Playing rugby in the Hamburg area

Right. I've started a thread so that irishrover will respond and give a bit more background info for anyone wanting to play or watch rugby in Hamburg.

I know this much:

Hamburg has three rugby clubs; FC St. Pauli Rugby, Hamburg Exiles and Hamburg RFC.

Over to irishrover for more info...

St Pauli and Hamburger RC both have teams in the Second Bundesliga Nord, which is a better standard by far (usually) than the regional leagues. (This is certainly the case for the Second Bundesliga Süd and the Bayern Liga)

Exiles first team play in the regional league, so too do the second teams of St.Pauli and Hamburger RC.

If you wish to play rugby of a better standard and are willing to compete for a place in the first team, then your choice will be limited to the 2 teams in the Second Bundesliga.

If you prefer not to travel so much for your rugby and are less worried about the standard of play, then your choice will be based on other factors which people with more knowledge of the individual clubs could answer.

well I play for Hamburger RFC and what a delightful bunch they are. However we are looking for some players for next season which starts next March 2007. Training starts End Jan depending on weather of course and all are welcome who may be interested.

So get those old shorts out and get involved on a community level in Germany

This is a bit random I know but I am moving to Luneburg next year and would love to take up playing rugby again (I gave it up when I was younger). I ws wondering whether anyone knew if there was any clubs local to the Luneburg or Hamburg area.

This is a total long shot but I'm Welsh...what can I say! :-)

Wow - I didn't expect so many replies to a rugby thread! Cool...

I'll probably try to hook up with one of the clubs you guys have mentioned - I haven't played in a few years so will need to get back into it, and a bit of training for a few months would be a great start.

What is the general standard like in Germany then? I know it is still a relatively growing sport, but also noticed that they showed loads of games from the world cup on tv (with the commentators explaining the rules as the game was played!) but don't really know how high the standards are.

Germany currently play in ENC div 2a,the winners of this group will be promoted to div 1.Germany lost yesterday to belgium and will be struggling to win the group now.They will have to win the remaining 3 games and hope other results go in their favour
