Myself, Jimbo & Drivinwest decided that we have to have a BNO next week.

So here's the plan of attack

Start of at either Sausalitos on Turkenstr as the GNO will be at the other one in Marienplatz.

or

Chinese at Man Fat on Barerstr (Sorry couldnt find a link) - Jimbo's been here and thinks the food is good.

Start at 19.30 and then move on elsewhere or join the GNO at Atomic Cafe. We can decide that on the night.

Stick your name down here (and put down where you would prefer to eat) and we will book the tables this Friday.
Jimbo
Well, I'm up for it - as a preference of where to eat I think Sausalitos just about edges it as there's more of a party atmosphere. Prices will be about the same...
Shaggy
I'm up for that... put me down for a hangover.
gus1933gus
More than likely be up for that. Atomic Café is great, good music etc, however if we are to get in we will have to make some kind of a plan. ph34r.gif
Shaggy
is there no way to get a guest list going at Atomic Cafe?
VDB
of course I'll be there. But if we want to join the GNO we should do this before going to the Atomic cafe, doubt we'll get in otherwise.
Kza
What sort of a place is this Atomic Cafe? Do they turn away large groups of guys for example?? Wheres the logic there? Everyone knows that guys drink more (i.e. spend more money), especially in large groups. Most places would be rubbing their hands with glee to see such a fine group of thirsty TTers turn up, so why not go where we would be appreciated?
Jimbo
Big groups of drunken expat men = violence. For all the tea in China I don't think many clubs want to encourage that.
Shaggy
apart from threat of lager louts, they basically want to keep a good male/female ratio. It's also not that big a place.

If this is to be the place, I'll contact them in advance to see if we can get a guest list going for circa 30-40 people
Jimbo
SK04 - think that would be a great idea mate - would be nice to have guaranteed entrance, tho Photojenny points out that you must look a bit 'Indy' to get in...
Shaggy
warned in advance of dress code I reckon most TTers would be ok with trainers and T shirt (if they can resist soccer shirts)

...would probably pass..

will post the AC response 2moro
Foxy
Indie look...oooh so sexy! Definitely the preferred look, so this place sounds fab. Jimbo get yer indie gear oot tongue.gif
Hazza
I'm worried about eating at a place called: 'Man Fat'...
bareftbeachbum
Why are ppl here and also on the GNO thread talking about trying to dress indie?!!! you either are or you arent! sry its a huge pet peeve of mine
Shaggy
@bareftbeachbum

oi youngster... while we might not be hardcore indie like you, we like the place and music.. behave.
Kza
Actually, its how you are on the inside, dressing "indie" is superficial bullshit, whether you are "naturally indie" or not.

In fact I find people are either one or the other, dressing indie and being indie are mutually exclusive. Whatever "indie" means.

Having said all that, I just wear what me mum buys me.

well said kza
Jimbo
Tell the above to the door staff of Atomic Cafe and see how far it gets you...
tench
Indie eh? I'll be wearing my tie-dyed Neds Atomic Dustbin long sleeved t-shirt, army surplus combat trousers and german para boots then..

Not wishing to be a pessimist but to get 30-40 expat blokes on the guestlist in that place is a tall order..
MatchNL
Can someone please explain to me what the HELL is Indie?
Kza
Theres heaps of places in munich that arent so pretentious, just get out into the suburbs a bit, head for the "pils pubs" and things with stübl in the name. I havent been to this Atomic Cafe so I arent passing judgement, but from the description given here it sounds more like a fashion show. I will probably try and get in but if I dont I will come back here and rant and rave about it and call for a boycott of such places in the future biggrin.gif If "indie" means what I think it does, then any real indie place would let people in whatever they look like. After all isnt it all about doing your own thing and not trying to conform to some clubs idea of coolness?
gus1933gus
Wooooooow Maaaaannnnn
bareftbeachbum
@matchNL its a lifestyle, an attitude, its a set of ideals, its varies from person to person ..cant define it sry
hey but if it helps if you know who husker du is smile.gif

Did I miss something ?!? blink.gif
Shaggy
@Kza.

