it, but there used to be a special card you could buy, called the Stockholm Card would you believe, that entitles you to various discounts to travel, museums etc. Worth getting because you can go on the boat tours around the islands, there are a lot of them in Stockholm, and all sorts of other stuff for a reasonable price and lets face it cheap is not a phrase one normally associates with Sweden, great place as it is.

- If you're missing your Weissbier, visit Wirströms Pub on Stora Nygatan (T-Bana Gamla Stan). They have Franziskaner on tap. They have quite a range of other beers too.

- If you're into movie/film history, go and have a look round the Filmstaden in Råsunda (T-Bana Näckrosen).

- If you're pressed for time but still want to go on a boat tour, have a look at the speedboat tours operated by RIB Sightseeing. 1.5 hours to do a tour that takes 4+ hours on the other boats. (T-Bana Kungsträdgården).

Sodermalm is an up and coming area, getting more trendy each year with good bars and resturants (Around Medborgplatsen T-Bana station). I like this area as although it is popular, it is still down to earth and friendly and you can get good value for money. Well, as good as is possible in Stockholm!

Ice-Bar is a must to goto as it is great fun, but like most things in Stockholm expensive! But visit it once and enjoy it.

Storaplan is the very trendy area where all the nice expensive restaurants and bars are. (Around Ostermalmstorg T-Bana, exit Birger Jarlsgatan). But it is more expensive than other areas.

Gamla Stan is the old town with lost of character and chalm. Quite a few restaurants, but not so many bars. But some of the restaurants here tend to be a bit touristly, i.e. not value for money.

And make sure you go to the Vasa Museum. It might not sound interesting to all people but it is really amazing to see the ship and the life around it.

Unless you go to Stockholm on a business trip, it is way overpriced. I spent a few extra days in Stockholm in May. Here is my take:

The ice bar is a joke. A tourist trap, and way overpriced. I was invited to the ice bar in Amsterdam and found it to be a joke. When I saw the prices, I decided not to do this nonsense at my expense.

I paid 24 Euro for 2 slices of smorgasbord. Insane. www.nybroe.se

Stockholm itself is very nice, but not worth the money. In October it may be grey and cold already.

Yep, it's very expensive. Minimum 5 euros for a beer.

Anyway, a couple more places that might be worth a look:

- Mosebacke is a bar/restaurant at the top of a hill with a nice big outside terrace. Pretty expensive, but the steak is good. T-Bana Slussen and then either walk up the hill or take the Katarina lift.

- For concerts and club nights check out Debaser. There are 2 of them, one at Slussen and one at Medborgarplatsen.