Good points... but Atomic is central and a great scene. I see you are in Rosenheim.. but like many clubs in Munich

like recent examples, it can be hard to get in.

I'm happy to trade a shirt for a t-shirt if it helps... no different than putting on shirt for a Restaurant.
ellewood
i think it comes from 'independant' and is supposed to signify your non-conformity to commercialism and mass-market choices in terms of your music tastes. the way you dress is supposed to reflect that, too. so no names on your clothes, no following the season's trends or styling your hair like gwyneth paltrow ... the funny thing is, especially when u think of the indie scene of the late 80s and early 90s in Britain, being 'indie' became mass market itself and not very independant at all.
Kza
So theoretically, we just have to dress however WE want, and Atomic Cafe should let us in, thats cool then...

Hilarious, Indie is so commercial that if you don’t dress like one (clearly identifiable and big time conformity) you wont get in.
VDB
i don't the dress code in will be the big problem here, as far I've experienced there more keen here in Munich in getting a good male/female ratio.

and indie is not really as big overhere as it 's in England. If you would ask the average German youth I don't think they can really give you an example how to dress if it should be 'indie'
bareftbeachbum
hmm if we all get now that who you are is deeper than the clothes, and often different than them..this discussion should be put to rest. have fun at atomic, dressed as yourselves or whatever is easiest to get in with rolleyes.gif
MatchNL
Oh well...

I dress up that way sometimes... depends on the friends im with.

In america we call it for what it is... Goth, Punk, Sk8tr, etc...

But yea, my friends and i are the artsy type, so i know what u mean

But I'm sure the avarage Atomic customer could!

BTW regardless of the whole indie or not indie discussion there is a band playing in Atomic on Fri 23rd ('Software')- usually this makes it even more difficult to get in unless you're there when the band starts playing or you come very late...

@SK04: don't think that there's a chance to get on the guest list - especially not with the gig on

After all this animated discussions, it looks like we may have to change venue..
ellewood
@ gus1933gus

yes, i know. i love atomic cafe because it's different to anything else in munich and the music is great (esp. fridays). but if you don't look like jarvis cocker, it's not gonna be easy. funny, all the people there look like british students from the late 80s. floppy fringes galore!

get yourself an orange and black squared shirt from a second hand shop im Tal. go early. don't present yourself as a big bunch of boys;3 girls for every two boys and u should be okay.
Jimbo
Aghhh...same discussion, two threads...
VDB
yep I was thinking the same, very annoying to read, especially since some posts are in both treads
Kza
Lets find the uncoolest, untrendiest, most unfashionable place, where all the uncool, untrendy, unfashionable people like me hang out. That way normal people can have a good time without feeling self conscious, and I am sure the elites dont want us around anyway. Upsides: drinks will probably be cheaper, and there wont be any bouncers or dress code.
Jimbo
Günthers then?
VDB
or a return to Alabamahalle ph34r.gif
Keydeck
Hmmm, I could probably muster up a turban but the rest of the kit would be a bit tricky. Maybe a modified sheet would do the trick.

In all seriousness though I'd love to be able to join up for this. I do like a good Boys Night Out, turbans or not.
profundo
If it is going to be Man-Fat with turbans I could make the call seeing as how it is a block from me I go there often for take away. Mr. Wing Young and his wife are nice people even if the background music can be corny at times.
I swear I've heard the closing theme to The Incredible Hulk in there twice now.

Don't know the best seats to ask for at Sausilitos (or anywhere else with turbans) so can someone else ask if that's the choice?

Indy? What if I want to go Han Solo?

Seriously. Last Friday was proof positive that 25 guys and girls in any craphole will be a good time, and very little will stop me from getting excessively drunk.

Alas, Atomic Cafe (though I haven't been) seems like an anomoly in Munich, and as such, I'm tempted to try it. From the Toytown review:

QUOTE
Guy at door is definitely a dick. But it should not be a problem getting in before 22.30.
Posted by: Anonymous at April 17, 2004 08:08 PM

So let's just make sure the boys and girls meet in Marienplatz at 10, we mix up the genders, and go in. Aight?

Anyway, I'm not gonna make it to dinner, but I will meet you guys later at Atomic Cafe or other.
DrivinWest
From the Urban Dictionary:

Indie

The term: Short for independent rock. In terms of music it would be independent of major labels/mainstream stuff.

History: grew out from 60s garage, 70s punk, and 80s post punk it started in the mid 80s as alternative/college radio music. Once nirvana hit big the alternative genre split: the popular side was just alternative(Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, No Doubt, etc.) and the other half that wasn't mainstream (by choice or not) became indie rock (Pavement, Sebadoh, Built To Spill, etc).

Some bands have signed to major labels but are still considered indie (Modest Mouse, etc.). Go figure.

Sound: In the begining indie sounded like alternative (because it was) but it grew more experimental and weird. In Britain indie has more of a typical sound like Radiohead, Muse, etc. rather than a definition based on 'the scene.'

The scene: if you really think all indie kids do is try to be cooler than other people then... well.. you're mostly right. The main point is, don't take the scene and the whole hipster attitude seriously. No one does. And if you do, well, then I'm cooler than you.
VDB
still don't like the Atomic cafe option. It's a great place and it would for sure result in a great nigth out. But I still have vivid memories of a very cold December night that we walked 15 minutes or so from Bondi to Atomic cafe with a large TT crowd only to get turned away mad.gif .
Jimbo
Ah yes, but that was because they were full - we never actually even got to the front of the queue (it was 1 in, 1 out). However, if a band is on I'm not sure that that's the right venue to be honest - Atomic Cafe may be suited to smaller nights out IMHO. I don't much mind, but I'd say 4004 is a good choice, but Bubbles has mentioned Nachtwerk...hell, I'm easy. There's still a chance that I won't make it at all so don't let me sway you!
VDB
Nachtwerk sounds fine, it's a little in the 4004 and NaGa category so we're sure to have a good time there
meckle
I've only been in Atomic Cafe once - but I thought it was great.

Indie smindie...its just like walking onto the set of an Austin Powers film to me (maybe it was 60's night or seomthing). Coolest club I've been to in Munich. People just dancing having a laugh and none of the pretentious - I'm so good-looking types - that you tend to find in a lot of Munich clubs.

So its gets my vote - my one concern is that we would fill it up ourselves - and though it would still be a good night - it wouldn't be atomic cafe, but TT cafe !!! As I leave on the 28th I guess this will also be my going away night and Atomic would be great !!

Hey my memory is a bit fuzzy here - but I seem to remember in the mid to late -90's that indie could also mean certain dance music - this was when all you could hear was dance music and guitars were considered out of date (the fools!!!) What was the way people use to dance with their hands back then - big box, small box...something else...

ugh...shudder...

Edit: @VBD below
Well there was some discussion about indie an d some don't knwo the type of place it is so I was conrtibuting to that.

What ever happened to the idea of getting on the guest list ??
VDB
@meckle - The discussion is not about if people like the Atomic cafe or not, most of us who have been there will like the place, and so do I. The question is if it's wise to go there if there is a high likelihood we'll never get in.
ellewood
i think you will get in if you go early (when the band is starting to play). it's still fairly empty then but more expensive (u pay to see the band). and split up. 2 blokes for every girl and go to the door in drips and drabs, not en masse.

the atmosphere is great. decor really funky. not chic whatsoever and anything goes. people bopping all over the place. like other people mentioned, it has got something of the 60s porno club style though biggrin.gif
